Drudge Report: VP candidate dipped his quill into inkwell
Drudge Report ( August 25, 2012) It was reported by various sources that Congressman Paul Ryan had an African American girlfriend while he was in college. Unlike President Obama's purported girlfriends she was neither a composite or a dude. What effect on the claims that Congressman Ryan is a racist is yet to be seen.
We were unable to locate the young lady and her father only would offer us a Jello Pudding Pop.

Will the left paint Ryan like Jefferson or Spermin' Thurmond?
More like Glenn Rice.
Heh. I forgot about that one. That was even after the election.
Althouse thinks Baron Zemo is Trooper
?!
Althouse thinks Baron Zemo is Trooper
?!
Heee! Again!!! This is so much FUN. But... *scratches head* Why would anyone here care what Althouse thinks???
Mama, one must only speak for themselves, isn't that what you were telling me, not so long ago? How could you forget our own admonition?!
Perhaps "our" Troopie would like to know.
YOUR
Your admonition, OUR Troopie.
I have to go with MamaM on this one.
I am not too worried about what the original EBl thinks about anything.
Same drivel, different day. Outhouse is a pathetically stupid individual.
As for diets, I am on the Chet Atkins diet - tobacco and whiskey. The pounds just melt away.
Trooper, I know you wouldn't be worried, I think it's amusing as she welcomed "you" back.
Hey I thought the Atkins diet means you can't have an abortion to lose weight even if you got raped.
Or have been misinterping the news lately.
You were just Akin to use that joke, eh?
No Atkins for me Trooper, it's Paleo/ Primal. Atkins is too strict. Akin for bacon.
I looked at Trooper's profile for the clever expandable quote Althouse liked but I didn't see it.
Hey, I didn't know he had two spinoff blogs called Starfish Trooper. Were they miscarried or aborted?
Hey, I didn't know he had two spinoff blogs called Starfish Trooper. Were they miscarried or aborted?
The claw of the seapuss gets us all in the end!
Wow, Althouse was pretty rough on Garage's weight.
That dimwitted, jowly old bleached blonde ratchet-jawed Howdy Doody lookalike should know that commenting on a person's personal appearance is out of bounds.
Trooper and Tim are the exalted ones in Althouse's eyes.
The rest of us are just lesser cohorts.
I should feel offended but I know my place in the pecking order.
Hey it is much more important where you are in the pecker order.
Us Irish guys are at the back of that line. Just sayn'
I think she has been hitting the wine box kind of hard is all.
You can't argue with a crazy person.
That woman is as dumb as a fucking stick. Seriously, profoundly stupid and unaware.
Oy, Tim please tell me you are not Baron Zemo! So in Chickie's link Althouse mentions either Trooper or Theo being Baron Zemo. Plus, why is he, this Baron Zemo guy fixated on me, why is B fixated on me? Hmmmmm, very interesting indeed.....
TTB, for the record, I don't believe for a minute you are Baron Zemo, you are way to sweet and kind a person to be that jerk.
I should feel offended but I know my place in the pecking order.
While I wouldn't dare comment on the sheen of anyone's spear, a cohort who gleams in purple and gold might appear smashing.
You too Trooper.
After he dipped his quill in the inkwell, what did he write?
Fuck Althouse. Does everyone report on the activity on other blogs over there, too, or is that a special activity to share with us?
All this TOP talk reminds me of my new fave TLC show, "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo."
Five incredible epis on YouTube for us cable-deprived peons.
Ryan is clearly a racist, since he didn't marry the gal.
After he dipped his quill in the inkwell, what did he write?
"When intercourse of human events it becomes necessary..."
I will state categorically that I am not now, nor was I ever, Baron Zeno.
"Baron Zeno" causes my stomach to urp a little at the passing thought of him.
I used to attempt privacy by using the screen name, "Theo Boehm."
As it happened, there was no real reason for it. Screen names are mostly a cover for bad behavior. I was subsequently inspired by Michael Haz to use my real name and to stand by everything I write, as myself, on the internet.
As everyone seems to know, however, I've written as other characters. But I doubt anyone would take seriously the ontological status of a dead soul, or a computer-using cockroach, as they appeared in blog comments.
There are misplaced commas in the above. That's what comes of cutting and pasting on a computer instead of being an honest ink-stained wretch pulling on a handle.
And here I am, handing any of you a perfectly good straight line, and what are you doing with it??
I thought you'd appreciate the uncharacteristic deference to decency.
