Fort Apache

Fort Apache is a work of genius by John Ford in which he reimagines the Custer myth.

Henry Fonda plays Owen Thursday who is the Custer figure. Here he is seen as the arrogant prissy leader who will eventually lead his men to slaughter. The subtext of the corruption of the Indian agents who were part and parcel of the Grant administration is often used as a justification for Custer’s actions. Many touches illustrate Fords knowledge of the subject matter. The use of a Spanish Sgt (the great Pedro Armendáriz) as the main aide to Captain Yorke (John Wayne) was illustrative of the heavy Hispanic influence of the southwest at that time.

Ford changed the venue from the plains to the desert and replaced the Sioux with the Apache. But the result was the same. A glorious charge that ended in decimation and death.

The Duke played the conscience of the Army, someone who knew the score and respected his opponents even though he had to do the dirty job that his political masters requires. Thursday wanted the glory. York wanted to get the job done to save his men and as many of the Apache as he could.

Captain Yorke summed it up best in the last few words of the movie:
Collingwood and the rest. And they'll keep on living as long as the regiment lives. The pay is thirteen dollars a month; their diet: beans and hay. Maybe horsemeat before this campaign is over. Fight over cards or rotgut whiskey, but share the last drop in their canteens. The faces may change... the names... but they're there: they're the regiment... the regular army... now and fifty years from now. They're better men than they used to be. Thursday did that. He made it a command to be proud of.

This blog is custard.

You forgot to mention that Shirley Temple played Fonda's daughter, and her future first husband played her love interest.

Isn't it stupid that I complain about something that so enhances my blog and makes it so much better.

Jeeez I might as well be a super villain.

I remember being distinctly less impressed by Fort Apache: The Bronx.

What a great movie.

Thursday: Trouble you for your sabre, Captain.

Yorke: My sabre?

Thursday: I must rejoin my command.

Yorke: The command is wiped out, sir, and there's nothing we can do about it.

Thursday: I'm not asking your opinion, Capt. Yorke. When you command this regiment - and you probably will - command it! Your sabre, sir.

Thursday: Any questions, Captain?

Yorke: No questions.

Trooper, I spent tonight watching Fort Apache again.

Maybe it is just because tomorrow is Father's day, but I noticed how much the movie is also about Fathers and Sons.

Ward Bond's reaction, when his son, who has been gone 4 years, walks into the room; Thursday and Collingswood- who must have had some type of mentor relatonship, before it apparently went bad; Mulcahy and Lt. O'Rourke as God Father and Godson.

And- RCOcean; I have read some of your blog; great stuff!

I also read the comments of Dana Andrews on John Wayne.

Remind me again: Who the hell is Dana Andrews?

Dana Andrews was a leading man in the '40s, starring in Laura, e.g., and immortalized for his performance in the '50s Day of the Demon.

Dana Andrews said prunes,
Gave him the runes,
And passing them used lots of skill.

But When Worlds Collide,
Said George Pal to his bride,
I'm gonna give you such a terrible thrill.

I believe Burt Lancaster was visiting him in the nursing home (he had Alzheimer's), and Lancaster had a stroke on the spot.

It was Leslie Neilsen of Naked Gun fame and, of course, Anne Francis stars in Forbidden Planet. Dana Andrews was the central character in Best Years of our Lives about men coming home from WWII.

I sort of prefer She wore a Yellow Ribbon--Fonda is such an asshole, and it's in color.
