Johnny Cash covering Tom Petty's Won't Back Down is considered one of the top two covers Cash recorded late in his life. The other is his incomparable cover of Nine Inch Nails Hurt, recorded when Cash knew he he was near death.

Nine Inch Nails Trent Reznor said that no one will ever sing his along as we'll as Cash did.

Hey Trooper, yeah, don't stand down against the force of evil.

I'd microwave a massive amount of popcorn to watch Troop in full battle array against the FoE, but as much as I'd enjoy it, I've gotta ask...what's in it for Troop, besides lots of agita?

Would it be cathartic, or would it double your blood pressure?

Cash's American Recordings IV was spooky. His death soon after, coupled with the themes of that CD--mortality, the permanence of relationships, human frailty--was tragic, yet fitting. Almost as if he knew that was it. The man made you feel his emotion.

I agree with you Chip. A lot of what was said last night pissed me off royally but I bet my tongue. What's the point. If people don't realize that Meade is a miserable grifter and his wife a constipated bilious Garden Gnome it is not my job to set them straight.

Trooper York said...

You have to pick your fights.

Trooper York said...

That is bit my tongue.

I bet my tongue in a strip club in 1986 and I will never do that again.

Chip S. said...

That was Michael Douglas's big mistake.

Trooper, You were so restrained[I read it all this morning] I thought you were sedated.

ndspinelli said...

But, I think we've all been restrained to give our respect to Lem. The bonus is, w/ us focusing our vitriol where it belongs, and not on each other, it frosts The House of Narcissus asses. Bonus!

ndspinelli said...

I liked Johnny singing Solitary Man. It led off the flick, Solitary Man, starring the aforementioned Michael Douglas.

Trooper York said...

Fighting over at Lem's place is like pissing on a puppy. He looks at you with those sad eyes and you feel like a heel.

ndspinelli said...

I thought puppies loved golden showers.

Our pal Inga made an appearance and sent a shout out to Meth. Trying to stir the shit. She won't be able to contain herself very long. I would be very curious to see if she makes the cut at TOP.

That will tell you all you need to know right there.

rcocean said...

Glad you were restrained. BTW, how's your leg doing? I remember a cane.

IGNORE HER. Do not respond. That is what she wants.

Geeze didn't any of you guys ever have a 3 year old throwing tantrums to get their way. If you give in....you have give up your superior position. IGNORE.

Trooper York said...

Oh I am ignoring her DBQ.

I just think that it is instructive that Inga will be a valued contributor but you are banned.

It just makes me laugh.

Trooper York said...

You know that Inga and Meade will not be able to resist being stupid.

Haters gotta hate.

Trooper York said...

Oh and you know what I do with a three old who had a tantrum. I have two words for that.

Corporal punishment.

Trooper York said...

My leg is a lot better rc. I had an operation to close off my veins and it has worked out pretty well so far.

I just have to watch my salt which sucks but I can't afford the swelling.

Evi L. Bloggerlady said...

It is not my job to convince Freeman Hunt, Paddy O, or Lem they are stupid. They are stupid. How you can buy into this Althouse BS after what has gone on is beyond me. But they have the right to be what they are.

But it is better to forget about Althouse and Meade. Because being ignored is something that will drive Ann insane. And she deserves a long slow decline to irrelevancy.

Among the fabulous beings of Greek mythology was Proteus, the "Old man of the Sea," whose duty was to guard the herd of seals that belonged to Poseidon. Each day at noon Proteus would emerge from the watery depths to rest upon the rocks, while the herd of seals gathered around him. Now was the time when an enterprising person could learn from him, for Proteus had the gift of looking into the future and spoke only the truth. There was a problem, however: Proteus was a shape shifter. He could assume any shape he desired: lion, dragon, water, fire, tree...And when asked a question, instead of answering, Proteus would change shape. This was enough to frighten and discourage most people, but if you persisted, and especially if you hung on to Proteus resolutely no matter what shape he assumed, eventually he would be forced to assume his human form and give you the answer to your question.

When people say something but you are not quite sure what they are saying, when they are confronted by a certain issue but manage to change the conversation to a different issue, when they leave us confused amidst a cloud of innuendo--then they are playing Proteus. It is enough to confuse and intimidate the bravest among us--unless we realize what is going on, screw our courage to the sticking-place (as Shakespeare would say) and hang on.