While I wouldn't dare comment on the sheen of anyone's spear, a cohort who gleams in purple and gold might appear smashing.
The good Baron is a Viking?
Maybe. But I think B. Zeno's all purple cuz he's never been able to go all the way..
Baron Zeno should consult TTB on handle pulling.
[There ya go, TT!]
Baron Zemo's tights may be too tight.
Oh, it's "Zemo"? Then my 10:02 makes no sense.
Nothing new in that, I suppose.
I think "Baron Zeno" it is.
But I'd have to check over at t'udder place to make sure, and I don't like upskirt porn.
Now, what about the "ink-stained wretch" part?
No, it's Baron Zemo. He's been around Althouse since as early as 2007, per google search.
Let me know if Baron Samedi shows up there. That might be worth a look.
A Titian portrait in purple and white is not all that glitters?
And all this while I had been calling him by the wrong false name.
I should say, "Oops!," but in the spirit of never admitting you're wrong, so cultivated by the proprietrix of t'udder place, I'll say, "that's interesting, but it's not important."
But I think B. Zeno's all purple cuz he's never been able to go all the way..
Zeno's too busy showing the youth the doors between Truth and False with some of the flock appearing more interested than other. No tights in sight.
As for Samedi, watch out for the wife, a special case symbolized as a black rooster.
A Titian portrait in purple and white is not all that glitters?
chickelit...The clue bus has gone missing on this end, but I'll trade a steed with his nostrils all wide, and a rider distorted and pale, for a glimpse of the Titian.
The Queen of Narcissus panicked and that's why she dropped word verification. I commented that and was deleted by Barney Fife w/ his one bullet. Now, they're both out of bullets.
I am horny.
TOP's dilemma: With WV, comments are boring. Without WV, comments are shitty.
Solution? Moar Meadehouse!
I'm not seeing that Chip. Are they filtering spam by hand over there and that's what makes people cranky?
I was sitting outside my penthouse loft and a thug came running by with his pit. He was shirtless and had some tat writing over his upper back.
He stopped and we talked about our dogs.
i wanted to do him really fucking bad.
He looked long time at me but I was nervous.
Do you guys know that really hard core thugs do gay every now and then?
Titus, they probably pick up a taste for gay in prison. Protect yourself from the viral.
Hey TT (Burnett), did you post as the cockroach? My memory is so bad I can't even remembers the roach's moniker but he was great. It was like the second coming of archy.
chickelit, Good observation. But Titus needs to be aware if they pick it up in prison means they probably like to "pack shit."
Do you guys know that really hard core thugs...
It's called the down-low and they all do it (gay) in the big house, which they don't call the big house but I'm not up on ghetto, thanks be to God.
I know guys, they want to fuck, as a result, I move on.
They are fucking animals. And if I got in any "situation" with them I know they would kill me if I didn't let them fuck me.
Nothing goes up my asshole, as you all know.
I have been thinking about fucking women lately.
What it feels like? How they feel in bed? How will I feel afterwards? What my hog feels like when the vagine grabs it? Could I get off?
It feels great. They like to cuddle. You'll go to sleep after maybe 2 times. If she's really wet it feels like suction in the vag. I think you could because you also get to play w/ the tits. Or..you could titty fuck. That might be your ticket.
They need to be pretty big tits to titty fuck.
I think that women may not be willing to play though?
Would they really be open to you titty fucking them and blow in their face?
Fags generally don't care where you blow.
You could blow on their fabulous designer shirt and they are ok with it. They try their best to clean it up and "head" for the door.
I don't think women would appreciate you splewing on them anywhere and everywhere.
Is that an issue with any of you straighties?
I am concerned about the aftermath and how that is managed.
I guess what I am getting at is...do women hate cum?
Am I wrong?
Titus, watch out for the women with the teeth in the Virginia. They're rare, but they're out there!
Generally women hate cum. But not all. That's a question you simply ask directly.."Where would you like me to cum?" With the titty fuck, a natural progression is blow job, titty fuck, and then finish w/ the vag. The first 2 would be for you, the last for both. And Titus..we've not even discussed eating pussy. Are you "down" w/ that?
Titus, in order to have vag the woman needs to be warmed up. The blow job and titty fuck probably won't do that. So an itinerary that might suit you is blow, titty, eat pussy, vag.
Wow. I missed a lot.
I did read that thread at TOP because I was curious.
