I hate the Cardinals!

And the Cardinal I hated the most was the fuckin Bob Gibson. That fuck was just too good a pitcher. Mean as hell. He dominated the mound so much in 1968 that they had to change the rules. That's when men were men and they weren't afraid to throw inside. I don't know how Saint Joe Torre could play so long with this mook and not let the Yankees throw inside when our guys were getting beaned every game.

But Gibby's incredible dominance had one positive result.

The Designated Hitter.

The only way to stand a chance against Gibson was to slow him down. Once he got into that quick delivery rhythm he was practically unbeatable. So I always wondered why opposing teams' hitters didn't step out of the batter's box between every pitch. Every. Single. Pitch. Nothing against doing that in the rulebook as far as I know. Well, too late now.

The reason why is because after about the third time you stepped out he would hit you right in the coconut.

That is when you get all slap stick and the team charges the mound and gets a few well aimed punches on Gibson before the umpires can stop them.

Exactly, Fred. Returning Gibson's aggression in spades (spades?!) was the only way to stand a chance against the Sal Maglie clone.

Well that doesn't happen anymore because the league is full of Mike Piazza's.

Not that theres anything wrong with that.

Ah, the 1968 World Series, when men were men indeed. What a cast of characters. Gibson, McCarver, Flood, McClain, Kaline and Lolich. Lolich was the greatest pitcher New Yawkers have never heard of. He pitched 3 complete game victories in the '68 series and beat Gibson in game 7 on 2 freakin' days rest. 376 innings pitched and 308 strikeouts in 1971. Plus, he had a bigger gut than Trooper.

By the way, the kid that dispatched Kadaffy was wearing a Yankees hat at the time. Read into it what you will.

Trooper, I wasn't aware you hated Torre. Did he cut you off in traffic?
