If you are ever going to watch an episode of the Real Housewives of New Jersey.....

Well tonight's the night.

Joe Gorga calls his sister Theresa scum. Joe Guidice (her husband) comes into the room and a brawl breaks out.

It is almost as entertaining as Lem's comment section.

If you were ever interested in the distilled essence of what the "Real Housewives" franchise is all about than this is the episode for you.

Highly recommended.

  1. I am watching Althouse vblog broadcast and the idea that this will be a substitute for comments...

    Not such a good idea.

    Weird editing and strange.

  2. Well that is 11 minutes of my life I will not get back. Fortunately I had a tall adult drink in front of me that was tasty.

  3. She looks very unwell. Sick even. Eyes, rolling, head lolling - seriously brain damaged.

    Box wine FTW!!!

  4. She definitely seems out of it. I would love to here her give specifics on what caused her to close comments. What specifically did these trolls do?

Because it is delusional There is no there there.

  5. I'm confused.

Was AA on Real Housewives of NJ tonight?

  6. Is Meade beating her? Her nose looks swollen.

    ReplyDelete
  7. So did W. C. Fields'. Nose. You know...

    ReplyDelete
  8. I'm so damn weak, I went over there and watched the vid you're talking about. Words fail me, but letters don't: ZOMG!!!

As for her nose, WC Fields must've been beaten by his mistress in the same way.

  9. If they ever open up comments again, I'm going back as Carl LaFong.

  10. Prof. Eustace McGargle is another good one.

She really looks like hell - I went back and watched another few seconds - she was stumbling over her words and wobbling back and forth, unsteady on her feet, and she has some very peculiar mannerisms. Never saw her talk before and I am appalled. She is a mess.

I might almost feel some pity for Mr. Althouse, were he not such an asshole.

  11. And those are the parts she left in!

Imagine what the many outtakes must be like.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Probably looks like the outtakes from a Foster Brooks roast - errppp...

  13. "If people were only coming for the comments, I really wasn't putting the work into all of that so that people could read other people's writing. If you're not interested in my writing, it's fine for me if you don't read by blog.

There it is. SADS for me, because other people's writing was the reason I showed up day after day, even after I stopped commenting at TOP.

Just before the comments were closed, I learned from someone there about Chesterton's Wall/Fence, which was something I'd not heard of before, but found interesting. It involved the notion of not getting rid of a fence before finding out the reason it had been erected.

  14. Something compelled me to go back to that video to see if it was really as bad as we all thought. On second view I thought, "Maybe her nose always looks that way, cuz she sunburns easily."

So I clicked on a couple of the old vlogs that show up in the panel after this one stops playing. I was stunned.

However many years ago, she looked totally different. Really, if not for the voice I'd think it was someone else. And the nose seemed much smaller.

But most striking was the total diff in personality. Early AA seemed positively nice, and genuinely surprised and a little bit pleased that her comments section occasionally took on a life of its own.

Something has clearly taken a large toll on her, or maybe she just got worse at hiding her non-niceness. At this point, what diff does it make?

I came away thinking that she ought to hop in the car and travel to a bunch of places w/ no wi-fi (if there are such places) and leave the blog behind for the rest of the summer.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I felt so uncomfortable I stopped watching the video at three different places to try and put together what I was experiencing because something about the words, tone and body language seemed out of sync and off.

I felt nonplussed during and afterwards. So much so I can't joke about what I saw or what came up for me. I do think hopping in the car and spending the rest of the summer leaving the blog behind sounds like a great idea. Something I wouldn't mind doing myself, except I don't want to leave while my day lilies are blooming and the nasturtiums I so hopefully planted this spring are bursting with color.

  16. I noticed the same things, Chip. I liked the Althouse in the older vlogs. Charming, really.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Wow. I watched a minute or two of the current VLOG at TOP and then a couple of minutes of VLOG #4 from back when.