I really think that was a terrible thing to do to Garage!
ricpic: Yep, that was me. But don't remind Sixty. He tore into me upon a time for blatant plagiarism and unoriginality for bringing back a poor copy of the original.
But I never intended blogging cockroach to be original, nor did I want him to be a mere copy. I knew our proprietrix was a fan of Don Marquis' work, and I thought I'd try something along those lines that might please her. I was all about making Narcissa happy in those days.
It seemed to work well enough. She front-paged him several times, including a little piece of video where she talked lovingly about him nestling among the keys of her laptop.
It was all to divert the owner of the blog. Whether other commenters liked him or not was their business, but my thought was to do something Madam Narcissa might think of as a friendly gesture—which, of course, she did.
Too bad, when the time came, she had no thought to return the favor, and, in fact, plainly dismissed the idea.
A commenter wisely pointed out that people make a mistake in thinking that the owner of a popular blog might ever be their friend. Your job as an internet commenter is to be a piece of bait. And the worm that has friendly thoughts for the fisherman, and even jumps willingly onto the hook, is making his bad situation worse.
I just wrote a couple of comments and erased before I posted. I'm too annoyed (about that thread at TOP) to say anything nice.
I miss the blogging cockroach, Tim. "He" was adorbs.
Sexually, I am very selfish. I want to get off and leave..and surprisingly many of my conquests are ok with that.
i don't want to satisfy someone. But that is never an issue because they just want to get me off. And they can tell that by just looking at me, what is that all about?
I have very rarely run into another that wants me to blow them or fuck me.
Do I radiate something that says top?
Thank you, Darcy. You've always been a fun, decent and truly nice presence everywhere I've run into you online, and I'm glad if ever I've done anything to cheer you up.
Titus, I don't think your narcissism is confined to sex. When the bloom is off your rose you risk a lonely life.
I am fucking horny and now I have to go out and find sex.
I am thankful, to God Almighty, that I can still attract sex.
It's showtime.
toodles.
Are fairy moans sex attractants?
I really think that was a terrible thing to do to Garage!
Probably so, however, he sort of brought it on to himself. When he is constantly going off about 'fat' 'pussbucket' Limbaugh it is somewhat hypocritical to criticize someone for the very faults that you yourself have.
I don't have a problem with Garage or anyone else taking exception to people's ideas and refuting those. But to go after the physical characteristics is pretty low and leaves yourself open for a rebound attack.
It was a pretty unprofessional move and a low blow on the part of the blog host.
Hey everyone!
I, too, miss Blogging Cockroach and wish it'd make an occasional guest appearance here.
Which topic at TOP are we watching today?
Haz, The 3-4 most recent posts. Barney Fife is deleting and nasty. I really do think they're nasty drunks and Sundays probably is an all dayer.
I totally agree with you, DBQ. I just hated to see them both go after garage personally like that. I see what they did as quite different than describing a public figure in a nasty way.
But glass houses, stones, etc. So true.
If the topic in question is the WV thread, yeah, I did see a few things. But nothing about garage, so perhaps I'm not on the correct topic.
It's excusable, since I may be a member of the lesser cohort.
Lesser Cohort is a great name for a blog, by the way.
Allie posted a link to the thread at 5:52 above yesterday, Michael.
Garage describes Rush as a detestable blob or something, and then Althouse and Meade proceed to call garage out as fat in real life. Discussing his BMI. Apparently Althouse has seen him.
It just made me sad to read.
I need to go on a blog diet. :)
And Tim, thank you for the kind words. You've always been very kind to me, too!
Thanks, Darcy. I read all the comments.
In instances like this, I encourage the "rabbit test."
Walk through the house nude while someone else films the event.
Review the video, then decide whether to comment while asking oneself this question: Are any of my parts best described as "Flopsy, Moppsy and Cotton Tail?"
Ha! Yes.
I only need imagine that test for a second to know that it would be wise stay mum.
Of course I didn't. ;-)
Didn't mean you, Darcy!!
Oh! I know!
I would like to apologize to Mr. Burnett. I was out of line, and while I probably had some stupid reason for what I did, there is no excuse for what I wrote.
I tell ya, I'm workin' on it.
I found sex...it was a repeat.
I think it's a hard thing for people who like the idea of a "community," and who have built in their own minds the ideal of a kind of Platonic "Althouse," to realize how far from reality these fine ideas are, and, sad to say, always have been.
The Althouse who created "Althouse" had an attractive notion in mind. I won't enumerate the qualities of "Althouse" that were so appealing, for fear that naming them would immediately tear down the lovely edifice with a wrecking ball of contradictions made obvious by a mere recital of assumptions.
