The unbelievable thing is that he isn't wearing his black wingtips. There's a famous photo of Nixon walking the beach at San Clemente in dress shoes. But that was after Watergate. May not have been the most lovable fellow but not nearly the monster he was made out to be. In fact, as this picture shows, he was very much the average suburban dad with picturebook fambly.

In fact I once read that the person he most resembled in fiction was of all people...Mr Roberts from the movie of the same name with Henry Fonda.

He was an junior officer in the Navy who worked hard and took care of his men but never got the chance to do anything heroic even though he volunteered all the time.

I heard once that he ran a Naval canteen/bar, in the Pacific, during the war.

I thought he made a bundle playing poker during WWII, and used it to finance college after the war. He certainly had a poker face.

Always trying to fool the people. That's why he was tricky Dick to everyone but Pat.

She knew the real reason.
