Damn it is a long way to snorkle out to the ship

I don't think I can swim that far.

Because of the surface area to volume ratio, the carrying capacity of a ship increases by volume, while the water resistance (friction) only increases with the submerged area of its dimensions. In other words, a larger ship carrying 10,000 is intrinsically more fuel efficient than 10 which each carry 1,000. These considerations are important for any voyarage, be short or long.

I wonder if people got shots like that with the Costa Concordia?

We snorkeled at the John Pennecamp Coral Reef when we were in the Keys one year. You get on a big boat with about 40 others and putter out to the reef to enjoy the colors for about an hour or so. I got hit with a vertigo attack within about 5 minutes of getting in the water. WTF?? What's the solution...get back on the boat?...stay in the water? I managed to crawl back onto the ship and laid there until the time was up.

I doubt a cruise is ever in my future. One night when I couldn't sleep, I called Carnival's toll free number and chatted it up with one of the operators/salesmen. I asked him what the protocol was for someone becoming incapacitated while on a cruise. He said that they put you off at the next port and it's up to you to arrange travel home.

I told him that was too expensive and that my plan was to jump off the back of the ship and let the Coast Guard rescue me and fly me home at taxpayer expense. He said that Carnival didn't recommend jumping off the ship. Wimp.

I didn't see that movie. I hear the ending is not happy.

How to get back home in the event of an emergency is always a concern when travelling far away from home.

When I've gone on long trips, especially far away from modern healthcare I've paid the $400 or so for an annual membership in MedJet.

If I become critically ill or seriously injured, MedJet will send a medical aircraft to where I am and bring me and my travelling companion to a hospital near where we live.

It's a bit expensive, for sure. But then again, if you've broken your back, say, or had a heart attack somehwere far away, how do you plan on getting to a good hospital, or just getting home?

I carry a Spot Satellite Messenger with me when I'm motorcycling on back roads or in the wilderness where cell phones don't work. One push of the button notifies a first responder network (and designated family) of my location and need for emergency help.

I may die before they get there, but at least the next of kin will know where the body is.

The DNR tattoo on my chest covers that.