No, I continue to think of and refer to "Althouse" with great respect, as a kind of lost paradise that never had a chance, mangled as it has been by the very real and deeply flawed Ann Althouse herself.
She had the perspicacity to create "Althouse," but not the character to maintain her. Those of us who sought the ideal have long been frustrated and many have been betrayed.
So, my advice, which first I will follow myself, is to find a "paradise within thee, happier still," and leave "Althouse" to the fallen Althouse herself and to her many legions of genuine lessor cohorts.
Movie night out for the M's with a good time had at "Hope Springs", enjoying it with laughter, tears, appreciation, and understanding. Had a good time talking together about it afterwards too. Noted the therapist basically provided an opportunity for them to listen to themselves and each other differently. Discovered Streep herself, has been married 34 years to the same person.
This, on the heels of watching "Tombstone" on AMC last night, tuning in just before the corral scene where I got to hear the huckleberry line in context. Then on through to the end where 40+ years of marriage were attributed to Wyatt), to pick up the start on the next re-play.
Good times there too, with Doc Holliday as the favorite, and this line standing out: Make no mistake, it's not revenge he's after. It's a reckonin'.
Also, thank you, Sixty Grit. I appreciate that.
I'm sorry I didn't acknowledge you before now, but I wanted to get that last comment written, after which Firefox crashed and took the OS with it. Not wanting to spend the last part of the evening in computer hell, I gave up for a while.
Anyway, computer fixed and now to bed, tomorrow being that new day we all hear about.
Sounds like you have an enviable marriage, MamaM. It's nice to hear about those.
TT, You are wrestling with the eternal problem of all institutions--how to evolve. We never know for sure what's the right call.
I'm unfamiliar with Ye Olde Althouse, but I have heard the lamentations for its loss here before. And I gotta say, sometimes it feels like a chastisement to those of us who arrived late to the party and may have driven away the old-timers with our loud music and boisterousness.
I ran a blog once, long enough ago that there was still a coherent notion of a "blogosphere," with attempts by the bigger blogs to sort out the new ones and let people know if there were any good ones. Insty was around, but not Althouse. It was the time after webzines but before YouTube. The first blog I ever read was called The Misanthropic Bitch--which sounds like Althouse but was funny and comment-free.
My point is that I know how tiresome it is to run a blog with multiple posts per day and lots of comments. At the start it's all fun and games, and you feed off the excitement of a new venture shared with a handful of appreciative readers.
But then comes the first Instalanche, and you face a choice: Do I try to keep my traffic high, or do I let it die back down? And what do I do with the few douchebags who've found my site?
My choice was to fold my tent. Althouse chose to go big. I'm as appalled as anyone else by her inability to admit error, but I respect what she's accomplished in building that site. I think it's noticeably worse since Bloody Sunday, b/c it's lost any sense of community, but this site takes care of that quite nicely. So any time I feel like sparring over politics or something, I go there. But for fellowship, TY is the place to go.
Heck, this is the only site where you can count on people actually reading each other's comments and responding to them.
Chip, wow, I didn't realize that you have a sensitive side! I like that, you and Chickie are witty and quick and it's fun trying to decipher some of your puns, many of them I get amazingly. You both have sharp edges at times, which makes things interesting( hope that doesn't sound like Althouse).
It's great seeing some walls coming down and getting to know personal details of each other's lives.
Our family welcome home party for my daughter was wonderful despite rain for most of the day. My daughter actually loved it and the humid hazy day that ensued. Son in law got the steaks done, without getting drenched. We ended the evening with a pontoon boat ride and the sunset through the clouds and the reflection on the lake was pretty.
I didn't sleep well last night.
Too much blog-reading before bed time, I think. Visions of garage's BMI, Allie's butt, Titus's feel-copping, the real identity of Baron Zemo and Naomi's orgasm issues kept me from sleeping well.
Speaking of movies and blogs.....sort of.
We are trying to back off on watching Dish, especially the news. All the news type shows do, is to raise our anxiety and blood pressure. The are just repetitions of the same thing with people yelling and talking over each other. Besides by the time we are done 'cruising' on the net, we have been pretty much fully informed about what is happening.
So...we bought a Roku box and are trying to wean ourselves completely from Dish, and safe some money.
