Commenter Memories Number 139 Allie is scared of tuxedos

Allie has always been afraid of formal wear and refuses to date anyone who shows up in a tuxedo. She insisted that her husband wear a pair of bib overalls when they got married and never saw a James Bond movie. She once kicked a maitre de in the balls when he pulled out a chair for her. Her husband never asked her to explain her quirky behavior because he really loved her the way she was.

You see it all went back to a terrible memory from childhood.

Allie: I have some super 8 film of a Milwaukee street parade from the 1960s. I got it converted to digital format. I wish I could upload it to Youtube but it's in DVD format and it needs to be spliced out of other footage.

If someone could recommend a user friendly, Mac friendly software that could help me it would be appreciated.

Chickie, I remember going to many 4th of July parades in Milwaukee, Smith Park, before we moved to the far northwest side. Oompah pah bands and Mayer Maier singing at he bandshell in Smith Park and those delicious cups of ice cream with the little wooden spoon.

In winter Smith Park had an ice rink and they palyed music and served hot cocoa in the Pavillion. We used to walk ther alone on a winter evening to skate, that's how safe Milwaukee used to be.

I wouldn't go to Smith Park today in anything other than an armored vehicle. With needle-proof tires.

But! I do remember those cups of ice cream with the wooden spoon thingies! They used to be given away at the end of July 4th parades in Hales Corners, the village where I grew up. I want one now, in fact.

Are you able to watch the Oscars? What about when the Dolans win an Emmy and our bartender wears a tux?

It elevates someone in my eyes when they reveal their fears. My daughter has anxiety and one of the things that helps is she'll always express her fears to people she trusts. I'm terrified of bats and make no bones about it. TOP cannot even admit a fear of flying. If she does, I will immediately stop goin' Joe Frazier on her.

One house I owned had a colony of bats in the attic. Didn't fear them, didn't hang out with them, we just left each other alone.

Not crazy about snakes, saw one the other day, let him go his way, I went mine.

I don't even take a shovel to the liberals I have to deal with on a daily basis - mainly try to get money from them - they are useful idiots that way.

DBQ, My sister is that way but it's a rational fear, she's deadly allergic to bees. Have you ever been stung?

Sixty, I'm not fond of snakes but they don't scare me like bats. I would run into traffic if a bat is around..I go batshit!

Last time we had a bat in the house, we managed to "guide" it out an opened door using sheets. It was the coolest thing to watch happen and far less panicky than trying to capture the creature that had been flying from living room to dining room, making ungodly noises, aiming at our heads and pulling up inches away. We found out via internet that bats will typically fly around an enclosed area in a repeat pattern for two or three loops, scanning for open space and head for it. Since humans intent on nailing them aren't usually standing with their backs to a wall, they tend to get flown at, and it's scary as heck. By closing all doors but one and holding up a sheet to protect our space, we provided an opportunity for the bat to use its mad radar skills, find the opening and leave the house under it's own power, which it did. Two minutes, and it was gone.

I don't like snakes. I've touched them, held one, and seen plenty but I still find them creepy.

I get stung and bitten by insects all the time. I don't fear them. Don't like hornets or yellow jackets, as those stings are particularly painful.

I pet bumble bees - they are very placid insects. Fuzzy, too. Non-aggressive.

After getting many ant bites I am now at war with the ants. Didn't used to care, but now I spray them with Raid. You ants have pissed me off, and at least for now, I can win that battle. Ultimately, they win. Well, them and the worms.

Sixty, After I brought our son home from Colombia we couldn't understand his fear of ants. I just happened to mention this to a guy I know who does a lot of biz in South America[Oscar Mayer]. He told me about fire ants and how quickly they can strike and kill. Live and learn.

I'm really not afraid of penguins, but I am scared of heights, cliffs, bluffs, edges of mountain passes, ladders and such. Strangely, I love to fly.
