Downton Abbey Starts Up Tonight

We have a lot of good TV tonight. Downton Abbey starts up tonight on PBS. We had not been fans until last year when we caught up with it on Net Flicks. So now we are going to stay current by taping the show when it airs on PBS.

Of course it conflicts with "The Real Housewives of Atlanta" "The Good Wife" and "The Mentalist." So I have to manage the DVR properly.

I remember when there were only five channels. Live is strange sometimes.

I mean it is not as if there was a football game or anything like that there.

My bride watches that show, I thought it was for women.

ndspinelli said...

Oh, and guys who sell their clothing. Never mind.

"Justified" starts up again on Tuesday.

"quarante-neufers"

It sounds pretty femme and contagious in French.

I remember when Madison had only 4 channels: channel 3 (CBS), channel 15 (NBC), channel 27 (ABC) and later, channel 21 (PBS). If NYC had a fifth, it must been a porn channel.

The Dude said...

And, he's back. But this time there is no Raid, no one with guts. So back he will remain.

chickelit said...

Whose back, Sixty? Witch antecedent?

windbag said...

We got one channel when I was a kid. CBS. If I wanted to watch anything else, I had to go to a friends house. Upstate New York is a third world existence.

chickelit said...

@Windbag: VHF vs UHF -- analogous to AM vs FM radio. CBS' signal was always the strongest in any town. But ABC carried images of Jan Brady who made it worth diddling with the antenna.

Trooper York said...

He is talking about Leisure Suit Larry who wants to start trouble over at Lem's. He really is a cunt.

chickelit said...

I see that now, Troop.

Michael Haz said...

The only one who can delete a LSL comment is the person who posted the topic. I have a No Meade policy on my topics; others follow their own policy.

He really needs to get a hobby. His comments simply cry "Look at me! Look at me!" Of course, his wife is married to her blog.

Looks like Deborah laid a spin kick on ol' Larry.

The Dude said...

He's too drunk to feel it. But she did good.

MamaM said...

Looks like Deborah laid a spin kick on ol' Larry.

Puh-leeze. Those two are both consummate players.

As for the charming "Deebs and Darce, Pall and Dudes" chum routine, it reminds me of one big, fun, peppy pile of frosted cake.

Trooper York said...

I don't know if deb is part of the Axis of Evil as some surmise. But she did sort of lay the wood to Leisure Suit Larry. In what I think is a good way.

I thought it was spot on. Well deserved. Just enough to not get him any sympathy.

As MamaM said. Well played.

MamaM said...

Just enough to not get him any sympathy.

Also just enough to make it appear as if she's standing by the commenters at Lem's while giving the Red Bird a public spank. Which falls into the grey matter when it comes to games people like to play.

Honestly, is there anyone who believes Althouse doesn't know what goes on over at Lems, or isn't aware of Meade's penchant for associating with crazy people on the internet?

MamaM said...

If she starts in on Ta-Nahisi Coates it's all over. The blogging heads, up voice, small house attraction is already too close for comfort.

Ever since I met deborah over here, she's reminded me in tone, attitude and outlook of someone I used to appreciate and admire. What I hold now is a different form of appreciation for the person or persons who write under that name.

kalmia said...

I think LSL's still smarting from being deleted into oblivion last week. It's obvious he's deliberately trolling and trying to derail. I love the way everyone's completely ignoring him in the comment threads and just carrying on having great conversations. Whatever her motives, I'm sure Deborah's post is going to get to him. He wants a knockout fight. He wants to drag people down to his ugly depths, not to be pitied.

kalmia said...

She got really personal, too--all the while pretending to be helpful and kind. At the same time, she got in a couple good kicks with her "jackass" and "tool" remarks. It really was a brilliant post in its way.

Palladian said...

I know that deborah is a real person and is not a shell account for that woman in Wisconsin or anyone else.

MamaM said...

I'll take your word on this Palladian, if you're sure the person who writes isn't related to either of that pair. Whatever the case, it appears a new game is on with a fancier, more well arranged version of cake on a reflective platter!

