Have a hot dog!

Well it looks like hot dogs are winniing in the poll so far. Now there is a great dispute in hot dog land. What's better, grilled or boiled. Most people prefer grilled dogs hot from the barbecue. You know that is a summer treat. But I grew up on the boiled dog. I love the dirty water dogs from the carts in the city. And at Yankee Stadium I always get them from the guys who bring them to the seats and not the ones that are on the rollers at the concession stands.Nothing is better than a hot dog with kraut and mustard and red onions on a cold day while you are waiting to go see the Christmas tree at Rockefeller center. Or calling the guy over and getting a dog at your seat on a hot July night at the Stadium. That's a little slice of heaven.

So what do you like: grilled or boiled.

Critter dogs.

When I was in college, we frequented a bar away from the college. No other students, just locals, maybe a couple of faculty. The bartender was named Critter. He had the largest beer gut I've ever seen on a person. He boiled hot dogs in beer and sauerkraut in a crock pot. Best dogs on the planet.

There was a hand-written sign that said "Critter Dogs $1." It was old, yellowed, stained, wrinkled, and faded. So were most of the patrons.

Do you like Gray's Papaya?

Trooper York said...

Grey's is a lot of fun and the dogs are good and cheap. But I just love hot dogs. So I am easy. Any dirty water dog does it for me. I order from carts that my wife loses her mind over. The dirtier the better.

Windbag that sounds great. You know I am going to make up a batch the next times the guys come over to watch the game.

Grilled.

I like the crispy part of the skin.

Which doesn't happen when boiled.

But They are going to outlaw hot dogs soon too, you watch.

So boiled or grilled -- get em while you can.

JAL said...

And why does Althouse have you listed 4 times?

Too many hot dogs, I'll bet.

TitusJustShotaLoad said...

I have never liked any kind of hot dogs. None.

I love popsicles though.

TitusJustShotaLoad said...

Brats are very popular in Wisconsin. Think a big hot dog. I don't like Brats either.

I am not much of a meat eater.

I love some fish though. Yummm.

TitusJustShotaLoad said...

What are hot dogs made out of?

Pigs?

Gross.

I don't like bacon or ham either.

TitusJustShotaLoad said...

Give me a scallop drizzled with bread crumbs any day.

I am getting horny.

R any of U horny?

Do U want to talk dirty?

I have been a bad boy. I need to be disciplined. I promise daddy if you hit me I won't tell mommy. It will be our own little secret.

Trooper York said...

Well the rumor is someone is slipping her the hot dog, so it's ok if she's distracted.

I am just grateful for the links and the listing.

Trooper York said...

Hot dogs are like sausages. They are made out of whatever they got laying around.

TitusJustShotaLoad said...

What rumor? Have I missed something? Is Althouse getting some? I want details. Who, where, when, how long, missionary position only????

Let's hear about it.

He better not be a liberal.

TitusJustShotaLoad said...

The straightie men and some of the mos must be in an uproar regarding the possibility of Althouse getting some.

How are we coping?/

Why wasn't it one of us?

What did he have that we don't have?

TitusJustShotaLoad said...

Was that breakfast for him this morning?

Why didn't she ever make breakfast for me?????

Trooper York said...

Titus man, you have to pay attention.

I will let the professor speak for herself. I just tease her from a distance.

Ah, the windy streets, and
Ah, the papers whirling down the streets, and
Ah, a steaming dog in our half frozen mitts, and
Ah, the song of the city streaming in the streets all around and over us, and
Ah, we are young forever young forever young.

Here's a twist for you on hot dogs:

When I was a short order cook at the Rod and Gun Club at RAF Lakenheath a couple of years ago (okay, maybe 20. Or so.) they cooked hot dogs by...

Deep Fat Frying.

Right along with the french fries.

I don't believe I ever tried one myself, but we would sell several of them a shift.

Personally, I like my dogs grilled. When I can't get outside to grill 'em, I throw my dogs under the broiler.

FOR TITUS- pay attention, some girls like the tube steak too.

I know an attorney, she lives in Mad-town,
She's the one that really gets down.
When she boogie,
She do the tube steak boogie.
Well now boogie little baby,
Boogie woogie all night long.

Asante Samuel said...

Hahaha, that might be her in the old-timey swim cap. I see she prefers the two-handed tube steak grip.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

It takes two hands to handle a whopper, they say.

Heywood Floyd: I'd love a hot dog.

Walter Curnow: Astrodome. Good hot dogs there.

Heywood Floyd: Astrodome? You can't grow a good hot dog indoors.
Yankee Stadium. September. The hot dogs have been boiling since opening day in April. Now that's a hot dog.

