Tag of the day: Althouse is like Nixon

When the Watergate plumbers committed their "third rate burglary" it was a blip on the radar scene of the political world. A few low level minions of the President decided they knew what they needed to do to protect the President. This lead to his resignation. Because you see it is usually not the crime that is the problem but the cover-up.

I think what happened was that the EBL had given her man the keys to the kingdom. He has the password and the ability to delete at his whim. A contrempts had developed between several commenter's. I was the worst offender. I am very sorry it happened. I was totally wrong in the way I attacked Allie and have since apologized and she has graciously accepted. My only excuse was that the subject of people falsely claiming that they were veterans is something that is very important to me as I have direct personal experience of someone doing that with disastrous results. In any event we managed to act like adults and find it in our hearts to forgive each other. But forgiveness and generosity are just two of the many things in short supply at Meadhouse.

In short order, Meade deleted a whole string of comments. His wife stood up for him and took the rap even though he had said he had deleted the comments. Now Meade is a smart guy who is underemployed. It is winter so there is no yard stuff to do and all of the coeds with no bras are not out protesting so there is no one to videotape protesting at the Capitol. You can only make so many pancakes and Hobbit feet really only need to be shaved once a week. So he needs something to do and his wife decided to let him help around the blog. Those of us who are house husbands understand how that works. You help around the house but you know you will never do it right. The wife will always tell you how to do it and boss you around. So you take you shots when you can. And at the people who bugged you and spin it the way that will get the wife on board.

The EBL has to be careful in her blogging. She has a position and a reputation that she has to maintain. She is not free to attack and berate people like me or ndspinelli. She can't bust balls the way we can so I can see that she could get fustrated. She is often attacked and people make trouble for her because of that position so that people who don't like what she has to say want to silence her. The way Meadehouse wants to silence those who say things they don't want to hear. It is of course their blog and they have the perfect right to do that. But they have to stop talking about free speech because it is becoming a sad joke to those of us lucid enough to tell the forest from the trees.

What originally attracted me to that blog was the freewheeling discussions and creative atmosphere where commenter's fed off of each others enthusiasm. Ruth Anne's puns. Sippican's essays. The ghostly musing of Sir Archy. The boyish legal enthusiasm of Simon. The futile flirting of Mortimer Brenzy. The savage erudition of Cyrus Pinkerton. The crusty liberalism of hdhouse. The vinegary hard earned wisdom of Sixty Grit and AllenS. And so many more. Especially the good natured fellowship of Meade. But all those people and all of those things are gone now. Now the operative word is that they have to squash the viewpoints they don't like. So innocuous posts will be deleted because of who is posting them. Some words and people are too dangerous to their self-regard. An enemies list seems to have developed. Just like Nixon. The idea that creativity and a different voice will be not only allowed but celebrated is gone. Now the sycophantic lickspittles will be valued. Not the independent thinker or the strong contentious voices. They must be deleted so that they will not infect the rest of the new developing Borg collective.

AJ Lynch said we are like the bums he threw out of his bar who talk about how much they hate the bar but want to come back in. I don't think we hate that bar. We just like the way it used to be. But they have a new bartender. The owner is too lazy or distracted and gave power over to a bartender who is deep sixing everyone and everything that pisses him off. He was probably seething over things people said or did and now is his opportunity to run thing his way. Just the way Haldeman and Ehrlichman did. How did that work out?

When such intelligent voices as RogerJ and Dust Bunny Queen and even the irrepressible Titus say it is time to give it up and get over it they sort of have a point. They have sowed the seeds of their own destruction. It won't happen in a day and some people will still think that place is a good place to be. But before you know a disgruntled and disgraced paranoid professor will be traversing the sands of Lake Mendota in her wing tipped shoes muttering to herself about who stole her strawberries. I can see it as clear as day.

Richard Nixon has some great advice for us. He famously said: Always remember: others may hate you. But those who hate you don't win unless you hate them. And then you destroy yourself.

As RogerJ has said let us indulge in the spirit of the season and forget about our differences. They will still be there after the new year. Let us have fun and enjoy the holiday season. We can talk about a lot of other stuff that is frankly more fun. That place and those people are the past. Let us go into the future and have some yuks. We can just let it go and talk about other stuff. Life is too short.

Merry Christmas to all you knuckleheads.

  1. I think she is more like Kim Jong Il. She has a personality cult and her worshippers who will defend her beyond all reason.

Nixon, on the other hand, was a Duke Law grad.

  6. There are people in your life who've come and gone. They let you down. You know they hurt your pride. You better put it all behind you baby, 'cause life goes on. If you keep carryin' that anger it will eat you up inside, baby.

I've been tryin' to get down to the heart of the matter, but my will gets weak and my thoughts seem to scatter, but I think it's about...forgiveness...forgiveness...

  7. My uncle and aunt were farmers. They eked out a living on 120 acres of lousy soil. I spent time on their farm when I was in grade school. Hard, hard work. Work interrupted only by meals and exhaustion.

