The belly to belly summit

It's pretty funny when you meet someone in person because they often are totally different than what you expected. When Nick Spinelli walked in I was expecting Lou Costello but he had more of a Sean Connery vibe. Nick and his lovely wife Leslyn joined us for dinner at Marco Polo.

We met at the store and we showed our sizzle reel so they could get an idea of the show we wanted to do instead of what we ended up doing. Then we closed up the store and walked across the street to Marco Polo.

We hadn't been back since our vacation so everybody in the joint had to come over and say hello at one time or another during the night.

We stated with cocktails before dinner as we perused the menu. I did what I normally do which is order off the menu. We ordered a mixed platter of meats and cheeses. Soppressata, prosciutto and speck with grana panda, ricotta salada and provolone. Figs, olives, walnuts and honey.

Then we did a mixed hot appetizer. Mozzarella en carozza , eggplant rollatini and stuffed mushrooms.

Of course we switched to wine and enjoyed a nice Malbac with went down very smoothly with all of the food. The girls enjoyed the wine. It made everything nice and blurry.  Heh.

I like to order the appetizers because I want what I want so we can go off the menu. But everyone picked their own main courses.  I recommended the wine fettuccine made in the cheese wheel and Leslyn decided to give that a shot. They do a big presentation where the cook the pasta on a little cart. They shave cheese out of the giant cheese wheel making a bunch of shredded pieces. Then they put the cooked pasta in the wheel and mush it around until it as cheesy as Wisconsin on a summer day. I told our favorite waiter Jay to not let me down and do it right. I think he did a good job.
Now the veal chop is very tasty but Lisa loves it parmigiana style with sauce and mozzarella. Nick opted to try it as he said he had not had veal for a while. Both dishes came out and just looked delicious.

I went for the tried and true cavatelli with the hot spicy sausages and roasted tomato. Good stuff.

We sat and talked and laughed and told stories as people came and went. We closed the joint. Off course we went off to the bar for a nightcap and to say hello to Tony the Bartender who was back from his vacation in Brazil.  We said goodbye in the cold air outside because somehow the weather had turned a little chilly.

Nick and Lesyln were back on the road the next day and Lisa and I were back in the store.

The belly to belly summit was a great success. We missed youse guys. Hopefully someday we can all get together and share some veal parmigiana.

"When Nick Spinelli walked in I was expecting Lou Costello but he had more of a Sean Connery vibe" sounds like a compliment until you realize that he thought the same about Meade.

This is just so nice to read. I'm smiling.

And holy crap, El Pollo. That one was a doozy. My comments are goofy without context! But that ain't happenin'.

That said, I can see the Connery vibe from Nick and in a good way.

Wow, even the veal looks good (I am ashamed to admit).

You guys did have The Big Night!

Looks great. Glad the meeting was a success.

OH, East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet,
Till Earth and Sky stand presently at God’s great Judgment Seat;
But there is neither East nor West, Border, nor Breed, nor Birth,
When two strong men stand face to face, tho’ they come from the ends of the earth!

Did Louis Prima show? How about i secondi, or or Louis Terzo?

Actually, substitute "old overweight guys" for "strong" and its still somewhat applicable.

Lots of veal comes from Wisconsin because if you're born bovine and you ain't got working udders, you're another mouth to feed and you might as well feed mouths instead.

Who paid?

Who tipped?

Fifty/fifty's best of course, but usually it becomes a contest. At least in my experience.

What a great story. And what a wonderful evening between new/old friends.

I'm re-thinking the wisdom of hitting the click-through to the Connery photo, although reading how my blog friends were a short number of years back is heart warming.

Nick was nice enough to pick up the tab and I left the tip.

He is a gentleman and a scholar.