BUT...I'm not finding it at all easy to locate programs, line up programs to watch and basically it seems like a giant pain in the ass. It takes too long to find a show and then find out that it is just a damned clip or that "you can only watch this on a computer"
What am I doing wrong? Anyone else out there have a Roku?
DBQ - We've started weaning ourselves off the usual news sources (ABC, CBS, NBC) while watching FNC with a more skeptical eye.
We've found that the news shows on EWTN, of all places, are remarkably balanced and thorough. While they have a clear viewpoint on some matters, they are very upfront about identifying those mattters and that viewpoint.
I want a Roku too.
I love the Roku, my kids got it for me one Christmas and I thought to myself, what the heck am I going to do with this thing, but since have really appreciated their choice. Its great, especially for when I'm babysitting so many great choices for kids too. My kids got me the Neftflix subscription and it's been a couple years already and I never renewed it, so I assume my kids are, I have great kids:)
Haz, my butt seems to get me in trouble , still at MY age!!
We are on a 30 day trial and can return it and cancel the subscriptions if we don't like it.
So far I have discovered on Hulu Plus, that most of the shows we would like to watch are not available through the Roku box and we have to watch on our computer screens. (White Collar, Suits, Burn Notice) OR...if available only a few full episodes are available. Otherwise it is clips. BLECH why do I want to watch a clip of a show. Some shows that are older are available for multiple whole seasons, like "In Plain Sight", which is cool because we didn't get to see that show when it was out.
It is just so hard to scroll through the menus and try to find what we would like to watch. We don't have kids so I would love to filter out all the cartoon and kiddie crap.
The news shows are all ABC, CBS, NBC and we never ever watch those. You can't get Fox news live, just clips of some things or shows like O'Reilly, which is one of the shows we hate because of all of the yelling.
Pandora..is GREAT.
The movies on the free channels are mostly stuff we don't want to watch anyway. Haven't hooked up with Netflix for their trial yet and am hoping that they will at least have some movies that we want to watch.
Amazon, you can buy shows and series or pay 79$ for Amazon Prime and download some of the shows for free. The series idea is cool because we would like to watch some of those HBO shows like Dexter, Deadwood etc.
However...the idea was to save some money and watch stuff we want to watch. By the time we add in all the subscriptions and paid for downloads. I dunno. Is it worth it?
Plus...the dumbplumber is not techno at all and I have to run the remotes, the programs. He can't watch TV unless I'm there. And like the cat...he doesn't handle change very well.
:-D
DBQ, on my Roku, I get Neftflix, but there is Amazon , Hulu Plus and more to subscribe to. I have a que that I put my movies and shows on, there are two separate lists, one for streaming, one for the DVD. I can choose movies from the Netflix site online or from the Netflix on the TV . When I want to stream it on the iPad, I just go to the site that is downloaded from the Netflix app.
Maybe I'm not understanding your problem correctly, but that's how my Roku thingy box works for me, no problems.
Oops, sorry didn't see your comment DBQ, before I posted mine.
Another issue, is that our TV is a bit older....we really need a nice big flat screen and have been putting that purchase off because the hubby is getting his work trucks painted and refurbished, one by one, to bring them up to snuff. Business before pleasure.
So....the words on the screen, describing the shows, are almost illegible and I get frustrated.
Sigh.
DBQ, Rent the flick, Bernie, on Dish. A nonfiction dark comedy set in East Texas. We saw it in the theatre and loved it.
DBQ - We've started weaning ourselves off the usual news sources (ABC, CBS, NBC) while watching FNC with a more skeptical eye.
Once fully weaned, you'll be shocked at how contrived it all looks when you do watch it now and again.
The only advantage of a steady diet of cable news is an ability to chat it up with others about the same events, so there is that. In that sense, it's like mainstream sports.
you'll be shocked at how contrived it all looks when you do watch it now and again.
The advertisements surprise me too, when I return to television after being away for a week or two. After the first few, however, I quickly become inured.
As far as seeing differently, the story and pics on color blindness in The Daily Mail today are fascinating.
I've been at the in-laws the past few days. MIL had knee replaced and the kids scheduled days to stay and help with physical therapy and such. FIL is recovering from broken leg back in May. SIL sprained her ankle Saturday, so everyone here is laid up. We didn't tell them I was coming. I made a few calls to sort out work, and was headed here w/in about 30 minutes of the call. Shocked them all when I walked in. Been cooking, cleaning, doing PT, shopping, all sorts of fun domestic stuff.