Since deborah is in charge of the delete button on her posts, I don't understand the need for closed comments on the most recent Meade addition.

kalmia said...

Yeah, I sort of wondered about that, too. Unless she doesn't want the bother of monitoring and deleting.

kalmia said...

About "Justified," I love that show. Don't have cable, but season two is finally on Netflix.

MamaM said...

Unless she doesn't want the bother of monitoring and deleting.

deborah's past pattern is been that of staying on top and engaging.

She's also one heck of a snow thrower.

kalmia said...

That is strange then. Maybe she just felt like whacking him with a snowball on the side of the head then quickly ducking indoors. He does have that effect on people.

MamaM said...

Maybe she just felt like whacking him with a snowball on the side of the head...

This video of 3 Reasons you do NOT want to live in Michigan, has been making the rounds. The whole thing is fun, with a good ending. But it's the first 20 seconds that makes me laugh the most and reminds me of your comment. The person bailing out of the car at .40 is fun too!

Michael Haz said...

Yep, the Mary comments are no longer there.

In another topic I saw this:

Meade reports that he stood outside, without a coat, but with his hands in his pockets, for about a minute. He says it was "painful."

Well, yeah. A man's nuts do become painful when kept un a vise. Explains his problems of late.

Cody Jarrett said...

I know what Palladian says, and I like and respect him, but I believe him to be dead wrong in this case.

Not that debbie is Annie, but debbie has her own deal and part of that is to be a little bitch all the while maintaining deniability.

But what do I know? I'm just a bitter old bastard who can't get along with anyone.

My company hasn't left yet. Ben Franklin said "fish and visitors smell after three days".

And who am I to argue with such a brilliant--if dead--man.

Evi L. Bloggerlady said...

LSL has the morals of Thomas on Downton Abbey, but he is not as smart (not that Thomas is so smart).

ndspinelli said...

The blue fist post should be titled, "Glory Days."

MamaM said...

debbie has her own deal and part of that is to be a little bitch all the while maintaining deniability.

Someone as smart, well read, and intuitive as she is, isn't playing the chocolate coated passive aggressive game without full awareness of doing so. Different than Inga who had little to no self awareness. This cake is deliberate, pointed and covered in fun. Except someone's being played. I don't enjoy the experience, but acknowledge the good times, humor and connection she brings with the game.

ndspinelli said...

MamaM is a woman whisperer. She should sell her services to clueless men. Her Zen like analytical services, of course.

Cody Jarrett said...

Once again, MamaM, I'm in awe of your wisdom.

I see someone playing games like that and think they should be beaten with a shovel. You put forth the effort to find the good and take some enjoyment from it, however much that might be.

I wish I was better at this than I am. It's difficult to be my friends.

Like Mr. Haz's new television find Lt. Joe Kenda (who's brilliant and a little scary), there's very little grey in my world. Lots of black and white. If we can still say that these days.

The Dude said...

I need to hire you both - Spinnerman for background checks, MamaM for character checks.

So far my own skills have not resulted in good results. Or something.

Cody Jarrett said...

Nickster, you're not wrong--but I'd say you're limiting MamaM.

There's much she could teach the majority of women as well. You wouldn't know about it because you've managed to find and keep such a gem, but most of the women out there loose aren't all that different than little debbie or even annie outhouse.

Maybe just not as extreme with it. If more people approached things like MamaM does the world would be a better place.

windbag said...

Wait...that's my line.

ricpic said...

I don't understand the need for closed comments on the most recent Meade addition.

Yeah, that jumped out at me too. That was a pretty strong knock on Meade by Deborah. So why deny anyone, Meade included, the opportunity to respond? Sue me, but I don't think it's playing fair to criticize someone, anyone, even LSL, even if justified, and not allow a response.

ricpic said...

Okay, I just went over there again and I see she closed comments to prevent Meade bashing. So...nevermind.

On the other hand maybe that was just misdirection on her part. The plot sickens.

ndspinelli said...