I was busy all day visiting w/ good friends in Rockaway, NJ. We had a reunion w/ some of my old college friends last night. One guy had moved to Charlotte years back and returned to north Jersey. The other guys I have seen almost yearly. We ate some great food on Saturday night. Today we took a tour of some Soprano's spots. We went to the Mercedes dealership where Gloria Trillo worked. We stopped @ the gas station where Phil Leotardo was clipped and drove by diner where the show ended so abruptly. I will put my bride on a flight from Newark tomorrow and then head to PNC Park to put another MLB ballpark on my list.

The Dolan's are folks you want to know. We talked about the shop, show, youse guys, 9/11, Leslyn's book, food, drink and life. The food and drink were the best we had on our trip, and we had some great meals. But, the meeting of great people tops any food. And, for an Eyetalian, that's one of the few things that top food! Marco Polo is everything Trooper raves about. Trooper is like Tony in Vesuvio only thankfully, the young and quite handsome Marco, who had just returned from Italy, is the antithesis of Artie Bucco. Marco is quiet, classy, and handsome w/ a full head of hair.

A meeting of this group of vagabonds is the next step. It will be difficult for some folks. It won't be the cup o' tea for some. To each their own. I assure you, meeting our bartender and his wife will not disappoint.

Troop, you need to get Eli Manning in MP and go over him defeating himself.

The next step...

Taking nothing for granted, Ms.S returns home with her memories of the dinner and characters involved and Trooperizes the event in her next book!

You'd be a talented literary agent, MamaM.

These are great pics of two guys who enjoy life. Downright Falstaffian.

From now on, will the E. in E.Y. Spinelli stand for "especially"?

What a table of four! What a momentous meeting! What splendid company! Makes me happy to imagine it & vicariously enjoy it.

Of course the Yid wants to know who paid! It was Yom Kippur, ricpic. We obviously ate and drank..heavily. I know I didn't have marital relations so that rule was not broken. Both of the lovely women wore fragrances. I actually commented on Lisa's lovely perfume. Trooper wore leather shoes. I just had on my usual leather briefs. I paid for my sins in the morning, however there was no atonement.

Chip, Trust me, the 'E' will continue to be "Even" You. You can bet on that. My cocktail was Maker's neat. Trooper had a dirty Martini, Lisa a Cosmo, my bride stuck w/ wine before dinner. After dinner Trooper had a Brazilian drink that he can explain. Lisa went back to Cosmo. My bride had a strawberry gimlet. I has limoncello. I had just met w/ my cousins the day before. My cousin Jane married an Eyetlian immigrant. He still has a house in Calabria. They had just returned from a family wedding in Sorrento. Jane brought home some limoncello for me. I fell in love w/ the drink when we were in Sorrento.

MamaM, Golden's are my favorite.

yashu, I also am one who gets vicarious pleasure from others. It is a good quality.

MamaM, The next book is written. It will be sent to Sixty soon for his expert proofreading. We not only trust his skills, but his confidentiality.

ndspinelli said...

chick, Louis DePalma showed in a limoncello way.

ndspinelli said...

Darcy, Thanks. Trooper is not the first to make that comparison. I only see the baldness comparison.

ndspinelli said...

rcocean, We put on a few pounds that evening. We had dessert, also. I had gelato but forget what everyone else had. I'm ashamed.

ndspinelli said...

Evi, Not an ounce of guilt eating veal!!! But, I do hope it wasn't your son.

The Dude said...

I am looking forward to helping any way I can, Nick. With you and Troopski standing watch you know that my confidentiality is assured.

What book - I ain't got no book. I ain't read no book! Naw, you're thinkin' of someone else...

The genius of the Catholic Church is that atonement is doled out in a once a week confession (or more frequently or less frequently depending on the state of the penitent's soul) rather than in one monster Day Of Atonement per year.

ricpic--

Well, Lent is 40 days.

Jon Stewart, back when he was a comedian, did a bit about how, even with sins, goyim pay retail.

Sounds like a blast. Man, it's too bad none of you guys or anyone on this blog couldn't do a meet-up in San Diego. Great weather, great vibe, great food too. Someday I guess if the stars align.

Methadras, I second your San Diego venue, asking it be sometime Jan-April. But I'll go anywhere.
