The Dubious Case of the Disappearing Douche Bag

My dear Holmes,

It is your most humble petitioner, Inspector Lestrade. It has been some time since I have stopped requesting you assistance in the troubling matter of the disappearance of Lord Douchebag which you might not recall as it happened several years ago. As I had previously noted in one of  my prior missives, I or my agents had at one time or another have attended many of the salons of the noted conversationalist and dilettante Lady Chatterley where Lord Douchebag was a frequent and much valued guest. In fact it has been told to me that the Lady in question has often referred to him as wonderful. It appears that some not so wonderful things have commenced at this soirée of insalubrious sycophants.

As I had previously intimated Inspector Gregson reports that the salon of Lady Chatterley has utterly changed character in the recent months. There is an entirely new group of lickspittles and toadies as well as several women of dubious character. One  brazen harpy in particular has proven to be a thorn in the side of most of the other more genteel denizens of this group of lonely and dim conversationalists. She constantly  turns the conversation back to herself and her concerns while trying to start contretemps  and controversies that would have various groups bicker and joust while she sits back with a Cheshire grim gloating on her trouble-making skull like visage. She continually displays her buttocks both literally and metaphorically. Although her skeletal countenance would serve to gag one of the rotund epicurean's maggots she deems it the object of desire of all as though she was a red bottomed baboon in the jungles of Uganda. Every topic must refer back to this bony bon vivant  as she has an insatiable appetite for attention and an unerring path to victim-hood and drama. It seems that she has assumed the role of Douchebag without the benefit of the sobriquet.

It is past understanding why Lady Chatterley does not protest thus usurpation as this is her own recognized modus operandi and you cannot have two actors performing the same role. Since she is presumed to be the locus of all drama in her demented salon it is past understanding why this rival attention seeking succubus is tolerated. Perhaps the Dear Lady's attention has been draw to other quarters or she may finally have fallen into the dementia which lurks so close to the surface in all of her attempts at social intercourse.

It now seems that this shrill and demented harpy has taken over the salon along with a rotund fancier of rotted maggot infested meat found in the thoroughfare and other like-minded miscreants whose existence walking in the light of day is a mystery to all and sundry. I am quite worried about poor Gregson as this salon has evolved into a Darwinian morass that would shock the most hardened natural scientist. I can only hope his fragile psyche can endure the damage until we root out this noxious coven of caterwauling menaces to our civil society.

With your permission I will endeavor to keep you informed. Your keen insights into this demented behavior would be most appreciated. In return if the Yard can be of help in your current case of the Hottentot who has disappeared in the disguise of an empty chair I will of course be at your service.

I hope all is well with you and Doctor Watson. Please inform Doctor Watson that his recent habit of dressing like an Oriental woman while accompanying you on cases has come to our attention and we have managed to head off the inquires of the press. I would suggest he would limit such activities to privacy of your rooms.

In any event give him my regards.

I remain as always,
Your obedient servant,
Inspector G. Lestrade

  5. At the Justin Timberlake Jessica Biel wedding one of the gifts was a video of Los Angeles homeless congratulating the newlyweds. And it went over very well. Hideously mockingly funny. Smashingly funny donchyaknow.

Anyway, in such a world it's not the worst thing in the world for us dim and lonely conversationalists to make our occasional escape into the admittedly grotesque but relatively harmless lair of She Who Must Be Obeyed.

  6. That should of course be the Jessica Biel Justin Timberlake wedding. There, I feel so much better now.

  7. A good place to insert a quote found last night in an author's note by Ivan Doig:

This work of fiction takes its cues from something once said by Peter Brook, who as a stage director has sought to imbue storytelling, as he phrased it to an interviewer, with "the closeness of reality and the distance of myth, because if there is not distance you aren't amazed, and if there is not closeness you aren't moved."

Whilst this rendition of the Dubious Case may verge more toward amazing than moving, closeness and distance are both in evidence.

  31. Mrs. Haz and I spent part of this lovely late autumn day walking around in downtown Chicago. Nearly everyone was dressed as hipsters for Halloween; the rest were dressed as Japanese tourists.

Great steaks at Smith and Wollensky at a table overlooking the Chicago River.