Cody, I agree. But to fundamentally change the mindset and manipulation used by an adult, male or female, is a tough job. Firstly, the person REALLY has to accept they're fucked up. then they have to REALLY want to change. Shrinks get big bucks and they bat lower than the Mendoza line. But, MamaM is someone I would hire. This format is the TOUGHEST for evaluating people. I never wanted to even do phone interviews. the body language and THOSE MOTHERFUCKING EYES, they tell you just about everything.

I found this website called TunnelBear and it allows me, for a small monthly fee, to watch Downton Abbey via the web by giving me a UK URL. So I watched Series 4 along with the Brits and even saw the season finale on Christmas.

So now I'm rewatching Season 4 and seeing what a genius Julian Fellowes is at dropping little breadcrumbs all over his scripts.

If you rewatch the whole show from the beginning, you'll see he set up a bunch of these things in the first season.

Alas, he has not resolved who the muppet-faced Canadian Major was who feigned to be the original heir, Patrick... I bet he got some pushback on that story line.

Trooper York said...

I think that guy became a gardener and moved to Wisconsin after he married a spinster.

Trooper York said...

I totally trust MamaM's analysis of the Debbie situation. She sussed out Inga right away long before I figured out what was going on.

Little Debbie likes to stir the shit and walk away without her fingerprints on it. So she can bash Meade and then say she doesn't want anyone to bash him. Hoping those of us who don't like him will bash away in other threads.

I think Nick and Michael Haz's ideas are best. Just ignore Leisure Suit Larry. Not engaging him directly is driving him crazy. He had to come to Lem to get a reaction and hope that some of it will spill over to TOP which seems to be drying up like that old lady's twat. So to not engage is to stop him in his tracks.

Doesn't mean that little Debbie is not gaming us too.

Trooper York said...

I do think it would be hilarious if everyone who has administrator roles on their posts just deleted Meade right out of hand. That would be awesome sauce.

But everyone should do what they think is best.

Summary comment: I, too, was a bit off put by the "no comments" thing Deborah used on the hobbit-thread...but then I realized how perfect it was...no responses means he can't comment either. "Summoned" and "alluded to" and no way to throw a fit, call people liars, etc. I love it. Deb was spot on....not a hot headed dick-head like me :) [That IS my name you know...]

I agree with Trooper that Haz and Nick have the ideal strategy...ignore the TOP hobbit. Anything else is like whacking a tar-baby on a hot summer day...or wrasslin' with a pig in the mud...e.g., pig loves it and you just get dirty.

And I also agree with Haz's deletion stick when the Hobbit or the Lpn show up and say boo more than once. Anyone who post a topic here should have th right to deleting spurious commentary. It is better when the deletion stands visible & attributable to the thread administrator,...instead of vanishing in to the ether like on TOP. Whooosh...deleted and invisible.

Michael Haz said...

LSL is back at Lem's posting crap on a thread Lem started. There's the problem: I can delete his comments, but Lem won't, so he keeps coming back, probably while deleting Mary's comments on TOP.

For me it's because she was an absolute stinking bitch to me and about me. She tried to do it several times with her little shit stirring way, then she went bigger.

I don't mind arguing with people, and I'm fully aware that I rub a lot of people the wrong way--but I don't act that way with anyone and I won't tolerate it.

Especially not when they're smiling at you and being "pals" to your face.

But as Trooper has said--everyone should do what they feel is best, and as much as I'd like my opinions to be shared (cuz they make so damn much sense! ;)) I know they won't.

Darcy said...

Evil Blogger Lady (a.k.a. "that woman in Wisconsin") has many odious character defects, but one of the worst is her inability to ever admit she is wrong or mistaken about anything. Her egotism is so repulsive that it far outweighs anything positive about her blog.

The difference between EBL and neo-neocon (Jean Kaufman)--a lovely, cultured, insightful woman who often posts about similar subjects--always shows up EBL's inflated view of herself and constant desire for attention.

Michael Haz is a bad influence. Bad Park Haz!