Anyhow, when I got here, they had Fox News on the t.v. It was just about on my last nerve after about 3 hours. How does anyone listen to the same news over and over and over?
Vapid. All of them.
(...and I forgot how little I like the Piedmont.)
Don't be trash talkin' my Piedmont. Sure, we may seem like flatlanders to you, but not all of us can move to the mountains, as alluring as they are.
As for the color (colour!) blind site, I can't see any difference in the pictures. Is that a hoax?
As for the color (colour!) blind site, I can't see any difference in the pictures. Is that a hoax?
Lol! No. For those interested in an Althouse connection, the tweaking of color, and ramping up of intensity and contrast she does with some of her photo compositions enhances their vibrancy. This encourages the eyes to linger or take a second look, as they detect something "more than" or on the outside edge of normal. What Van Gogh appears to have inadvertently done with his work yielded similar results.
@ Sixty...As long as you're skilled with the gouge, at least one of the senses is up to snuff.
OK, Althouse can have van Gogh, but Traditional Guy's comparison of her to Isaac Newton was a bridge too far. Set me off against him for a day or two it did.
Hurricane Isaac perhaps, but FGS not Newton.
I think of the Piedmont along the same lines as General Phil Sheridan's thoughts on Texas, "If I owned Hell and Texas, I'd rent Texas and live in Hell."
Lived in the Charlotte area for five years, after growing up in upstate NY. Partly the heat, partly the big city life (the town I grew up in had 32 houses), partly just the difference in Northern and Southern living, but I hated it. Perversely enough, we're talking about moving back here as the in-laws age and will start requiring care.
When my son was about 3 or 4, he took a leak out in my in-laws' front yard (facing the road to top it off). In as exasperated a voice as you can imagine, my MIL asked, "Can't you do something about that?" I just laughed.
@ MammaM
The color blind article was interesting. I've related this before. My mother was color blind (very rare for a woman) and naturally my brother is as well. We learned at an early age that a scenic vista that I and my father were all enthralled about was just a colossal bore for them.
Instead of describing somethings by color, we would use more descriptive words. Not...please hand me the blue bowl, because that could be anything from brown, green, blue, gray or dull red. It was...please hand me the 10 inch bowl with the embossed flowers on it.
My mother's favorite colors were yellow and orange. God only knows what they looked like to her. My brother still relies on his wife to check his clothing before he goes out into the world.
Fox News on the t.v. It was just about on my last nerve after about 3 hours. How does anyone listen to the same news over and over and over?
Seriously. That's one of the main reasons we have cut it off. Same shit over and over. That and the people talking over each other. In real life is someone did that to me, I would literally smack them. SHUT UP!!!!! TAKE YOUR TURN!!!!!
I do miss Fox Business first thing in the morning because it was informative and had some interesting takes on the market and the world of economics. BUT...I can get much better information from FT.COM, Investors Business Daily, WSJ. Plus it has become more political than it used to be. Not that I disagree with their slant on why the economy sucks, but I really just want the facts jack.
Who doesn't love a good vino barbera piemontese?
Well, the Queen city is a place worth avoiding. I have been to the race track outside of town and to the airport, but never to Charlotte proper. I am more of a country boy myself.
My grandfather built a house in Jackson Mississippi, and was proud of the fact that he could micturate off the front porch without being seen from the street - I guess that is a benefit that accrues from owning a huge tract of land. Well, maybe benefit is not the correct word.
Even people who know me well will say things like "Hand me the red book" and I'll ask for description that excludes color - my life is more like 50 shades of gray.
Okay, that's not right, as I can see yellow and blue. No restraints on those two.
DBQ --
I went to the Minnesota State Fair today and they have an area called Heritage Center or something like that, and one of the buildings says Free Press, Free People and inside are all of the old machinery that used to be used to print papers, including a Linotype and Intertype machine. They actually print a small paper everyday.
@ Allen
Very cool. I would love to see a working linotype again. It would sure bring back memories. Here is a post I did a long time ago and a photo of my father standing next to a refurbished linotype (think). Much prettier and shinier than the ones they worked with.
Hope you find this interesting and not rude.(I certainly don't mean to offend) When my parents worked at the Mercury News the union pressmen were almost exclusively deaf, from birth. Not just from the noise of the presses, which I bet would damage your hearing if they didn't wear ear plugs. The deaf workers were great at their jobs and used sign language as well as some sort of visual signs, flags to communicate. I thought that it was very cool and that these guys had an edge on everyone else by being deaf. My dad learned some sign language so he could tell dirty jokes, cuss in sign language and get the punchlines of the jokes they were telling.