We wanted to look at a new condo in the Trump Tower. We were under-dressed by several thousand dollars, so were politely told that they were all sold out, or something.

Although this thing is moving so slow it might stall out...well, no, it won't stall out but the projected track has it not reaching me here in mid-state New York until like late Tuesday night. Concerning Haz' comment that he was politely turned away by a real estate agent or office from viewing an upscale apartment because of being several thousand dollars underdressed: given that the richest of the rich walk around nowadays in sweatshirts and jeans or even sweat pants I'd say the agent was making a potentially costly mistake. Aside from the rottenness of acting the snob.

I had a meal at Ditka's quite a while back, and even had a moment to talk football with Ditka hisself. It was all good. More recently, his place has become a magnet for tourists, and is usually too busy for drop-in dining.

More often than not, when I'm in Chicago I look for a mom and pop place in an ethnic neighborhood, or hit one of Rick Bayless' places.

  55. We just got back from spending yesterday in the 'big city' so we could stay overnight, bought a few things so that it was a business trip. The weather was absolutely fabulously glorious. Mid 80's clear skies and the autumn colors were just popping. We had to actually turn on the AC in the car on the way back up the mountain today. Considering that last Monday it was snowing and about 16 degrees at night, it was beautiful and weird at the same time.

I was thinking of all you guys who are back in the East and in the path of the storm on the way back home. Let's hope that the Frankenstorm will turn out to be just another hyped up nothing by the MSM.

  59. Troop -

Are you hunkering down, or finding a friend's place for the next couple days?

Is your place on the lee side of the storm surge? What is your elevation in terms of MLLW (mean lower low water)?

Oh never mind. Your store is about 57 feet above sea level, which should give you 46 feet of safety. Vertically.

So don't worry (unless the alligators come up from the sewer).

    ReplyDelete
  60. @EBL - we would not.

Weather has turned cold and windy here, and the storm has moved north of NC. I can only imagine how miserable it is closer to the action.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Like Sixty, I was cutting a maple today. Not as big around as his. We planted it about 20 years ago, but it's time to lose it. I've been planning on getting to it the past couple of weeks, but haven't until today. I only took the limbs that lean toward the house. With forecasts of 60 mph gusts staring tomorrow, I didn't want anything to come down unplanned. Later this week, I'll take down what's left still.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I wish mamam was here so I could hold on to her tits for safety. Mamam we are going down, catch me.

    WILSON!! WIIILLLLLLLSOOOOONNNN!!

Sorry, No Tits for Titus. MamaM doesn't do hurricanes. The last Nor'easter she weathered and survived out East was the storm of '77 and it was a doozy. Houses along the Boston Harbor/Shoreline were encased in ice.

Tonight's NWS statement is strongly worded. Which means I'll be holding Titus and TY and LeeLee and ricpic and the two Southern Gents in heart and mind, which is almost as good as tits.

    ReplyDelete
  68. We have gotten all the Sandy-related rain we are going to get here, but the wind is going to be bad. The maple that I have been working on has a twin - equally large, also badly pruned, but not showing the kind of rot the other has.

The problem with that one is that it still has all of its leaves on it - that creates a large sail area for the wind to push on, so I might saw some of the limbs near the house.

Back in hurricane Fran a maple tree fell on my house. Only lost two trees in that storm, unlike the ice storm of 2002 which brought down 35 trees in my yard.

What are you going to do - the wind is going to blow, trees will stand or fall and volley balls will bob out of reach. Such is the way of life.

    ReplyDelete
  69. How is everyone doing? Trooper? Tim? Sixty? Titus?

    ReplyDelete
  70. It is windy here, but that's all. I assume Troop is underwater. He picked a bad week to go to Seatuck.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I forgot about TT sharing Boston's weather with Titus.

I'm assuming (hoping) TY is home battening down his hatches, charging his phone, locating matches and stocking up on provender

The affects of this storm are far reaching. We are not in harm's way, but the wind here in MI, 750 miles from the East Coast and 50 miles from Lake Michigan, started blowing and gusting this afternoon and is supposed to continue through Tuesday. The birds are going nuts, feeding like a winter storm is on the way. All minor compared the pounding those closer are receiving, but a tangible affirmation of the much larger reality: a big assed storm with a long arm.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Trooper,

Your family needs to know you are OK. Most of the webcams are out, but the traffic cam on the corner of Atlantic Ave and Berum Street is still working.