The change in the face in general and the nose in particular was striking. I almost wonder if the new one is a put-on, if she's put on a putty nose to goof on people. But as someone mentioned, the head mannerisms were also markedly different. He body kind of fidgeted in both of them, but she kept her head upright and still in the old one, and mostly looked into the camera. In the new one she was looking around constantly, rarely looking at the camera, and her head was moving from side to side a lot.

It really is quite the difference.

  18. Will someone tell me what Meade said about Nick losing his dog? I can't find anything. Maybe I read the back and forth wrong, but I thought I'd read that he was mean about it.

    ReplyDelete
  19. By the way, Althouse as added a comment that says she got sunburned. I didn't notice her nose looking different other than being red.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Y'all. People age. And sometimes it's not pretty.

Why do you think she's all over the subtext of Hillary's campaign and the Drudge/Rush take on watching a woman age?

I still read her. It takes a lot less time on her site to accomplish that task now. We should thank her, really, except that she keeps talking about the commenters or lack thereof.

The change you might be noticing is the presence of two watchers--the camera and the man-behind-the-curtain. It's hard to focus on both at the same time.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Lem has disallowed anonymous commenters and also ended embedded comments, just BTW.

    ReplyDelete
  22. The change you might be noticing is the presence of two watchers--the camera and the man-behind-the-curtain. It's hard to focus on both at the same time.

Possibly, but she often doesn't seem to be focusing on either. Perhaps it is just distraction.

As for aging - I did consider that, and there usually comes a period where people change a lot in a few years. Maybe that's all it is, but between that, the change in the recorded mannerisms, and what certainly appears to be a change in behavior recently, it does make one wonder.

    ReplyDelete
  23. RAA - drinking to excess speeds the aging process. She loves to drink. It takes a toll.

The head lolling, half lidded eyes, the verbal stumbles and unsteadiness on her feet are evidence of the underlying neurological damage - but I'll leave it at that. If she wants to remain soused, and her spouse doesn't mind, why should I care?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Icepick and Sixty Grit:
Is it possible that she's just a flibbertijibbet?

I'm not personally familiar with the effects of ongoing/excessive drinking, though, so you may have a point.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I watched the video and Althouse does look sunburned. Remember, she previously didn't go outside much and spent much of her time at home or in coffee houses. A very sheltered and limited lifestyle. Since she has married her lifestyle is much more outdoors and active. Being a redhead with very fair skin she is likely to get sunburned in a very short time even with sunscreen.

I think she is fooling herself about writing a book. It is likely jealousy of Dr Helen Smith and Spinelli's wife's success that is making her think that it is possible. Her writing style is doesn't lend itself to writing a fiction book. I'm afraid that if she tried such a thing it would be incredibly boring and bad.

That being said, I don't think she looks well or healthy, but then again...it is just a video and I'm sure that the blog and raucous comment section has taken a toll on her mentally.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I went over there an looked at her vlog. This is the first time I've watched any of her vlogs.

My take: She's a sixty year old woman. She looks better than some of my wife's friends of that age, and not as good as some others. Genetics and exercise help slow, but cannot stop, the aging of the human body. She looks normal.

The nose thing - my take is that the nose looks the way it does because it is sunburned. Careful makeup on an unburned nose for her previous vlogs made it look different than it does in is one.

Does she always wander? Her seeming inability to make eye contact with the camera was odd, almost like she didn't believe what she was saying. Or I'm reading too much into it perhaps.

I expected her to be happier, or maybe even joyful, but that didn't come through at all. Hey, it's summer, she has a really good life, a nice home, a husband and the anticipation of a terrific retirement coming up short-term. Lots of reasons for happiness in all that, but not much happiness shown.

The whole thing is really a tempest in a teapot. A pissing contest among twenty or so blog commenters on two or three blogs in a universe of millions of commenters on thousands of blogs. Not the kind of thing that should be taken personally in the big picture, ya know?

  28. Nick comments on his dog Coco's death in the "Zimmerman not found Guilty Thread" (the one linked to under the cherub heading at TY.) The comments are no longer nested, and so the thread is out of order now, but I don't recall or see Meade saying anything nasty about nd's dog.

