Party like it's 1999

The dude or whatever that did the Prince impersonation was pretty good. He ran and danced all over the stage and had Prince's act down pretty good. Since the girls were all eighties girls they loved it as they sang along.

Hi everyone!

How are you?

I am terrific, thanks for asking.

No time to mingle.

The day was crazy.

Now I have to take a candidate out for dindin at 5 star dining. Resies are very hard to come by. No plate is under $60.00 and any "sides" are minimum of $20.00

He's from Berkeley, gross.

Anywho, make it a terrific night.

Toodles!

Hey chick, I was about to expand my comment to you on the Boston accent at TOP, but that thread's gone on to the awfulness of Ritmo bashing vbspurs on her first day back, so I figured I'd post it here instead. As an added bonus, by posting it here I can invite TTB to correct me.

So here goes, w/ apologies to everyone else....

The Boston accent is hard for outsiders to master b/c it doesn't dispense with "r" altogether, but just moves it around.

So, in the case of "spam trap", "trap" simply remains "trap". OTOH, rearrange those same letters and "part" becomes "paht".

Sometimes those dropped r's get added to entirely different words ("sherbet" becomes "sherbert"), and sometimes they just get rearranged inside a word ("modern" becomes "morden").

IOW, they talk as weirdly as they vote.

Except for TT, who I imagine votes quite sanely.

I have a friend from Mahtha's Vinyahd, she explained that unlike Cliff on Cheers, words like Norm become more of a Nawm sound. Aw replaces or. That might just be an island thing.

I used to work in foundries in Southie. One evening whilst walking to the Tremont Avenue elevated I was accosted by a car full of yutes. They yelled, threatened, but did not act. How they could tell I was not from there is still a mystery all these years later.

Years later I worked with a guy from Southie who's family had ties to Whitey Bulgah's gang. I told him of that incident, he denied having participated, but said, essentially, forget it Jake, it's Southietown. That aspect of the 'hood seemed nicely captured in Good Will Hunting, which is what I do when I need new furniture.

I'm working on a parsimonious theory of the Boston accent. My experiments so far have only been conducted on me, and so are totally bogus. But you can try it and see what happens.

Here's the theory: To tock like a Nothen New Inglendah, wrap your arms across your body like you're freezing cold, start shivering, and then try to talk.

I think it comes out as Bostonian.

Hi everyone, the meal was supreb. I shop on Winter Hill and the guys are so fucking hot.

Tough, with guns, big guns, and totally libtards.

BTW Southie is not what is once was. It has turned into Yuppies with baby carriages and fab coffee shops. The Good Will Hunting types have been priced out and now live in Brockton and Fall River (where Jodi Foster was raped in The Accused). So please get your stereotypes straight men.

Take care and keep reaching for the sky.

Boston is truly fab yet very dangerous.

Has Mamam showed some tit in her lately? I am willing to give Palladian $1000 for the full Mamam rack and $5000 for Mamam showing the spread eagle-warts and unsightly pubes sprouting from all lands.

@Chip: So what you're saying is that "sperm" could never even be close to sounding like "spam" when spoken by a Southie?

chickelit said...

Sorry to be so explicit but you keep asking!!

Chip S. said...

Better ask Titus that question!

I'll just say that I never heard anyone in N.E. pronounce "sperm" in an unusual way in my limited time there. I guess that's why I thought you were riffing on "trap" rather than "spam".

Now I see that it was a pretty good line.

Chip S. said...

It's not that they can't pronounce "r', like Baba Wawa. It's that they sometimes prefer not to, like Bartleby.

Titus said...

Chick, the Southie Accent is gone. They have left, along with the whole forced bussing thing. They have been priced out.

They have been replaced by yuppies, who work at the newly formed Seaport District.

It is a completely different hood now.

chickelit said...

Whaling used to rule New Bedford, Chip. You have a dirty mind.

Titus said...

Southie has turned into young professionals with kids and young professionals who can't afford living in the city.

There may be a few remnants of "Southie' folks but they are minimal because they can not afford the new Southie.

Eastie or East Boston is next but it will take awhile to get rid of all the spics.

chickelit said...

BTW, I guess I'm tired of engaging Ritmo over there. He's just like Inga but more eloquent. Let him work people up and hijack things. Althouse doesn't seem to care--I think she enjoys him.

chickelit said...

Now I see that it was a pretty good line.

Since I rarely get feedback like that, I have to ask: does most of the stuff I leave like over there fall so flat?

rhetorical!

An honest answer might devastate my ego.

Chip S. said...

Sure, chick, sure. Next you'll try to tell me that "blowhole" and "Seamen's Bethel" aren't dirty, either.

Sorry, not buyin' that. I've been to N.B. It's one of the worst dumps I've ever seen. Wouldn't exist today w/o massive federal funds, I'd wager. It's vulgar thru and thru.

Chip S. said...