So walk up (over?) there and stand next to the white building. Be sure to wear that red shirt you always seem to have on. I don't see any other pedestrians in the picture. Jump up and down and give the "OK" sign for at least 30 seconds. If you are not OK, make a sign or placard.

Alternative is the camera at the "BQE at Hamilton Ave B-G Ramp" whatever the hell that is.

Return to safe place with internet access and confirm.

    ReplyDelete
  73. The power went out in San Diego last year for several hours right before rush hour. The worst part was driving--not on the freeways--but on the secondary streets directed by lights. Total chaos.

Also, while cell phones worked for a while, the cell towers were soon jammed with people trying to get info via iphones, etc. The only thing that still worked were land lines.

  77. Hi, guys. I'm in Iowa, but my husband is in our house in Delaware. Of course, I have many, many friends, family etc. in the affected areas up and down the East Coast. (Even my dad and his wife evacuated to N.C. because their home was located at the epicenter of where all those blizzards are hitting in West Virgina.) For this reason, I have been closely monitoring the situation and have been and am in touch with many folks out there.

Haz, regarding Tim, we are Facebook friends (as you can imagine, I've been on Facebook off and on all day and continuously now). He just recently reported 61 mph gusts of wind in his area already. His primary concern at present is that he has trees that were slated to be taken down, but now may be at risk. Otherwise, he seems to be OK.

I was checking out Twitter earlier today (the account I use just as a newsfeed, as you know, chick), but I didn't check out other people's public lists, which I occasionally do just to see how folks are doing. I'll have to do that while my son taking his piano lesson.

  85. I don't know much of anything about NY City. Is the area where Trooper is higher than sea level? Much chance of flooding? I hope not.

Here is how we prepare for power outages, since we have them a lot.

Keep handy some kerosene lanterns, candles and stick matches.

Use those light sticks to tag your door knobs and locations of lanterns, flash lights etc in the dark so your don't stumble down the stairs trying to find things. Plus they are festive and go well with the scotch.

Have a non electric phone. We have a wall mounted trimline from the 1970's in a back bathroom. They work even without the power.

Use a BIG battery back up for your computer and as an axillary for a radio. That way if the power goes out, you have time to shut down your computer. We can run for an hour or two without power.

Keep several 18 volt hand lights with back up charged batteries. De Walt is pretty good. Also an 18 volt radio, also DeWalt.

Fortunately we have natural gas heat and cooking, but just in case, we keep a butane camp stove so we can cook some soup or tea or make coffee. Perk style coffee pot and a hand grinder for beans.

    Stay safe everyone!!!

    ReplyDelete
  86. ARe we supposed to look up "mopping the floor" in the Urban Dictionary or just draw our own conclusions here?

    Heh.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I do have a little bit of gas this evening.

Judicious release of the gas between winds gusts may be in order to prevent further damage due to Butterfly Effect.

The name of the effect, coined by Edward Lorenz, is derived from the theoretical example of a hurricane's formation being contingent on whether or not a distant butterfly had flapped its wings several weeks before.

  88. Hi all from very expensive and fab Cambridge.

The wind and rain are amazing. The rare clumber has the shits which makes Frankenstorm even more complicated, yet easier. He can pinch water and I don't even have to clean it up-it immediately gets wiped away by wind and rain, but I do pretend I am picking it up...for the neighbors.

My fabulous windows, which are floor to ceiling throughout the entire very exclusive loft building are shaking. Did I mention I am in the Penthouse Unit? So I am seeing tons of carnage.

  93. The wind and rain are fucking vicious. I have lived here for 20 years, with 4 at Harvard, and I have never experienced anything this bad.

We don't deserve this. This should be happening in the south. We have a full set of teeth and fabulous degrees and six figure incomes. We work in labs and offices, academia, and venture capital firms, not on some "rig" or oil conglomerate. This is so unfair.

What fucking gay thing happened recently to cause this? It can't be fags marrying-we have been married forever here.

I think it may be the coming of Elizabeth Warren.

I also hope Tagg is doing ok in The Back Bay.

