Vacations are great.....

Especially if you can spend it with your honey.

And your family.

So make plans to have fun with them tomorrow to start off the New Year right!

Parents dead. Sister no speakum to. Nephew nice enough I suppose but takes all the standard PC positions which seem to be the only positions for under forties. So hard to talk to. Niece escaped to Europe, My cousin Arthur, the bigshot baby doctor at Duke, makes me seethe with resentment. The past. I love the past. Did I tell you my long departed Uncle George was a window washer and supported a wife and two kids doing that for forty five fifty years? At all the family get-togethers he would fall asleep the poor guy from exhaustion. Little did I know. A kid. What does a kid know? You weep, you appreciate, too late. Happy New Year All.

You need to spend more than six bucks on your cell phone. Or I need cataract surgery. One of those is true.

Haz, I think it's a pager camera!!

Or you are drunk.

That is always my position.

Hey when you see the underwater snorkel photos of me in a bathing suit you are going to thank your lucky stars that it is fucking blurry.

TY, You're so wrong..I want to see it all! My favorite part of the Carnival was the freak show.

I don't think so nd.

Todd Browning would throw up.

Didn't you mean Ricou Browning?

chickelit said...

Ask Ritmo--he's an expert on browning.

And good on the Baron Zemo character the other night for objecting to to what Ritmo said to Shouting Thomas.

A question for the elder statesmen and stateswomen who congregate here: Was there an age at which you felt that the world had decided that you were no longer relevant?

I'm seeing that now, and it looks like 2013 will be the dawning of the Age of Being No Longer Relevant, at least for me. I don't feel that way, but it's the message I'm getting.

It's like there's an invisible tattoo on my forehead, invisible to me but not to everyone else, that says "No Longer Relevant."

Waitresses and nurses now call me 'young man'. God, I hate that. It is so patronizing, so condescending and so humiliating. Young people at work ask a question then ignore the answer. They run backwards and forwards testing, sensitivity analyses, market change gaming...and proudly announce their answer, which is about the same as mine. They have pivot tables, I have judgment. Judgment is not valued; data is, even if the data is flawed.

When did men stop shaving, grooming, combing their hair and wearing shirts that had been ironed? And piercing your ear with, what, and elephant tusk? Why?

It won't be much longer before I'm going to be the guy yelling "Get off my lawn!"

I used to think that living on one of those age-restricted places like The Villages was a bad idea. Now that time has passed a bit, I'm starting to get it. It's the need to be around those in similar circumstances; people who are labeled No Longer Relevant but want to have one or two more decades of fun before clocking out.

2013 is going to be interesting.

Eww, that's creepy. I prefer the blunt honesty in the other direction. Last week, out walking the dog, I met a guy in the neighborhood who knew my dog and said he'd met my granddaughter too.

I don't have a granddaughter.

chickelit said...

Indeed. Look at current events. An honest attempt in New York to charge a woman with hate crimes instead of an honest look at preventative measures. The world is obsessed with retribution and redistribution, much like healthcare is still obsessed with acute care rather than preventative care.

2013 will be an excellent opportunity for crisis management.

What? who Baron Zemo is? I think she picked up on that first. I'm more bothered by the fact that people come and go there and then some even die. Yet we're supposed to give two shits about her or her precious causes?

The Dude said...

Today's crisis to manage - replace a rotted floor joist in a crawl space. Beyond that, I can't really get excited about whack jobs in NYC, unless they are willing to crawl in there with me and hold the joist up while I nail it in place.

The Dude said...

CL - you are being too hard on Outhouse - she has produced gay sons and she wants them to be able to get married, not just spread retroviruses to their anonymous partners.

Take pity on the ol' broad - she skis in a dress for God's sake. Howdy Doody thinks her jowls are over the top. She reads while she is asleep. She has admitted she can't hear or understand music, which explains her love of Dylan.

Long may her bloated cankles bestride the earth - she is an Obama fellatrix through and through, and she gets what she deserves.

windbag said...

More sobering is looking back and recognizing moments in which I thought I was still relevant, but wasn't.

ndspinelli said...

Haz, We're still relevent to those who matter.

Dust Bunny Queen said...

Re: Haz's point. I'm beginning to feel that way in some public or shopping situations, especially clothes shopping, or just walking down the street. Sort of a brief veil of invisibility. Old person walking.

However, when we are shopping for big ticket items, just bought a great plasma and surround sound system, we get attention paid to us. Old people, with MONEY, walking.

Hanging with other people our age or people who know us, easy to do in a small town, we don't get that same feeling. So, yes, I can see where something like the Villages could be appealing. It could also be stifling.

As to how young people dress and look, I too get the "get off my lawn urge"......but then I remember how we dressed and looked back in the hippie dippie days and guess what goes around comes around.

Growing old gracefully is an art. I believe that it was in my mid-late thirties when I faced this. My daughter was growing into a beautiful, adventurous young woman and while I still FELT young (and still do at heart) I realized......It was not my turn anymore and it was HER turn to shine. So....exit stage left and take a supporting role.

Michael Haz said...

Nick - Thanks. Good point.

DBQ - Yeah, I get the child part. We raised ours to be independent while other parents were doing the opposite. As a result our kids are....duh....independent! While our friends' kids are still crashing at home, or relying on their parents for daycare services, ours have finished undergrad and grad school, married, bought their own homes and are conducting their lives as adults. I'm proud, but there's a ironic 'chickens coming home to roost' part to it.

Anyhow. What got me started was thinking about the great shove over the cliff would start with older people first. Aiiiieeeee!

blake said...