Don't be ridiculous. Your stuff is great.

But there are very few riffers at TOP. The place desperately needs a "like" icon.

Chip S. said...

Wait. No.

Come to think of it, a "like" button could have devastating consequences.

I just imagine silent, knowing nods of wry amusement. I don't want to see proof that my shit stinks up the joint.

Last night's happenings on that thread and "somebody's" deletion keys have shaken my faith in any fair and object good will of the Althouse blog. Another ratchet down in trust level.

On the Schadenfruede side, it appears that her Gatsby project has withered. I had higher hopes for that one--it started out reminding me of my own high school experience I described in The Best Teacher. We even analyzed "The Great Gatsby" in that class. Sadly, Althouse cannot measure up to even a good high school English teacher.

She is one stupid bitch and proves that every day. But she is a drunk.

Wasn't she recently writing that she was going to not go somewhere due to difficulties on the ground there? I can't be bothered to look it up, but that seemed nonsensical. That dim broad was never going to get on an airplane to go anywhere. Maybe she is too stupid to realize that she can't drive her TT to Cairo or Europe or wherever she was ranting about. That level of ignorance would not surprise me.

Oh, how I miss that place. Miss my kidney stone, too. About equally.

windbag said...

It seems to me that she is a stupid bitch without the drinking. Perhaps she drinks because she realizes that she is a stupid bitch and too weak to do anything about it?

What's missing from the: What we delete are bad faith comments, comments that we believe have the ulterior motive of destroying the conversation and driving people away from this forum are the words "randomly" and "when we feel like it".

The statement as it stands is currently not being honored or enforced with anything resembling good faith. This is my main disagreement with Althouse. In the long run, trust and integrity matter and both are compromised when she randomly deletes and fails to consistently follow through with her stated policy.

Whether the comments lost last night were deleted or caught in a filter is less of an issue to me than her willingness to allow Ritmo to destroy conversation after conversation and drive commenters away as if he was doing it all in good faith.

While Inga drives up the drama and the page views with her comments, Ritmo obfuscates under the guise of intellectual superiority and effectively shuts down good faith comment and discussion.

By allowing this sort of behavior to control her blog, destroy conversation and drive people away from her forum, Althouse compromises her integrity and her brand.

chickelit said...

Well put, MamaM.

chickelit said...

Out of fairness, one could say that commenters like edutcher, Shouting Thomas, and Inga also dominate conversations. But a key difference is that they tend to rely on personal experience or anecdotes. It's easy to counter them when personal experience doesn't corroborate.

Commenters like Ritmo and garage tend to rely on cherry-picked facts drawn from the internet. Facts are powerful, but incomplete facts driven with a vengeful opinion are deadly to conversation--witness his treatment of that commenter last night "I'm not finished with you yet." I'm tempted to dub such tactics "Seven Machismo."

This is ultimately Althouse's weakness apparent as well--not having really lived the full breadth of her claims.

When I met her and Meade last summer in Madison, we chatted a bit about commenters. I kept raising the point that some people read the blog specifically because of the comments section. Meade seemed to agree but Althouse actually seemed annoyed. I found this odd and unusual. It's like a celebrity disliking her fans.

Anyways, I reapplied for the PTO bar exam (it had a 56% pass rate) and this should happen sometime in the next 30 days.

Good job, CL - hope it goes well for you this time.

As for AA disdaining the little people - that's not surprising at all. Everything about her says "elitist". And narcissist. She is the smartest person in the room, and how dare you not acknowledge that fact?

You need to find better people to hang around with, seriously.

I don't have to time to be one of the little people over there.

She always disliked the commenters.

When I met her all she could do is make fun of Titus. And quiz Palladian and me about Titus and if she should ban him.

I mean he had just started posting there and was on a role in every thread. And she was talking about banning and deleting him.

That is where my eyes were opened. I mean if she did that to him...why wouldn't she do it to me....or the blogging cockroach...or Maxine Weiss...or whoever.

In the end in effect she did.

That's a mixed metaphor, Troop. Pissing on a fire hydrant maybe but "bust a nut"? Doesn't that require arousal of some sort? Perhaps I'm just not up on the urban lexicon.

I don't recall that sort of domination taking place a few years ago, not to the degree it does now.

Montana Urban Legend used to ramble on and on, with Trooper York and Titus adding their brand of asides while random trolls zinged in and out, GM blundered along and CrackMc went careening off on angry tirades, but it seems to me that shift happened following Carol Herman's tenure, "J's" threats, and TOP's tangle with the unions. IMO that's when the win/lose games of deception, deflection and domination started to play out with more intensity within the noble sounding bounds of a new but nebulous and sporadically enforced good/bad faith policy.

As the world turns, good still happens over there among the Chips. Dawgs bark, Roosters crow and Chickens known for laying an egg a day will do so as long as you continue to keep them healthy and take the eggs away daily.

Good news on the re-app, chickelit.