  95. All of NYC is above sea level, but some of it not by much. The subways are a problem. There are tunnels everywhere - if they start filling with water that will create bigger problems.

Unlike New Orleans NYC has not subsided over the centuries. The Hudson, as big as it is, is no Mississippi.

I was reading that the storm surge could come up over the sea wall at the Battery at the southern tip of Manhattan - I guess we'll see if it does.

    Stay safe and away from the window. We don't want your fabulous self to be scarred or injured. {seriously}

Neo-Neocon has a theory. Obama has called down the Nemisis

In Greek mythology, Nemesis (Greek, Νέμεσις), also called Rhamnousia/Rhamnusia (“the goddess of Rhamnous”) at her sanctuary at Rhamnous, north of Marathon, was the spirit of divine retribution against those who succumb to hubris (arrogance before the gods). The Greeks personified vengeful fate as a remorseless goddess: the goddess of revenge. The name Nemesis is related to the Greek word νέμειν [némein], meaning “to give what is due”.

The color, music, dance, characters, yes I know totally gay but it was amazing.

And there is no place like home.

    tits.

  102. The Cowardly Lion referred to himself as a sissy. He was bullied in 1939.

  104. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, and watched childish movies like "The Wizard Of Oz." When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me.

    tits.

  106. I'm surprised that Will Geer didn't play the Cowardly Lion.

  107. Well, the Tin Man was a Woodman, repaired by "Winkie Tinsmiths" but his funnel was firmly situated on his head.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Fuckin' twink used an ax - feh - real woodsmen use a Stihl.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Victoria tweeted a very Trooper-esque joke: link

    ReplyDelete
  110. Hah! Twas but a tin veneer over Stihl!

    ReplyDelete
  111. Just heard from my brother - they are getting flooding in central Maryland - snow to the west of where he is located.

My son sent me a picture of my granddaughter in a wooden bowl I made for him - if they have to evacuate his place in NJ she can float. I hope he is just kidding.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Of all the characters in Wizard Tin Man was definitely gayest. Even gayer than Dorothy, who was such a dyke.

He walked like a major fag and he could barely lift that ax.

    Huge queen.

Glenda was a lipstick lesbian, the wicked witch of the west huge diesel, flying monkees were major leather queens, the wizard was a huge daddy and the muncheons were total twinks.

    tits.

    ReplyDelete
  113. My husband is in NYC tonight doing fine.

Would it be too gay to ask where the hub holed up in NY for the night? How do you know he's "fine"? Is the power still on and humming at his chosen port in this storm?

    ReplyDelete
  114. @CL - Snooki is in no danger of sinking.

    ReplyDelete
  115. He is at the four seasons Mamam and there is power, we just spoke.

The four seasons is definitely not gay. We actually don't do anything gay, really, abs nothing.

    How is The Situation doing?

I really want a a large tit to hold onto for safety.

The wind and rain is fucking evil right now.

    tits.

  116. I'm listening the the NYFD dispatcher online. Holy crap, what a disaster. Frighteningly horrible, Smoke in subways, people trapped, PD officers trapped in floating squad cars, out of control fires.

Also heard of big flooding in much of Brooklyn. Praying ro Jim and Lisa. This is horrible. It will take months for this mess to be repaired.

  117. Cory Booker makes me horny.

I bet he has gone both ways.

I would love to see his shaved head blowing me. I would not care to see Murdouck or Akin blowing me though, they are very unattractive.

    tits.

  118. This is horrible. It will take months for this mess to be repaired.

Does this mean the election will be postponed until next year?

    ReplyDelete
  119. Depends upon whether or not that popular fellow Marshall Law shows up, I reckon.

  120. No postponement of elections is included in the founding documents.

I am very bipartisan when it comes to fucking.

You know that Peoria rep has sucked a hog.

  123. What happens when the republican governors from NJ and Virginia ask for "federal assistance". I believe this is totally commie and socialist and support "states rights".

No federal assistance to NJ or Virginia. You are on your own fuckers. Deal with it.

Lastly, I have seen some amazing wet tits. They have been bouncing and you can see nipples underneath shirts and I thank Sandy for that. Wet bouncing tits, it doesn't get better.

    tits.