Oooopsie.
Link to the post
Nothing was louder than the press room. We had to wear ear protection and steel toed shoes/boots. If you were caught without, you were fired after the second offense. Back in the 1960's there was a deaf man who worked in the typesetting department. I got to know him and learned sign language. Unfortunately, he signed so fast, I could never understand him and I'd make him start over all of the time. It must have been very frustrating for him. He liked to smoke pot.
The sign about the Intertype machine that they had said where it was used and that it was used until 1976. They also had galleys of type that were put together. Their office had some really old typewriters.
The pressroom had 16 presses when I left. We had about 100 pressmen (3 of which were women) working 3 shifts. I don't think that there were that many deaf people in the area.
@AllenS: How many deaf printers do you suppose there where in Wisconsin in the 1960s?
Co-inkydink?
Ah, well. Maybe I remember it wrong. I was a kid listening to my dad's stories. That would have been in the early 1960's About the numbers of the deaf workers. Or maybe they were just on one shift.
I also remember when they started to use teletype. My mother would bring home spools of the tape and practice reading the punctured dots so she could get good enough to work on the teletype, read the tape easily and be able to check the work for errors. Proofreading in a way. Something like this machine I think.
I don't know. I worked for West Publishing. Originally they were in St. Paul, MN., and then they moved to Eagen, MN. It's now Thomson/Reuters.
Those spools of tape were used on the Intertype machines, correct? We had about 10-15 of those. Man, I'm at an age, where I've probably forgotten more than I presently know.
And, when I was at the fair today, someone said to me: "I know you." I didn't recognize him and then he said: "West Publishing. You worked in the pressroom." He worked in the bindery. Small world.
Yes. I think so. As I recall the tape came over with the story sent via the teletype, like from AP or Reuters. Then my mother would set the lead/hard type from the tape and I think eventually, the tape interfaced with the machine and set the type itself. This was sort of towards the end of printing as a skilled trade and when computerization set in and all you needed to know was how to type.
I think shortly after that(early 70's) the paper(s) made a deal with the Typographical Workers Union and bought them out. The workers either could stay and type in non union conditions ...or take a lump sum payout. My dad and mom took the pay out and began writing travel books for a living.
AllenS, I had an uncle who was a typewriter salesman for Olivetti Underwood in Hartford, Ct. He was a self taught, very smart man. In the early 70's he moved up to Vt. for a new job. I helped Uncle Joe move and he explained to me, on our truck ride up Interstate 91,that typewriters will be extinct soon. He said he saw wood heating of homes was only to get more popular w/ the rise of oil prices. The new job in Vt. was w/ Vt. Stoves! He did quite well for 30 years. Uncle Joe died two years ago.
You gotta go with the flow, Nick.
Set me off against him for a day or two it did.
Laughing again! He's said some quirky and outside-my-reality things in recent months. But I prefer his method of pot stirring to some of the others presented there.
Which brings to mind the Mess o' Pottage Isaac who experienced a change in sight in his later years and ended up doling his favors and blessings out of turn.
I wonder sometimes if the trip up the mountain did something to the Hebrew Isaac that wasn't entirely positive and blissful. Renewal and recovery experiences can sometimes be like that, especially when they involve trauma.
A stricken heart, a ride in the helicopter, a few minutes in the big darkness, and a life handed back; the ending of one reality, the beginning of another. Once that happens, the tidy traditional box no longer fits or feels the same.
These kinds of threads flummox me, as there's too much good stuff to respond with ease. While I'm thinking about it, life keeps happening.
Dipped his Quill in Inkwell.
Very racist, but I love it.
Hi everyone, how are you...I am super, thanks for asking.
tits.
The fancy, fully plumed quill is mostly a Hollywood invention and has little basis in reality
You know Mamam I have dipped my quill in the inkwell.
I hope you haven't lost any respect for me.
But, f you don't know, I have a hankering for Jungle Fever.
I like to call them a dirty fucking nigger while pounding them. I ease into though as I am not always sure of their reaction.
tits.
flamboyant, even
Speaking of plumminess and lesser cohorts, Carnafac the Magnificent lined up his chips at the other Big TOP with the following pronouncement:
And if Chip A got any nicer it would start to lap over onto Chip S, and give us all diabetes.
And if it spills on chickelit, the result will be a case of gold and purple Peeps.
What happens if Titus touches it is anybody's guess.