ND to Bagoh2o said....Yes it is. Firstly, please call me Nick, shithead, dago, etc. The timing of you generous comment was so well timed. Our 14 year old Brittany Spaniel had a stroke last night. My son and I just finished burying Coco. Your comment brought the first smile to my bride's face today.

Your mom's positive attitude will be key in her licking this cancer. That's been proven scientifically. My prayers for your mom, your family, and the docs treating her. Tell your mom thanks, and she'll be reading the sequel in the Fall. Thanks much, bagoh.

Nick--so sorry to hear about coco--I lost a dog that had to be put down. Madison Man--a commenter I always respected--sent me a wonderful note that said: someday you will find another dog; you will look in her eyes and see coco. That was a wonderful thought. And I believe it to this day.

    ndspinelli said...
Roger, Thanks. It was tough on my kids and bride. I love dogs and loved Coco. But, a 14 year old dog who lead a great life, got to run in the woods every day, went quickly. I'm a bit more philosophical, but there was emotion also.

    Aridog said...
ndspinelli and Roger J. ... damn, losing a dog, especially one of 10 years plus, is crushing, at least to me me and when I hear of it for others I dam near cry. When rhhardin faces that eventuality, it will hurt as much as losing "Ari" did for Judi and I. You see enough photos of a dog you get an idea about the owner too. We still have "Dera" and we decided to let her be top dog and only dog until that time, again. She really is special and not 1 in 100 German Shepherds is even close to her in temperament around children.

I am very sorry for anyone who loses a dog. Or a horse. People ....meh. I am weird that way. "Coco" will still be with you, just as Roger J has quoted MadisonMan saying...when you look in to the eyes of a new pup, or a sunset or sunrise, or anything you both related to...if it didn't happen that way I'd long ago have died myself.

  29. Mr. Haz is probably right.

I too was struck by the lack of enjoyment or enthusiasm for life that she showed. At first I thought it was due to standing up and speaking, but that's what she does for a living.

Anyway, she is tired and it shows. Sunburned? Who knows. I tan. Plus I am colorblind.

I don't like drunks, never have, never will, present company excepted, mind you, so I tend to focus on what I see as her inclination to over-imbibe. Speaks more to my point of view than any reality in her life.

But I will stand by my assessment of what looks like neurological impairment, cause or causes unknown.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I found the Althouse vlog comment on owning a dog odd--not in the present momemtn and close to childlike.

There was a dog in the house at the time. It shows up in the left side doorway about half way through the video, with no mention of it.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Sixty - I was thinking TIA while watching the vlog, but since I haven't seen the 'before' I can't judge the 'after'.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Is it possible that she's just a flibbertijibbet?

Possible. Or it's possible that she just isn't feeling well AT THE MOMENT.

Really, I'm not trying to diagnose anything, I'm just noting there are significant changes in her physical appearance and behavior from early VLOGS to the current one.

She was definitely fidgeting with her body in the first one. I've seen that from lots of people in office settings all the time. But like the people in the office, AA in the old VLOG kept her focus pretty clearly on the camera, Not so in the current VLOG, though I don't think it is as pronounced as some others are making out.

Anyway, it's just a thing to note. She's got health problems, or she doesn't. She's aged suddenly, or she has merely had a bad sunburn.

Personally I don't get all the personal vitriol, but then this isn't my fight. There's someone on the blogosphere with whom I have what is damned near a blood feud at this point, and most of the people privy to that don't seem to get it. Oh well, to each their own.

    ReplyDelete
  33. 'm not personally familiar with the effects of ongoing/excessive drinking, though, so you may have a point.

    I am, unfortunately.

Drunks do get 'loose', physically, and have trouble holding still. They eventually get to where they have trouble holding eye contact.

Eventually, all drunks turn mean. Someone who was a happy drunk for quite some years will eventually turn into a hateful bastard, it's just a question of how long it takes.

Note that I am not saying this is what is going on with TOP proprietor. I don't know, and I don't care. As I've written elsewhere, I think it's just normal human foibles, coupled with constant interaction with people that can't respond to non-verbal cues to cool it.