  124. The Wizard of Oz is the perfect chick flick. Women, fighting to the death, over a pair of shoes.

  125. My ex brother-in-law posted some pictures of his neighborhood over in Jersey. Power lines hanging. Doesn't look good. Said his kid's tuba is missing.

  126. Titus writes: No federal assistance to NJ or Virginia. You are on your own fuckers. Deal with it.

That's ridiculous Titus. That's like the Red Cross saying no disaster blood supplies for the fabulous because their populations don't donate. We can do better.

  127. Thank God for Michael Haz.

Jesus Christ, the rest of you people.

Too much theory leads to too little heart, and it even can lead to brain-cell leakage, which is a very sad thing to witness.

    Whatever. So it goes.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Glad you and Lisa are OK, Trooper.

As for the rest of you (except for the couple-so who ought know you're excepted, in addition to the obvious apart who is Haz):

    FU. Full stop, WSs.

  129. Narcissistic, opportunistic, gratuitously snarky shits that you have so manifestly proved yourself to be. I always thought that, maybe, it was just schtick; at least, I always I hoped that was so. Now, you've proved yourselves. As I said: Full stop, WSs. Congrats!

  132. Lord knows I have had plenty of bad days, many of the right here at TY. I might take those comments personally if I could understand them.

Hope you are doing okay in the storm, R,L.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Woke up this morning thinking of all who are in the eye of the storm. Hope everything and everyone is ok. Looking at some the photos. Wow.

rcommal. Geeze lighten up. Some people just have to whistle past the graveyard. Laugh in the face of danger. You know that Titus is performance art. Joking at danger is a human trait. It doesn't mean that people don't care or that they aren't scared.

    ReplyDelete
  134. It appears that much of NYC is out of power and will be for about a week. So all we can do is hope that Trooper and Lisa are high and dry. Drinking some wine and enjoying some meatballs with a nice bottle of wine.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Aside from Titus spraying liquid loaf into the wind, I don't see the behavior of anyone here (other than "Sandy") qualifying for a heartfelt FU. I've got no clue what a WS might be.

What I saw happening last night was a group of TY regulars checking in, expressing concern for Trooper, writing about their lives, responding to banter, and commenting in a way that registered them as real and present.

I'm up for invoking Jesus Christ on behalf of all who need His Presence, Peace, Comfort and Light today, especially those experiencing fear, death, and destruction.

  136. I think Katrina's aftermath led a lot of people to become a bit desensitized. I saw people tweeting things to the effect of "Well, this storm better be really awful or I'll be disappointed!"

But I think, ultimately, most people find a heart when confronted with the devastation of communities and loss of life from any type of major storm.

    So yeah. Human.

    ReplyDelete
  137. I think Katrina's aftermath led a lot of people to become a bit desensitized

Agreed. That and the media's breathless anticipation of a big story causing people to be less gullible or willing to believe the hype.

"OMG....It is horrible....we're all gonna die...worst storm evah!!! Panic...run for the hills.!!!!"

Then....not much happening or a lot less than the hype. So people tend to go. Meh.

It doesn't mean that we don't care or that it couldn't be bad. But, the media has ruined it by being the freaking boy who cried wolf, over and over and over.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Katrina was horrendous. I have been watching Treme, which is set in NO after the storm. The common theme is "gone". People are gone, things are gone, buildings are just gone.

Am reading a book of essays by John Sullivan - he wrote one about his experiences in the post-Katrina Gulf Coast area - "gone" was his theme, as well.

Last year I read Rising Tide, about the 1927 storm and flood that ravaged the Mississippi Delta and points south. After that, the old ways of living in Greenville and other towns were gone. New Orleans - forever changed. My father lived through that flood but didn't talk much about it - it was horrible.

I remember hurricane Hazel in '54. That was a bad storm that killed something like 300 people. I also lived through Agnes in '72, Fran in '96 and many others that weren't as up close and personal as those two were to me and my family.

As for Sandy - we are still getting a lot of wind, very little rain and other than some trees blown down, no real damage here in this part of NC. I cannot imagine what it is like for those bearing the brunt of this particular storm - it is a monster. Monstah!

Hope Troop is mopping the floor with something other than sea water and avoiding any urban dictionary definition of that phrase.

