Next to "The Big Country", the worst we-painted-ourselves-into-a-corner-and-we-have-to-come-up-with-a-really-stupid-unbelievable-resolution-so-the-picture-will-make-money ending in the history of movies.

The logical ending would have to have been have The Duke try to kill Natalie and Jeff Hunter has to shoot it out with him - and almost certainly kill him.

But we couldn't do that.

Hey, just because the ending stinks doesn't mean the movie doesn't have its redeeming moments.

The scene in the ranch house where The Duke's brother and his family realize the Comanches are all around them and they'll have to fight for their lives is probably the best reason the movies have ever provided why people should take pride in their country's history since it shows the price that was paid in terms of everyday people to settle it.

BTW, anyone who wants to see a fight like that where the family wins should see "The Unforgiven".

And, anyway, there's got to be something right with a picture that inspired one of Buddy Holly's greatest hits.

PS Ironic that Holly, a native of Lubbock TX, came from the part of TX where the story takes place.

What you fail to realize is that Ethan Edwards always loved his sister in law and thought of Debbie as his own. His drive and determination to rescue her led to that ten year search. He had the opinions of his time. Ford doesn't sugarcoat it. He wanted to kill her because he saw her as polluted by her being Scar's concubine. But when he held her in his arms he saw his beloved. And he stayed his hand. He found redemption in that moment. That is why it is a great movie.

To cite "Unforgiven" in the same breath as "The Searchers" is like pairing Carol Herman with Natalie Wood.

It just ain't right partner.

No, not "Unforgiven", "THE Unforgiven" - Burt Lancaster, Charlie Bickford, Lillian Gish, and Audrey Hepburn.

Great movie - and, no, I'm not a big fan of Clint after he stopped being Rowdy Yates - too much moral relativism.

Another take on the same genre is "Flaming Star", probably the only good movie Elvis ever made. Excellent story of divided loyalties during the Comanche wars.

PS Pairing Carol Herman with either of the Wood sisters is like, well, unless you were into girl-on-girl, it's just not right.