I mean, everyone is ALWAYS THERE. People don't back down. They stay in confrontation mode all the time. In real life, people would either do something to smooth over the rough patches, leave each other alone for a stretch, or just call it quits. (Or get married and spend the next several decades making each others lives a living Hell, like my parents did for each other.)

But in the blogosphere people just keep coming back day after day, post after post. That's got to be wearing, especially to the person who is the focus of the bulk of it.

I really think it is all much more explainable as just typical human foibles in a brand new format for socializing. It will take more than a few years to figure this out.

  34. Ok folks, you all owe me an adult beverage. As I started watching the vlog I picked up a couple things. First, you're correct, the editing was horrible. She usually edits fairly well so that was noteworthy. The jump cuts were distracting. Secondly, the eyes..the eyes say it all. Those eyes were quite glazed. But, here's why you all owe me a drink. About halfway through I noticed just how self involved this was. Certainly no revelation. But, I decided to start again from the beginning and count the number of, "I, me, my's." In the 11 minute clip there are 111! That is once every 6 seconds. Does anything more need to be said?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Icarus had a nasty sunburn, too.

Yes, this is what I wrote last night, but didn't publish:

    Ick R Us

The picture of The Lament for the Fallen Icarus, mentioned and linked here at TY just prior to the Meltdown, qualifies in my mind as totally appropriate if not prophetic.

Now the flapping of another cherub appearing at Lem's and TY seems a similar example of hubris and ambition gone awry.

Prior to the Meltdown, I was didn't like the way the pair of them handled the "J" incident. I found it difficult to accept their response, as it didn't sound forthcoming or credible to my ears.

Following the Meltdown, I was disappointed in Althouse's respons once again, but gave Meade a pass with the understanding that it was appropriate for him to stand alongside as partner.

Now, I'm disappointed in Meade too. His latest pot stirring over at Lem's seem inappropriate to me. Especially so since I've not yet seen him or Althouse make a good faith effort to present an honest or clear account of their actions and intentions.

Ick R Us is the picture I'm seeing them portray.

At this point, I'm disappointed in the pair.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Does anything more need to be said?

Well, the obvious thing is to wonder if AA and BHO have the same speech writer.

    ReplyDelete
  37. We need Blake to weigh in on how Jean-Luc Godard's work influenced the stylist choices made by Mrs. Greenjeans. He will see beyond the surface and be able to explain the meaning behind the camera movements or lack thereof, the jump cuts and what the dog symbolizes.

Perhaps he can even explain why Meade crawls on the floor - that was priceless, but for the life of me, I am unable to come up with a positive reason for it. It must refer to some obscure Felini film that I hope I never see.

  38. From a symbolic viewpoint, the big hand coming in from the left (twice) was another was another oddity.

    ReplyDelete
  39. That was clearly an homage to the great television auteur Soupy Sales. It revisited and restated in a modern setting all the emotion and angst that Mr. Sales was made to endure when his guest White Fang appeared on the show.

    That was easy.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Oops, the hand shows once not twice. Although I understood the reference, it was visually a big hand coming in from the left and it didn't look amusing to me , followed by...

Again all of it meant to be amusing...but oddly true.

  42. Writing a book must be incredibly difficult. Try writing a paragraph. I mean a paragraph you can stand back and look at and be completely satisfied with. And then multiply that by thousands. Thousands of paragraphs to make one book, probably short. I think I'll go lie down now.

    ReplyDelete
  43. The interaction between Althouse and Meade, who was off-camera, was actually the only part of the vlog that I liked. Her face softened and the interaction with off-cam Meade seemed warm and from Althouse, almost deferential. I liked that.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I did wonder whether this vlog was Meade's idea as a way of saying "lay off my wife, she's not well."

    ReplyDelete
  45. I'm annoyed at the recent post from Meade at Lem's asking everyone to contribute money to Lem as he has done.

    I smell manipulation.

I prefer the idea of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing and I hate the manipulation of Lem who is such a cool guy.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Back to that circle thing again.