And thanks, Darce - you are a comfort.

  139. rcommal lighten up. i was just trying to provide some levity to the proceedings.

I did really see a tuba roll by and I stand by my statement that the Tin Man is a major mo.

    tits.

  140. I caught a piece of Hurricane Brenda back in '68 on a family vacation to FLA. I was 8. It rained so hard my dad had to stop driving because the wipers couldn't keep up. He forgot to take the drain plug out of the boat we were towing and it filled up--soaking all our clothes and camping gear.

  146. Curiously enough, the back door approach to Oz Oddities, following the Titus report of the huge blowing tuba, hit on those attributes/qualities most often tested by trauma and required for survival and recovery.

A heart, a brain and courage. May awareness of all three be realized in those dealing directly with the impact of Sandy on their lives, loved ones, homes, neighborhoods and businesses.

    ReplyDelete
  147. WS...Wayward Sons?

Carry on, there'll be peace when you are done. Lay your weary head to rest. Don't you cry no more.

    Maybe that was it?

  148. Whoopity Shit.

That's all I got to say.

  149. Curiously enough, the back door approach to Oz Oddities, following the Titus report of the huge blowing tuba, hit on those attributes/qualities most often tested by trauma and required for survival and recovery.

2/3rds true, MamaM. Titus failed to mention Ray Bolger's role--unless you count the straw man he erected last night which I reacted to. 'Twas rcommal who brought up braincells. We still count rcommal as a member here, don't we?

    ReplyDelete
  150. We still count rcommal as a member here, don't we?

With bafflement, puzzles, nebulous non sequiturs (which oddly enough link to derailment-thought disorders!), syllablistic fallacies, whorling fingerprints, blowing tubas and "things are not as they seem" as par for the course here, what's a unidentified WS or two among friends?

As a relative newcomer, it seems to me as if the practice of any of the above would qualify one to be considered part of the greater whole!

  154. Well, I guess now is as good a time as any for a big announcement.

Trooper's been very successful at expanding his business into the cyber world, and any good businessman always has his eye out for additional revenue streams. So, he and I have been kicking around various ideas to help him keep on expanding. I'm not the best retail guy out there, but what I lack in smarts I can make up for in hard work.

One of the things I noticed when I moved south is that fashion takes two or three years to find its way down here. It's not as bad as it was 30 years ago, but there is still a lag factor. When my sister lived in Astoria, I'd buy last year's fashions for next to nothing and look like a million bucks in North Carolina. Cutting edge for around these parts.

Anyhow, we were talking about the risk Trooper takes in developing any new line. How much to order is always tricky. So, I suggested that overstocking wouldn't be a problem if we opened...wait for it...a Lee Lee's Valise outlet...Ta Da!!

Trooper can keep new stuff rotating through the home store and we can move the excess merchandise down here, marketing it as the latest fashion from the Big Apple, right here in North Carolina.

I've scouted some retail space, which is dirt cheap right now. Here's a picture of the location. Well, it's the sign for the store, looking across the road at the shopping center that's across from our location.

We've got a few more details to hammer out.

    ReplyDelete
  155. Oceanside has an enormous Mexican Fleamarket in an abandoned drive-in. Across the street is some vacant retail space. This is all just a couple miles from the beach. If franchises are in the offing, I want in on the ground floor.

  156. "Pictures of Lake Michigan, on the east side with a 21.7 foot wave recorded 40 miles offshore."

    Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings
in the rooms of her ice-water mansion.
Old Michigan steams like a young man's dreams; the islands and bays are for sportsmen.
    And farther below Lake Ontario
takes in what Lake Erie can send her,
And the iron boats go as the mariners all know with the Gales of November remembered.

    ReplyDelete
  157. I went swimming in Lake Huron back in the 1980s. What I remember most about it was how gentle the slope of the bottom was - even my youngest son could get a quarter mile into the water without even coming close to getting in over his head. I was out a half mile or so and still walking on the bottom - absolutely astounding.

My favorite flea market was the one in San Jose. Used to go there in the 1970s. Great Mexican pastries. I bought a big pile of old Rolling Stone magazines from the harmonica player Charlie Musselwhite. Those were the days...