Never been relevant.

Never will be relevant.

I'm cool with that.

chickelit said...

relevant is the guy on Althouse, right blake? I thought you two didn't get along well.

Happy New Year to all. I'm 60 today[11:30p]. My old man loved the deduction. Going to see Django and have some Chinese. Got a nice bday present this morning, tix to the Packer game on Saturday. It's a fucking night game!!

chickelit, your list of Lost Commenters at TOP was an interesting comment. She should've made it into a year-end post.

Arrivals and Departures

I get the impression that TOP is like SNL, in that people have always thought it was in decline. And they're mostly right.

Happy birthday, you old tax deduction!

A revenant has a trunk, I think.

I think it's less that we didn't get along and more that he's (she's?) a douche.

Congrats on making it that far, Nick!

Hi Everyone,

Happy New Year.

I have been in NYC with hubby all weekend.

5 star accomies.

I went to a Fish concert at MSG Saturday. Can you belive I would do anything with a fish?

How are you?

Have a fab New Years.

The hubby and I have fought all weekend-what a drag. I got to go into work today at our New York office and was glad to get away from the bitch. I would love to see you all try going out to dindin with a vege-it's enough to make me want a divorce. He is giving me a check tonight though and took me shopping all weekend to spend money on me. I got a couple thousand dollars worth of clothes so I feel a little better (and I am the older one-I love the fact that he pays for me and I am the old one). All dinners, shows, dog day care, everything he pays for when we go somewhere. I am trying to work him over into paying my mortgage-that would be really sweet. I take the Acela tomorrow at 8:45 so I can pick up the rare clumber by 2:00 from day care.

Anywhoo, wishing you and yours the happiest of New Years.

toodles.

Happy New Year!

Where's the mistletoe?

Darcy said...

Glad you had a nice time, Trooper. I cruised a similar path. Curacao is boring even when everything is open.

I did like the beach in Aruba because it was a really hot day but the wind kept us cool. But by far the prettiest place was St. Thomas.
I would go back there tomorrow if I could.

The Dude said...

Hey Darce - guess what - that maple tree I took down had mistletoe growing in it. I kept one sprig of it, my brother took one home with him. There is wild mistletoe growing all over the neighborhood - it really stands out this time of year.

I liked St. Thomas, too. Took a boat over to St. Johns, toured that one - saw a mahogany tree growing in a park - that was awesome!

Darcy said...

If you're wearin' it, you get a smackeroo, Sixty! :P

Michael Haz said...

*Holds up mistletoe and scans the room for Miss Darcy*

About the "relevant' post earlier - I apologize for it being such a downer. I've been whacked with the upper respiratory crud this week, requiring a trip from the cabin to a local ER. The meds are beginning to help, and I'm feeling better in all regards. Just slap me if it happens again.

I'm back home now, arrived early enough to avoid the banging and crashing of New Year's Eve traffic. I'm staying in, too. New Year's Eve is amateur night.

Michael Haz said...

Speaking of banging and crashing - WTH is the group sex dealio going on between some of the usual smurfs at TOP? It's among some of the more vile stuff posted there in a long while. That place is toxic.

Darcy said...

You get a big kiss, Mr. Haz! Happy New Year! And your post wasn't a downer -- I get it, totally. I was trying to say that I'm probably only relevant in my own mind. :)

But seriously, wishing you many more New Years, and a lot more cruising and cabin time.

Darcy said...

There's group sex going on at TOP? I missed it! I did see the end of a thread that Ritmo and Jay ruined. And Inga. I guess that's happening a lot there?

Michael Haz said...

Darcy - it's on the Hillary thread. The worst of it starts at 4:13 or thereabouts.

And thank you!

Michael Haz said...

And a big kiss back! Heavens, where are my manners?

Dust Bunny Queen said...

I recall someone at TOP (or was it here) warning that 'someone' would wear out her welcome in short order. And it was so.

Darcy said...

Eww. I looked. Eww. Eww. Eww.

I'm surprised that didn't get deleted.

The Dude said...

Wait, who are they talking about - Althouse, Ingo or Hillary!?

Michael Haz said...

Yep. We original commenters were a far, far classier bunch.

Michael Haz said...

Especially the women. Darcy, Freeman, Ruth Anne and Victoria were (and are) far, far more gracious, funny and interesting than any of the current crop over there.

Michael Haz said...

Oops. I inadvertently left out DBQ. Sorry, Q!

The Dude said...

Hey - who you callin' classy? Watch it! ;^)

chickelit said...

Inga and Althouse are quite alike in one regard: they are the only two females who ever voiced concern over the comments becoming a "right-wing echo chamber." I distinctly recall Althouse once writing that: I will not allow these comments to become an echo chamber." And Inga? Well that's been her wrinkled raisin d'etre over there all along.

chickelit said...

It doesn't matter for Althouse if a cause is clearly one sided; her impetus is: "When I encounter a controversy at t[he] late stage of one-sidedness, my instinct is to develop the other side." This is the lawyerly side of Althouse -- and certainly not a very human side. It's a side that says every cause must have two sides. This reasoning befits a law professor who must train minds to see both sides of controversy. But the world is not--thank God--a litigious courtroom.

Happy New Year.

Irrelevancy songs

Angry Young Man by Billy Joel (my favorite of his).

Nowhere Man by the Beatles.

Take the Long Way Home by Supertramp, but because lawyers suck, can't seem to find a version by Supertramp, so here's Roger Hodgson, who wrote it.

Goodbye by Elton John. Last track on Madman Across the Water album.

Not that any of this matters.