  47. I agree with Darcy. If people wish to contribute to a blog that is their personal choice. I have already stated that I would buy some of our plumbing supplies through Lem's Amazon portal, should he have one. I would do the same here on Trooper's blog as well.

Meade is and has always come across (to me anyway) as a crass and money grubbing personality. Lem is too nice of a person and I don't like to see anyone being pushed around or used as a tool, which is how I feel that Meade is operating over at Lem's blog.

I think Lem is a great guy and if you want to give him money then you should do so but if you really have some extra cash laying around why not send it to Palladian who could really use it.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I don't know if that is manipulative but that strikes me as a valid point. I can't post it because I will be attacked for attacking Meade or something but that is how I feel.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I smell manipulation.

That's what I refer to as "ick". As if the niceness, which may in part be genuine, is also part of something deeper involving a hidden agenda. For me, those interaction's at Lem's are as unsettling to watch unfold as the video.

Credit for accuracy of the "man behind the curtain" comment goes to Ruth Anne, and I join in agreeing with the "on the money" rejoinder.

  55. I contributed a couple of times to a commenter who had hard times until it got to be too much and I felt that I was contributing to the problem instead of the solution.

  59. Geez....that Meade is such an asshole. Doesn't he have something to do. Maybe we should all email Althouse a zillion questions or comments, so that Meade will have to take care of HIS business.

I would say I feel kind of sorry for Lem but he is a big boy and he will have to take his lumps.

  61. It is funny how people always accuse you of what they are guilty of being. Manipulative and jealous are what they are always calling me.

Well I say they are fat. So there!

    ReplyDelete
  62. First, I'm not sure how I could contribute to Palladian if I wanted to. I guess by purchasing something?

Second, there are lots of people I know that need money, including me. Times are tough. And Palladian is actually the second commenter I know from Althouse that is homeless, the other being Ron. So there are all kinds of charitable targets out there. Just sayin'.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Also, Lem's a big boy, so why assume he's being manipulated? I really think some of you are just reading too much into everything.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I can't post it because I will be attacked for attacking Meade or something but that is how I feel.

I see it as Go Fish, with another bucket of chum dumped in the pool. I took his gesture of generosity to be another move in the ongoing game being played out over there, coming in on the heels of the ado over El Pollo's much appreciated help. Lem appears to hold Althouse and Meade in high esteem, and I believe Meade to be aware of that. Anyone who knows Trooper York is also aware that generosity is one of his strong suites, along with his willingness to wade in the water, act the bonehead and bop hippos. So it seems a direct poke to me, more provocation and pissing on the post to see who will sniff and bark.

The female who's been double teaming with him has been doing a good job of presenting the Alt-ernate view.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Well that is sort of the point Ice.

Why would you contribute to Althouse or Lem for that matter when other people need the money a lot more?

Everybody needs money. Times are tough. Why would you give it to Althouse?

Meade's manipulation is easy to see. He is pumping up donating to Lem because he wants people to donate to Althouse. I don't think that is reading too much into it. But that's just me.

  71. That is what rankles a lot of people.

I know Michael Haz linked to the salary of professors at Wisconsin. I don't see why they think people should pay them. It is obvious that Meade is pushing this big time. It is basically kind of sleazy. Kind of a con man move. Don't you think? Or am I totally off base?

Haven't sen the fat post. I'm rapidly losing interest in TOP. The comments weren't all of it, but they were a major part of it. And there are other places to do that, especially now.

And as a fat person, all I can say is that fat people are jolly, kind and wise.

  81. We live in interesting times.

That's one way to put it.

  82. The unemployment situation in this country could turn me back into a liberal.

Why? The liberals want to help the problem of too many workers and wages that are too low by importing tens of millions more workers to keep UE high and wages low.

    Bastards all.

  84. It is time to bring out the Oompa Loompa's and not just because she looked like one in her video.

    Wait is that too mean?

Because Darrell Issa (my rep) is a major supporter/sponsor of the house bill: link

Dems will get wind of division in the ranks.