After his last comment about the Gay/TOP/Fen/Inga fandango I finally went over there and read the entire thread. I admit that was my stupid mistake and nearly caused unconsciousness...n-o-t-h-i-n-g has changed at TOP, nada, upso, zilch.

I was tempted because it is -5 F here at the moment with 25+ mph "breezes." Nothing I want to do outside... even "Dera" doggie wanted to be out there a minimal amount of time...fastest pee & poop on record I think. I understand that...I'd be hard pressed to lower my own gear in to 18 inches of snow. If this kind of weather keeps up I will acquire booties and some surgical tape to hold them on...haven't needed that since "Zoya" was alive...no amount of cold and snow discouraged her.

I did learn something, gained something, from the read experience...and that is that "Darcy" is right...I will not mention TOP again. It causes PTSD.

Michael Haz said...

Sorry Ari! Yep, Bad Park Me.

Here's the thing: It's like watching an accident that you know will happen. You know it will be awful, but you can't stop watching it set up and then happen.

I go to TOP now and again just to look for the train wrecks, and sometimes I mention them thinking that they might provide a perverse sense of amusement for others. Your mileage may vary, of course.

I'll back off of that now so as not to cause consternation among the good people here at Trooper's blog.

El Pollo,
So glad you asked. At the end of Series 3, Rose came to visit Great Aunt Violet. She is the daughter of the Marquess and Marchioness of Flintshire, who own Dunegle Castle in Scotland. The Marquess is known to all his family as "Shrimpie" and he was instrumental in getting poor William back to Downton so he could marry Daisy and die during the war.

Anyway, Rose went to London with Edith and scampered off with Terrence, a married man, to a jazz club. Matthew 'rescued' her from the cad AND the Ladies Rosamund and Edith. She was returned to Downton and allowed to watch the cricket match but was then sent off to exile in Scotland with an elderly relative or [Aunt Agatha who has never been mentioned since]. At last Christmas's episode "A Journey to the Highlands" it became obvious that the Flintshires didn't get along with each other and Rose especially fought with her mother Lady Susan. Lord Flintshire was to serve His Majesty in India and of course Lady Flintshire had to accompany him [also side story of how the ladies' maid, O'Brien, got to go along on that great adventure]. Rose had not yet been presented in society and she would find few prospects in India. It was decided that she would stay at the Crawley's until her parents returned. Lady Grantham will indeed present her to the King and Queen at the final episode this season. They show the whole shooting match....so much more gratifying than the return from London when Lady Sybill was presented before the war and it was mentioned as she went upstairs. You see the whole London season in an episode. And Shirley MacLaine returns bringing her son [Cora's brother] Harold. Played by Paul Giamatti.

It's a splendid episode and a solid season. I miss Matthew, but Lord Fellowes has put some interesting threads into the tapestry this season.

Ari - I don't think I have ever mentioned how much I admire your ability to work with and train dogs. I am in awe.

It's warming up a bit here now - plenty of sunshine, so it has gone from 12 degrees this morning to 23 now. My dogs are content to lie in the sun next to me here in the "great" room. It's really just a bit above average, but I like it.

I love my dogs, but not like Mr. Shall Not Be Named, if you take my drift. I have arranged my life so that I can actually own my own dog. I don't have a mommy that is jealous of other bitches, or something.

I have a lot of work to do inside the house today but maybe we will get out for walkies later. They really like getting out and checking out what has happened in the neighborhood since our last walk. Mmm - deer! Hey, new dog! Kitteh!!!

Yeah, I try to train my dogs but my knowledge of how to train them and how they learn is very limited. Maybe I will advance my knowledge as time goes by. In my spare time.

Yes, it is all of that. I usually look only briefly when someone mentions the place. Not your fault I was the idiot who decided to read the entire post & commentary.

It resonates with me that the TOP hostess and her hobbit are who I once supported, defended, and argued over with some good people. I was so damn wrong it hurts....e.g., the reason for my PTSD remark.

Ari - I don't think I have ever mentioned how much I admire your ability to work with and train dogs. I am in awe.