I'd ask "Uncle Joe, wouldn't it be easier if you worked in a factory?" I'd get the same answer every time: "Son, hoe your own row."

I didn't know what it meant back then. I learned later on, when I became an adult who thought my unsolicited advice was priceless.

    Hoe your own row.

  9. Hoe your own row.

I've tried strewing seeds here and elsewhere and with a bit more of Nature's fecund blessings, and Troopers light, hopefully there will be a bountiful harvest to hoe one day. But such endeavors take time and nurture.

It doesn't help that some willfully trample seedling thoughts; some overfertilize with fear and loavings; some just keep going all Jethro Tull 24/7.

  12. You're sweet, chickelit!

It's just very hard this time of year for me to ignore the Man who was and is the epitome of forgiveness. And if I say something that inspires hope, I truly do believe it's from Him, not me.

I am, IRL, pretty bad to the bone. Which is why I have an awfully keen interest in grace and mercy. ;-)

  17. Rose Mary Woods once said, "Blank you...blank you all. And remember that the blank always blanks at the end of the blankety blank." It was good advice.

I have learned that the worst advice you can give is unsolicited.

  19. Trooper: thanks for a great essay. With respect to the season, my lady and I attended the Episcopal Cburch of the Holy Communion for their lessons and carols service.. Genuinely moving--simple reading of scripture followed by heavenly music. And as a bit of a conservative myself, I do love the pomp and ceremony of a religious service when done by the appropriate church. there is something awe inspiring when the clergy and the cross bearer and the candle bearers come down the aisle.

The service started with a brass overture. The processional was "Once in Royal David's City" in which the congregation joined in on the third and forth verses; and of course Handel's soaring music set to to the book of Isaiah, chapter 40. Every Valley, For Unto Us is Born, and Go tell good tidings to zion.

I left the service with an uplifted heart--And thank god I am still alive to enjoy such wonder.

  24. This afternoon a friend who lives up the road stopped by and said that there were 3 horses loose, and they were in front of my place. So, AllenS had to do cowboy stuff. The horses are now home and safe. A mans' job is never done. Always a pleasure to leave the internets for a trip through the real world.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I love horses. (Be nice, AllenS) :)

  26. AllenS--remind me to tell you the story of when a small herd of buffalos got out--that was a major nutroll.

  27. Darcy, they stopped at my place because they saw my horse, Mary. They were doing introductions over my fence. One had a halter on, and that's the one I went and grabbed. No horses were hurt in this commercial. A good mans' compassion is never fulfilled.

  28. Re the Hitler movie, it's called 'Downfall'. I don't know if I can link directly to it, but if you have netflix streaming you can pull it up.

  29. Chick, I'm mostly English, but from the midwest.

  30. AllenS, At our former stomping grounds you would literally be forbidden to mention the name of the horse you loved.

Great summary Trooper. I called her Nixon[for saying she was justified in her actions] and Queeg for of course, the paranoia.

Here's my problem and it's probably indigeneous to me. I worked for and against pompous asshole attorneys like her for decades. I let a lot of shit roll off my back. But on some stuff I will not give one fucking inch. lying about "free speech" is one of those things. Trooper, you said to me a couple weeks ago it's a losing proposition fighting the bitch. I conceded you are probably correct. But, I was taught to keep fighting. That has served me well professionally and personally. The Man of LaMancha was one of the few musicals I liked[I'm not Titus you know!]. I have fought quixotic battles and lost. I have not regretted any of the losses. I respect your "let it go" philosophies very much and hope to get there. But I still got some pis and vinegar in me.

I have to take you guys take on Meade, he's been an asshole to me. And, I make up my mind on how someone treats me. It works the other way as well. I've had people say..the guys a douchbag. But, I liked him and that's all that mattered.

  32. I know that's weird right. Why would they keep deleting a horse who was posting on the internet. You would think they would publize that.

It could be like Mr. Ed or something.

They never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.

  33. Nd I believe in freedom. Freedom of expression. Freedom of speech. Freedom to do what you want to do. don't think I should control other people and what they want to do.

It is a losing game to try to get them to be decent honorable and honest. Always remember that she is a lawyer. And a elitist professor. She just pretends to actually like the conservative fanboys who flock to her site. When she shows her true colors they always revolt. It has happened many times in many threads. So then she does what Obama and many others do when they want to be popular. They pretend to be something else than what they really are.

You should do what you want. But I want to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

  43. About 15 years ago I heard an ad for cheap plane tickets to London, so I called my boss and told him I was going to take a long weekend. While in Blighty I went to the British Museum, and in the book section they have the autograph version of Handel's Messiah, and it is opened up to the section "Unto us, a Child is given" - that part never fails to send chills down my spine. What a remarkable piece of music that is, and to see it in the composer's own hand was, for me, simply amazing.

Also, while I was there, I touched the Rosetta stone, just because I could. Yeah, I was a bad museum visitor that day...