People tend to turn Proteus on us under two conditions: first, when we are trying to communicate with them about a matter that is disconcerting or painful to them; second, when they want to tell us something and do not want to take responsibility for it.

Proteus succeeds because we do not see what is going on.

--from J. Sanford, Between People

I grew up with a shape-shifter. The one in my home rarely spoke the truth, and when she did, it would still come out sounding like something else. As a result I'm wary of those who are willing to change their stories, their names and their avatars while refusing to offer direct responses or engage in honest communication.

Originally from Macbeth, the phrase, "Screw your courage to the sticking place!" was used by Disney in The Beauty and the Beast, showing up in The Mob Song, sung by Gaston.

I always liked Lem, Freeman, Paddy O, Palladian, etc. So I do not want it to sound like I am coming down hard on them. I am not. Nor are they stupid in intelligence. They are, if anything, too trusting. They are "stupid" in they seem to lack the ability to see what POS Althouse and Meade are. It is almost color blindness, why are we so mean to Ann and Meade?

It is almost amusing, but mostly annoying.

Trooper York said...

Well here's the thing. Pastafarian is the only street smart enough to understand what is going on. But like you said Evi it is not our job to educate them.

Meade is grooming them as a true grifter will and has carefully removed any disagreement from his happy little world. It was instructive how he played his way into Althouse's life and managed to direct it. If you saw the video you saw the living proof of what a grifter does.

I am more friendly with some of the co-bloggers than others and one in particular I find insufferable. So I don't want to engage. I will throw up a post now and then and five Lem some nice content. But I don't want to engage in a major way anymore. When you start putting conditions on you commenting you losing the reason why you did it in the first place.

Chip S. said...

Yesterday rhhardin made what I think is one of the best comments ever:

Notice that you can say anything you want here. There's a feeling that goes with that.

Freedom is a beautiful thing.

Thanks for this forum, Trooper.

Trooper York said...

You are welcome Chip.

You add a lot as does everyone who posts here.

Now don't make get all mushy.

It is too hot and I am already mushy.

Trooper York said...

Meade is at it again right at the thread where Lem asked everyone to stop bashing Althouse.

It boggles the mind. It boggles the mind.

Trooper York said...

I want to say congratulations to Ritmo who is carrying the flag in his own inimitable style.

Good show old boy. Good show.

Chip S. said...

Ritmo is pummeling Meade w/ some phenomenal combinations:

jab/right uppercut/left hook/right hand

SPLAT!

Down goes Meade!

The Dude said...

Meade is too stupid to notice that he has been outsmarted.

Wait, what?

MamaM said...

Oh my, and LOL, the elephant in the room is shape shifting so fast its about to turn into a whirling dervish

Chip S. said...

"Shape shifter" was perfect, MamaM.

Ritmo held tight and the shifter ran out of shapes.

TTBurnett said...

Wow. I wish Ritmo were that concise all the time. As an essentially wimpy person, the best I could do with that crew was throw pies in their faces. Ritmo's got the hammer and tongs out.

TTBurnett said...

And by the time I threw the pies, the faces weren't there. Ritmo's got hooks into him.

yashu said...

I must say, those two long comments Ritmo wrote (before M called him "insane" and the pummelling began) were impressive.

Don't think I've ever read anything by him before that evinced so much understanding, empathy, and goodwill not only toward A & M, but also his fellow commenters at TOP.

Those actually were very kind comments, kind to all parties (including his usual antagonists), perceptive and carefully written. And as DBQ rightly said, perfectly understandable.

rcocean said...

"I had an operation to close off my veins and it has worked out pretty well so far."

Good to hear. Hope you kept the cane and have a monocle and top hat in reserve.

Trooper York said...

I agree yashu. That is the Ritmo I know and have told everyone about but was not believed.

And of course that was the Meade I know who answered.

Just a dick. Pure and simple.

TTBurnett said...

Agreed, yashu and Trooper. Amazing performance.

blake said...

I didn't read it, but I know Ritmo's a smart dude. And a cool dude, politics aside.

Frederick William I of Prussia (1688-1740) was Frederick the Great's father. To say the elder king was an autocrat is a weak understatement. Everything in his small kingdom was run as a tight ship. He was also one who was not above taking things into his own hands.

One day, some guy walking in the street failed either to doff his hat or bow deeply enough to the passing Royal entourage. Fredrick William, enraged, lept from his carriage, grabbed the offender, and began beating him with his cane, shouting, "Love me, you scum!"