What I know is dwarfed by what I don't know I assure you. What I do know I learned from some very good people, with both horses and dogs. My orientation has always been on the positive reinforcement side ever since my early youth. Long ago it was considered silly...today it is literally taught to anyone who wants to learn.

A great deal of "training" is in connecting what the animal thinks is "fun", or instinctive, with behavior you want from it. Horse or dog.

One of the best teachers anywhere is Ivan Balabanov . Anyone can read what he has written and use the ideas as far up the ladder of performance as they wish to go.

The Dude said...

Thanks for the lead, Ari. I have a Border Collie mix who thinks it is fun to run circles around me when I am putting her food out. She invented the game, no doubt it is hard wired into her herding genes, but some have suggested that it is wrong for me to allow my dog to herd me, Mr. Alpha.

Who knows - all I know is that she looks forward to feeding time and will run 6 or 7 laps around me as I walk with her food. Perhaps that is her job here - to make sure Pappy gets the food delivered to the right place. She seems to enjoy it, I sure don't mind and so far she has not shown any signs of needing a bunch of goats or sheep out back to round up.

Dust Bunny Queen said...

@ Ruth Anne

Thanks so much for the recap. We are going to watch the show tonight on DVR. I'm sure without your summary we would be all...Wut? Who? When? Hurrr durrr.

Aridog said...

Sixty Grit ... in a Border Collie you have one of the most high energy intelligent dogs out there. Dog "culture" is frequently misunderstood by well meaning people. I assure you that the play circling you experience has nothing to do with anyone's "alpha" status...it is play. High energy dogs need to play to release some of that explosive energy. I cited Ivan Balabanov because he deals with another ultra high energy dog, the Malinois, most of the time and is a foremost breeder and trainer.

In a wolf pack the "omega" is of the lowest rank, but invariably he/she is also the instigator of most of the play within the pack.

The Dude said...

Thanks again, Ari - I will read that when I get a chance.

Play is how I view my dog's behavior - she loves it, I like it, we have fun. She likes me to throw a stick for her, too. She is even getting to the point that she has learned that if she drops it we get to play again.

I think Cesar might be okay for what he does, but his methods to not apply universally across all breeds. Trying to "dominate" a BC is silly and pointless. Better to find something fun to do.

Plus, it just seems kinder. I do not want to be mean to my dogs, don't like to see others be mean to their dogs. Oh, the stories I could tell, but I won't.

Oh, and there is a Malinois that shows up at market sometimes - beautiful animal. Their intelligence just shines out of them.

Okay, I am off in story land now, but sometimes I see Border Collies who wound up with not-so-bright owners - I was one of those when my dog first arrived, but I took it upon myself to learn what little I know. A smart dog can overmatch a human pretty darned quick.

DBQ: You're very welcome. I love talking DA.

Another recommendation for folks who love costume drama: "Call the Midwife" set in the East End of London in the late 1950s. About 4 young nurses who delivery babies in the impoverished/working class neighborhood along with C of E nuns. And they live in the convent and ride all over town on their bicycles.

ndspinelli said...

We're currently babysitting our son's border collie mix while he's visiting family in Boston. This dog was abused and rescued. They took Zoe in when she started getting hinky around a family members 1 year old kid. As soon as the kid started going mobile Zoe got aggressive. This 9 year old dog w/ arthritis wants to go outside in -15 degrees to chase a stick. Smart as hell, but going out in that weather isn't very indicative of intelligence.

ndspinelli said...

Sixty, This dog has trained me in just a couple days. When it's time to walk, eat, shit, piss, she lets me know, as my son said she would. She was obese when they got her and have knocked off some weight, but still too heavy.

Never have I understood people who love dogs feed them to death. Dog food is the only foot our dogs got. Never overweight, lived long, active lives.

Costume drama. Good term. I knit and there are several books out already on knitting the fashions in Downton Abby. Also a book on Jane Austin knits. I haven't looked but I would imagine there are patterns and books out there for the sewn costumes as well.