    Very cool, indeed, Allen :-)

I'm stuck in the relentless suburbs, so it's nice to see how things are further out. Keep those pictures coming!

It wasn't that long ago that people kept horses around here. Know a guy who occasionally rode his horse to the local high school, and he's younger than I am.

The population of Massachusetts hasn't increased much since 1940, but it's mini-mansions and townhouses everywhere these days, instead of the little farms and houses with barns you'd have seen in 1940.

Low-density 'burbs with farms and paddocks just don't generate enough revenue to support an adequate tax base for government to solve all the problems caused by mini-mansions and lots of townhouses.

  61. Thank you all. I do tear up and as I read all these comments of support and caring. I want to say thanks so much for them. And thanks to our leader for creating an atmosphere that not only truly respects and appreciates his commenters, but is secure enough to allow them to bond w/o feeling threatened.

Insecure people sometimes manifest that insecurity w/ self absorbing traits. People who truly know who they are don't feel compelled to control and are heartened to see others around them form bonds.

In my heavy drinking youth, I would stumble into places I should not have, including but not limited to titty bars, biker bars, and even a gay bar before we even called it "gay." NTTAWWT. The gay bar was in Manhattan in my high school bonzai runs into the City. Now, why did I feel compelled to explain the gay bar? That's a topic for another day! Well, I stumbled into this bar completely sober. And, I thank the Good Lord I did.

“J” is mostly gone, too…Cedarford abides…I like here, just read your Uncle Herman posts, mostly…they are two different places.

I see Meadehouse having trouble, too…there’s always a tension between free-wheeling and “order/readability”…plus Meadhouse has a reputation and Amazon.com money to maintain…if it gets around that Meadehouse is full of crazy, racist, sexist bigots it hurts the reputation and mayhap not as many buy thru Amazon….

    ReplyDelete
  67. Meadehouse doesn't have nearly as many pictures of pandas having sex. (Don't they know any other position? No wonder they get bored.)

    ReplyDelete
  68. That kind of stuff never bothered them before Joe. Titus was always free to be himself and guys like Cedarford and others published some pretty rought stuff. This comment moderation is new and improved. I think it is simply because Meade something to do but that's just my idea. I don't really care.

They have talked a lot about how I make people play by my rules. They seem to have a lot more rules than I do. People always love to accuse you of the bad behavior that is their worst fault.

Sort of like Nixon. You know. Althouse is like Nixon.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I actually have no problem with any blogger figuring out a way to monetize their blog. So I welcome that and Amazon is a good (relatively painless way to do it). Even if the expenses are non-existant (because Google is paying for them so they can funnel ads from its search engines), so what? It is time consuming. What I mock is using that as some sort of measure of love.

I am not that sort of cow.

What is sad is you can have a policy of deleting (or openly mocking) racists (and I would have only deleted a certain one consonant commentator who is truely pretty vile), while being completely pro free speech. Oh well, a blog is more akin to a store. The more customers who come the better. You have friends and a forum for ideas. It is a good thing. But if you are going to get into battles with your customers and make the place un-fun, how is that a good thing?

Oh well, I hope my twin does well. I do not need vindication. I have my little pasture and friends who stop by and visit.

    Moo.

    What drama?

There's a lot of whining about J. Memories of Jeremy, Dave, and others come to mind. Most people don't read J. That's why most people don't even know what he says.

There's a lot of "I can't believe you deleted that!" about throwaway comments. I've had throwaway stuff deleted before. Didn't occur to me to care because it was throwaway stuff. And if I had cared, I wouldn't have tried to pretend that there was now some kind of comment jihad going on between myself and Althouse. If I'd disagreed, I would have considered a simple misstep by Althouse, said so publicly, and left it at that. None of this, "You must meet my standard of perfection, or I'm going to hate you and your blog!" Or, "If I don't get my way, I am going to post dozens of comments bitching about it for days and days."

Anything substantive deleted? Anything any commenter was really proud of writing that's been called clutter? No. If that happened, it would be mockable. But this blog isn't one where you get deleted because you post something especially witty or intelligent that the blogger doesn't agree with.

The blogger here is saying, "The throwaway back and forth is driving away some of my best customers, so I've decided not to allow that anymore. It's a blog, not a chat room." Big deal. There are other places for chatting.

I don't see drama. I see a few people being dramatic, but that's about it.

    12/21/11 12:32 PM

Okay. Fair enough. From her view point that is probably true. But those people who she deems are engaging in drama have a different point. It does not mean she is wrong, from her point of view. But then we get this from the blogger-moderator-consort also known as caplight45:

    12/21/11 3:10 PM

So if I get this right, J was a jerk but you should not have read him, but you did and over reacted, so that justifies us deleting a bunch of you other commentators for being boring.

But what do I know, I am just a cow.

  75. That's a pretty good play by play.

It is old news anyway. They will never admit they are wrong they will just double down and raise the stakes in the pot.
