Bangkok satay!

I was with a friend who was sampling satay cockroaches in Bangkok (they were big cockroaches). He liked them. Until he asked how the guy grilling them caught them--he thought the guy was saying some Thai word he was unfamilar with, until he realized the guy was telling him that he sprayed the roaches with Baygon to catch them.

Baygon products contain the pyrethroids cyfluthrin and transfluthrin, and the carbamate propoxur and organophosphorus chlorpyrifos, as active ingredients. Pyrethroids can lead to a variety of ill effects if ingested in sufficient quantities, including tremors, dyspnea, and paralysis.

Pyrethroids are deadly nerve toxins for many insects. The natural product, pyrethrin, occurs in the seeds of chrysanthemum flowers. It's a big cash crop for Kenya.

Pyrethroids are like designer versions of pyrethrin. I'm waiting for the lefty world firsters to ban them in favor of empowering Kenyan "organic" flower power.

We went out for Thai food last night and as always happens the owner Amy came to sit with us and have a glass of wine.

She told us she was flying back to Thailand because the floods have forced the government to evacuate Bangkok because of the fighting about the flood that is coming because the dams are overflowing.

Of course my wife can not hear and she doesn't understand her thick accent so she asked me "Why is th omlet coming because the people are farting."

I didn't have a good explaination for that sad to say.

I think my response would have been to burst out laughing but it might have offended the owner. Sometimes it is better just to let translation faux pas like that just pass unnoticed.