Retro clothing. I really admire the workmanship and detail that went into clothing in the "olden days". Unlike today where we are basically wearing unstructured sacks.

Sort of like the Green Bay Packers season.

Ruth Anne Adams said...

DBQ: There's a documentary all about the Costume Drama. I thought it was good.

Also another recommendation that was a mini-series of three whole episodes. Trooper might even like it. It's called "The Bletchley Circle" about 4 women WWII code crackers several years after the war who use their considerable skills to track down a serial killer.

Trooper York said...

What? Too soon?

Ruth Anne Adams said...

Oh crap. Those links were bad. Both went to Amazon to show "The Costume Drama" and "The Bletchley Circle". Both available on Amazon or Amazon Prime.

I want to very strongly recommend two series.

One is on Showtime starring of all people Joey from Friends Matt
LeBlanc. It is called "Episodes" and it is very funny. Really gives you some insight into TV people.

The other one I have mentioned before. It is called "The Fall" and it stars Gillian Anderson of the X-files as a police superintendent in Belfast, Northern Island. A superb drama. I mention it because season two will be coming out soon.

Trooper York said...

What is also interesting about "Episodes" is that it was filmed in England when it was about Hollywood.

I would love to have Fen post here. Maybe I can send him a email.

I'll bet the arboreality was all wrong then which is reason enough to dislike a show according to some.

I couldn't believe that the Malibu "beachhouse" that they used as Matt LeBlanc's home was actually in England. It was crazy.

I KNOW! Some people, am I right?

Am I the only one who noticed the London cross walk stripes in Eyes Wide Shut? Kubrick worked in England and I guess he thought no one could tell the difference between London and New York. Then he died.

chickelit said...

Thanks for that recap, Ruth Anne. Are you and vbspurs live-tweeting it?

My crack about "arboreality" was directed at Sixty who can't stand "Justified" because some deciduous species were misrepresented.

Trooper York said...

Well we all have our areas of interest.

Sixty pays attention to the trees and vegetation.

I look at the tits. Real or fake?

To each his own.

The main problem with Downton Abbey is that none of the woman have big knockers.

Couldn't the chauffer guy hook up with some blowsy tavern wench or something.

Trooper York said...

I can't wait for "Justified" tonight.

It looks like they are going back to Dewey Crowe and his fucked up family. Should be lots of fun.

The Dude said...

Trees, hills, hollows, accents, teeth - all wrong.

Look at me, I am Raylan, I am driving on I5, now I am turning on to a driveway lined with eucalyptus trees - oh, looks there's my hill-dwelling kin folk with bleached white teeth! Standing by a pepper tree, which is next to a live oak.

Yeah, it's my fault that after a lifetime of looking at trees I can tell one from another.

Kubrick was right. A London plane tree makes me sycamore, or less.

Now go watch Breaking Bad and tell me the make-believe chemistry is not grating. It grates on me and I can't tell my beaker from an Erlenmeyer.

I actually thought that too once but...Mary is still my favorite. It's her mind.

Sixty once gave us a great tutorial on Christina Hendricks. Amirite?

"Dewey Crowe" - great character, great actor. So is the bleached teeth hillbilly, Boyd (Goggins).

The Dude said...

I did. Not everyone remembers as well as The Chicken King.

That used to bug the shit out Titus.

Oops-that didn't sound right somehow.

I too like "Sherlock" and "Call The Midwife" as well as that show about the modern Ripper and also the one about the cop in wartime southern England which DBQ recommended. I'm an anglophile and a francophobe.

I've never seen the "Bletchley Circle."

Sort of like the Green Bay Packers season.

Says the man obsessed with the Packers.

Well, who wouldn't be if the only other choices were the Jets and the Giants. Another reason to leave New York.

The Dude said...

Yeah, because Florida teams ROCK!

Another good show is "Longmire" about a sheriff trying to put his life back together. Season 2 is now on Netflix.

Is that "Foyle's War?" I really loved it. Six wonderful seasons on Netflix.

chickelit said...

