I'd guess they were places where a character shows up. Maybe used by an actor for research.
It'd have to be someone in all of the books, so maybe Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage).
Or it could be action scenes or SFX things but I'd think that'd be less useful, since the script needn't follow the books closely and "background" isn't much useful to a technical guy.