Walter Curnow: The yellow mustard or the darker kind?

Heywood Floyd: The darker kind.

Walter Curnow: Very important.

The deep fried hot dogs are really good, Edjamikated! We used to do that in the little restaurant I worked for in high school. Mmmm...crunchy nitrates. :)

And here I thought it was a European thing. That was teh first and only time I ever saw it done.

I prefer a good ol' bratwurst instead of a 'dog. It's summer food though. It has to done on a grill and garnished with onion, sauerkraut, and mustard. Cheese is optional. Pickles on the side.
Of course brats go best with a cold brewski and some potato salad. If you wanna get real fancy, make some deviled eggs too.

So I'm voting present in this one.

Darcy said...

What'cha cookin' today, chicklit? :)

When I was about five I had some hot dogs and then, shortly after (and probably unrelated) vomited.

I didn't eat hot dogs for years after that. (Apparently our bodies do that: Make as averse to things that makes us sick, or are in proximity to sickness.)

I got over that very slowly but now I'm okay. Back in college, we used to get these spicy polish dogs from a cart, boiled--I've been trying to find any dogs that good since.

chickelit said...

Haven't decided yet Darcy. Going shopping later today though.

Remember the ZZ Top album with this photo inside? I was about 13 when it came out and I thought that that was just disgusting. Mexican food didn't really exist yet in Wisconsin (Taco Bell doesn't count).
Now I look at that photo and I start salivating. I guess I grew up.

Blake- I had the same revulsion for hot dogs too when I was a kid! I think I ate one with a piece of bone or something in it. It took me years to get over that. In high school, I developed a similar wretch-reflex to brandy--after one really bad experience.

Darcy said...

Yep. I've had the same experience with some foods! With my kid it is cotton candy (thank God!).

Oh, yeah, chickenlittle! Yum.

I feel the same way about Russian girls. There's a story behind that but I can't tell it here.

But watch that movie with Robert Duval and Marky Mark and the crazy beard guy if you want to get the jist of it.

LOL, Trooper!

These two Korean brothers move to New York and are very homesick. They have good jobs and a nice place to live but they can’t get there favorite food. Search and search as they may they can not find a restaurant that serves dog. Finally one of the runs home and says “Come quickly brother I have found a restaurant that serves dog. It is called Nathans.” So they jump on the F train and ride out to Coney Island and rush up to the counter. “Please sir may we have some hot dog.” “Sure buddy, here you go two hot dogs with all the fixings.” One brother looked at the other and they both shook their heads. “That seems very nice sir, but do you have any other pieces beside the dick.”

Love my dogs, hot dogs included. No all-beef, no garlic and never boiled. I really prefer the ones made on those metal rolling grills, but only from places that don't do a lot of business because I like them well done. One of my favs is German dogs with natural casings, topped with sauerkraut cooked for hours and a whole lotta brown mustard. You KNOW when you take a bite into one of these babies. There is initial resistance followed by this burst of juice that can literally burn your tongue.

Trooper York said...

You are right Penny those are pretty good. I love all kinds of dogs. The only problem with the ones on the rollers is that you really don't know how long they have been there. But that's part of the fun. You can get a clue from the buns. If they are stale and moldy then you might be in trouble. But if the bun is fresh chances are the dog is edible.

Trooper York said...

Those are the kind you can get at the movies. When we were dating that used to gross out my wife. She would get popcorn and candy and soda and I would get a hot dog at the movies.

Penny said...

Now we are talking about something else entirely, Trooper.

BUNS!

Never, EVER take the delivery vehicle for granted. Frankly, (no pun intended), as a foodie, I look forward to buns getting their very own survey.

Trooper York said...

That will be part of our favorite roll poll. The entries will be:

Hot dog roll
Hamburger roll
Kaiser roll
Esther Rolle

Trooper York said...

I have used that joke before but I just like it.

And I love Esther Rolle.

When my mother was a girl from Tobacco Road, visiting her aunt in Forest Hills, Queens, her uncle took the kids to Coney Island. On the way back he stopped at a raw bar for oysters. Not knowing what they were, Mom ate a half dozen. Riding back in the rumble seat of his coupe back to Queens, the inevitable happened. We never had oysters at home.

Penny said...

Oysters have always been an "adult taste", Ralph. And a good thing...no?

I love hot dogs. Out here, Costco dogs are good when in a rush and the polish are even better. Polish and a soda $1.67. Now for anyone who loves Brats, Usingers in Milwaukee has Brats to die for, as the kids say... At home it's Hoenzollern rolls...with Krauts.