Yes, "Foyle's War." I didn't realize there were 6 seasons. We stopped watching a year or so ago. Will have to check the NetFlix history.

I've watched a couple of episodes of BBC's "Dark Mirror." Both were excellent.

We've enjoyed Justified and Downton Abbey due to recommendations received here. We've also got a bottle of Rebel Yell in the cupboard now, courtesy of SonM and a bourbon thread by MHaz over at Lem's. We've been needing some new shows to put on the watch list, so I'm glad the thread went this direction.

The comment below goes back to something mentioned earlier in the thread. I thought about putting it on the Cloud Cukoo post, so it wouldn't disrupt the movie/tv momentum, but it was formed around something Aridog said and seems to fit better here.

I was so damn wrong it hurts....

Up until the "J" incident, I was a supporter of Althouse and Meade, vocal in my affirmation of their strengths and appreciative of the community and commentary provided by the Althouse blog.

I don't know that I was wrong in my assessment of the attributes and character they both revealed at that time. Most people aren't all good or all bad and there's no shame in finding value in what is good and present. I liked Ann's eye for composition and Meade's ability to turn a phrase, along with the ability they both showed to provoke a response (a strength and a weakness) for what seemed like greater good.

It's my belief humans will function within a relationship to the place of their deepest hurt, at which point they either accept the painful invitation to walk honestly through the emerging issues or resort to deploying a protective shield of dysfunctional behaviors (denial, distortions, and disconnect) around the hurt part to keep themselves safe. While the first choice mentioned strengthens integrity, the other compromises it.

When neither Ann nor Meade appeared willing to own their part of the Comment Shutdown and subsequent remarks made at Lem's, I adjusted my opinion about them and their integrity along with the amount of trust I was willing to offer.

Disliking a person, disliking a person's behavior, and hating someone are three very different responses. Unpleasant and wrongheaded as some of Althouse/Meade behavior has been, I don't hate them for it. Neither do I hate Titus, Inga or the person who comments as the charmingly delightful deborah. I do, however, intensely dislike being on the receiving end of manipulations, lies and game playing with the intent to fool another into believing something to be true or real when it is not.

Growth and health depend on one's ability to hold opinions, change opinions, make observations, leave room for error, state one's beliefs, and reform one's beliefs based on new information. Unfortunately, trauma shuts down and short circuits that form of processing by sending the body into the physical fight, flight or freeze mode needed for survival.
Betrayal of trust is a form of trauma.

The key difference between traditional post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and betrayal trauma is that the former is historically seen as being caused primarily by fear, whereas betrayal trauma is a response to extreme anger. Fear and anger are the two sides to the fight-or-flight response, and as such are our strongest and most basic psychological emotions.

I don't like what went down at Althouse in July. I don't like what happened at Lem's in the aftermath. Without resorting to anymore pictures of Little Debbie Cake piles, which is my distorted way of dealing with fear and anger, the truth is, I'm wary of deborah and Meade's behavior over at TOOP. Whatever's involved remains to be seen. In the meantime, I very much appreciate the affirmations and awareness shared earlier in the thread regarding discernment. They warmed my heart.

That is so beautifully put, MamaM. I'm saving that quote.

Due to this great thread and discussion we have added several shows to our line up.

We watched the first episode of Bletchley Circle. It was very good. Waiting with bated breath for the next series of Sherlock and also House of Cards on Netflix. We missed the last season of Justified so we will need to buy each episode before starting on this newest one.

Since cutting off most of our Dish programing and adding a Roku box, streaming most of our entertainment through the internet, not only has the quality of our viewing gone up, so has the convenience of being able to watch what we want WHEN we want. [It make come as a shock to youse guys, but Dumbplumber and I don't watch sports so all those ESPN channels were a giant waste of money.]

We just discovered that we can subscribe through the Roku to our local PBS station and have a ton of really great shows to watch. Including Downton Abby. Yay. I like NOVA and the other documentaries.

I will now search for Dark Mirror as an addition to the line up.

MammaM, as always has great perspective.
