56 is a terrible number

We had a tough day yesterday. We spent all day at a wake for the husband of one of my wife's friends. She has a group of about six or seven girls that she has been friends with since the first grade. They get together at least once or twice a year for dinner or whatever. Anyway one of the husbands passed away suddenly and we had to go to Jersey to be there for her as is only right.

The crazy thing is that the guy was fifty six. Now that is a touchy number for us. You see my Dad, Granddad, and five uncles on my fathers side all died at 56. So for years I have been telling my wife "You can be mean to me now but I am only around till I am 56 and then you will be sorry." Then she punches me and tells me I take after my mother and will be around a long time and she will haunt me if I leave her. We have been doing this for about ten years now. And fifty six is only a couple of years away.

So when I heard that this guy had passed I asked "So how old was he?" "Fifty six." "See?" And she punched me.

It worked out okay for LT (at least when he was playing). He had a few problems after the fact.

You are haunted like the Mick. A lifestyle change is possible, paisan. I did it and do not feel deprived. For me, the key was exercise, walking and weight training. Back/neck problems have put weights on the back burner, but walking continues. Both my grandfather[56!!] and old man[72] died of strokes. I promised myself I would do everything possible to not leave my family w/ the grief of an early death. I'll be 60 this year and I'm healthier than I was from age 30-50..much healthier. My diabetes is under control and my cholesterol is superb.

You have control my friend, and you obviously love your family. I know a stubborn willfull asshole like you can do it if you are resolved. You don't give up pasta, sausage, pizza, etc. You just eat it less often and you eat more lean protein. You will find the balance quicker than you think. you will want to exercise rather than dread it. I will pray for you today, asking the Good Lord to let you see you have control over your health.

Love,

Nick

Have you had a comprehensive physical? It's best to know what's going on and then take it from there, exercise is great and nesessary, but we have to conquer what we eat first. I know several people who have lost over a hundred pounds and reversed some very scary conditions.

Hey Nick, I still eat plenty of sausage, just no bun.

Get your minds out of the gutter.

Go on a health kick for the show. That should be a pretty good story line.

I was also reading on what assholes AMC were to Frank Darabont.

Nick, I'm going to be 66 this year and I lift weights. I only bench press 30 pounds. No other lifting, but I shadow box with 3 pound weights. I'm just trying to keep my shoulders loose. May I suggest a treadmill? Putting one in front of the TV is the only way to go. With a treadmill you can walk no matter what the weather is like. Avoid sex while on the treadmill.

Yup, treadmill sex is tricky. It's all about balance amd multitasking.

I love my treadmill, I rarely miss a day, unless it's warm out then I try to make it around the lake , which I never do, but trying is half the battle. I have little three pound weights I use daily for upper body strength, I actually feel my biceps and triceps!

I don't believe we have much control over when we go, though if diet and exercise make you feel as though you're getting some control, all to the good. What I do think is that beyond a certain age, let's say 50, a conscious decision to do what you want to do and not do what you don't want to do (and to hell with what others say or think) gives you the best chance to live healthy and live long. Though it's still very much in the hands of the gods.

Thanks Allen, I am on my 3rd treadmill. I use it during the winter but when I'm in San Diego it's the beach..the hard compacted sand @ low tide is the perfvect surface. I get in 10-12 miles a day when I'm out here. I average ~7-8 when i'm in Wi. both street/bike path walking and treadmill. I do watch the tube on the treadmill and sex is difficult enough for me w/o complicating it!!

I agree w/ you about shadow boxing. Do you move your feet or just throw punches? I'm guessing w/ the weights you just stand and throw.

ricpic, I agree genetics are the most important. But one rationalizes if they don't think they can positively effect their health through diet/exercise.

My oldest brother died at 54. When I turned 55 I thought I had it made. I blew out my mitral valve a few days later. Had it repaired, and am now approaching 62.

I don't lift weights, instead I work. Walk the dogs.

My next oldest brother died at 65 the day before last Easter. He smoked and drank all of his adult life. If I don't make it to 65 I am going to be pissed.

Sorry for your loss, Troop, I hope you get a physical, and if the deaths in your family are related to cardiac issues, I hope you have a good doctor.

I had dye injected whichever vein it is that ascends from one's leg to one's heart - the doc then was able to check all my coronary arteries. They were fine then.

That's kind of an extreme test, not inexpensive, but it might be worth it in the long run, assuming you want a long run.

Mostly I'll walk around when I shadow box. I also swing the weights in different angles. Also, when walking on the treadmill, I'll tighten my stomach muscles and hold them that way for as long as I can.

The advantage of exercising every day is so when you die, they'll say, "Well, he looks good doesn't he."

I think that everyone went for a walk.

Queen of de Nile.

There is absolutely no question that ones lifestyle affects their health and longevity. Exercise actually changes your cell's mitochondria, making metabolism at the cellular level function better. Metabolic Syndrome is as real as a heart attack and even if genetically predisposed, one can negate the effects by diet and lifestyle.

Of course one can be healthy and fit and get hit by a bus, but at least they were able to walk across the street instead of using one of those scooter thingies.