  86. Is Meade still telling everybody else at Lem's that they're obsessed w/ the EBL?

It seems like reading Lem's comments is like walking thru a park where a homeless lunatic follows you around yelling about the Masons.

I mean Jackie and Perry, of course.

  87. @Icepick: But you're right in that industry has both parties in their pocket.

  88. @Icepick: Plus I read a pretty well researched article in this week's Chemical & Engineering News which casts doubt on the wisdom of such legislation.

  89. @Pollo, did that article discuss the Factor Price Equalization Theorem or cite the key papers by Balassa and Samuelson?

  90. I shouldn't have posted what I did over there, but it sickened me. I'd be happy to be wrong about the whole thing.

Yes, to the Oompa Loompas. What did they ever do to you?

  92. You oughta be posting here more and there less, Darce.

  93. My insurance agent tried to get me to join the masons. I said I would, but only if they went back to calling themselves the Knights Templar.

I just got back from the doctor's office. I am fat, too. I now weigh 193 pounds, fully dressed, which doesn't seem too bad until you realize I am only 5'1".

Doc said I was taller when I lie down.

Jackie Mason - now there's a funny guy. Doesn't seem to get much work these days, but what are you going to do, eh?

Darce, if you don't like what you wrote, delete the comment. The web is a transitory thing.

  94. Darcy, I thought you were spot on actually.

If Lem gets some donation love to get started, good for him. Meade is just being a jerk, but frankly he and Althouse are absolutely in a panic and do not know what to do. Plus Ann will not give Meade back his manhood and he is feeling vulnerable.

As for supporting Lem, I guess it is like an Amish Barn Raising. Who is bring the potato salad? Lem will probably make scrod for the Red Sox and beans for Boston.

Perry Mason's Favorite Knock-Knock Jokes, by Jackie Mason.

  96. Darcy I think you might want to delete it. You don't want to engage Meade. You are too gentle a soul.

    Leave it to us roughnecks.

  97. I've got a knock knock joke.

    Start it.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Troop, I think Darcy's tough as nails, cuz she always speaks the truth as she sees it.

She could probably inflict more damage on Meade than anyone else at Lem's.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Don't you have to start it, 60?

    ReplyDelete
  100. E. P. - did Meade really write that? He is sicker than I thought.

I am going to guess Rev. Lovejoy as the voice.

  101. Darcy, I thought what you said over there came through clear and clean. It prompted affirmation as well as push back, and that's part of the process that needs to happen for in order for new community to form. Whatever you do with it is up to you, but I didn't hear it as out of order.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Saw right through that one, Chip S. Dang...

The point of that joke is, and it does have one, is the other person says "Knock knock" and the instigator says "Who's there?", or in some cultures "Whose there?" and the humor ensues when the person is unable to answer, as it was not their joke to start with.

Jackie Mason has a million of 'em.

    Henny Youngman, too.

    How's your wife?

    Compared to what?

  103. @Pollo, did that article discuss the Factor Price Equalization Theorem or cite the key papers by Balassa and Samuelson?

No sir, it did not. It's a magazine for voting members, few of whom are economists. The article may be behind a pay wall.

  105. I hear you MamaM but Meade fights dirty and it looks like the leash is off. I can take care of my self but I worry about others.

But Darcy can make up her own mind of course.

    ReplyDelete
  106. ...and it looks like the leash is off

Amen to that. It didn't take long for the spirit of generosity to take flight.

It had to be done. Good show.

I meant to do it earlier but got sidetracked. Now to go do some housework so the missus doesn't beat me when she gets home.

Uh, I mean in the bad way....

  110. And it was a damned fine suggestion, Trooper. I wish I had thought of it myself.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Thank you - all of you. Especially the concern, Trooper. I was touched by that.

I'm letting it stand and ignoring Meade.

Also - who the fuck is fiona?

Oop. I guess I am a little riled.

  112. I thought Fiona was Shrek's bitch?

You know.....the evil blogger lady is starting to look like Shrek based on vblog....do ya think?

Nah that would be too easy.