JFT (Just for Titus)
Flamboyant birds are oversexing themselves into premature aging. The male Houbara bustard of North Africa is one of the animal kingdom's most extravagant creatures, with huge ornamental feathers and complex, energetic mating practices known as "booming."...Booming is a highly elaborate display meant to attract a mate, and it takes a lot out of the males - starting, disturbingly enough, with their sperm count...Those birds that did the most booming were consistently the least fertile. And it wasn't that the bustards were compensating for a deficiency they had been born with. Rather, it was the displays themselves that seemed to sap the life out of the males.
Let's keep a tally this week of the number of posts at TOP that encourage the bashing of Catholics and the support of gay marriage.
I may be a bit overly sensitive to this, who knows? But I think there's a monontonous recurring pattern.
Sunday - Catholic bashing in the "Land of HuffPo" thread.
Monday - "Why Would a Guy Want to Marry a Guy?"
She is cruelly stuck in neutral.
They're just a lonely, elf obsessed, couple. We can pick out many things that perturbs us. However, reading people for a living taught me how to break things down to their essence, the lcd if you're a math person. THEY HAVE NO FRIENDS.
My bad..they're "self"
obsessed..Trooper is elf obsessed.
Meade fancies dwarfs who have a good pension plan.

A Fourier analysis may be in order whereby the weakly sinusoidal pattern which plays out in real time can be converted to a plot of signal intensity as a function of frequency. Linewidth (bandwidth) will be an important as will be signal to noise ratio.
Spinelli - Nailed it.
Plus, you gave Trooper a topic for a new thread. "Elf obsessed."
Know what I mean?
Haz, I also remember a Keebler Elf post by Trooper a few months ago.
Hahaha...Laughing at 'elf obsessed'.
The mental picture comes to me of them dressing up in elf costumes and prancing around the house while speaking in twee little elf voices.
@DBQ And quoting form taht great sex book "Our Bodies and Our Elves".
They are elf-actualized.
In stead of following Bob Dylan around that could do that for Elfin John.
No lack of elf esteem over there.
Elves good, but Carl Perkins bettah.
I have always been a little too elfish.
A typo I made creates MONSTERS! I feel like Dr. Frankenstein.
THEY HAVE NO FRIENDS
Not sure what this is about. Looks like my definition of friends might be different from ND's, or maybe my expectations aren't the same.
In my view, the more well known a person is, the smaller their circle of true friends-those with whom they can be real and intimate. It's a matter of self preservation; as the group of admirers and haters grows, so does the number of those willing to use and betray them.
I don't expect two adults who've both raised their own families, survived divorces, attended to careers, and built lives in separate locales and communities to have many others besides themselves, their children and a good friend or two to stand beside them when they embark on a new life together.
Whether they have no friends or not doesn't matter to me, but the elf sidebar was fun.
Even my friends don't like me.
Chrissake MaMa..they aren't celebrities except in their own mind. I think it's significant, you don't. C'est la vie.
they aren't celebrities except in their own mind. I think it's significant, you don't.
Celebrities? No
Well known within the political blogging community, with a group of politically connected supporters, admirers and haters forming around them? Yes
Whether Insty and Dr Helen have no friends or not isn't something I care much about either.
Windbag's story, however, is a whole nother case.
admirers and haters forming around them? Yes
"A coterie of independent detractors" was how I put it once.
The Royal Clucker trumped Meade's limited understanding what the word "decimation" means. But I guess that is kind of a backhanded compliment, eh?
That word means what you think it does, CL, with apologies to TPB.
Who's TBP?
The Princess Bride.
A coterie of independent detractors"
Tractor: from L. trahere "to pull, draw"
Hadn't thought of the word detractor, but it covers a lot. Different from disagreement or presenting an opposing view.
So it looks like AllenS's detective foo wasn't far off with the "Neither of them owns a dozer", answer to chickelit's earlier question of commonality.
@MamaM noted: Tractor: from L. trahere "to pull, draw"
I have felt drawn or pulled to certain commenters over there, so there's that too in case that's not exactly what you meant.
@MamaM: But TOP deploys forces of repulsion too. That's what I was getting at with my "Portrait of An Autist" juxtaposed with my "Portrait of an Enzyme" posts a while back. I recall you were curious about the former but I never explained it.
so there's that too
There is. It's a curious thing, a push/pull phenomena. Which is why I liked the word detractor. But deploy is another good one.
Amid the detraction, repulsion, and deployment, I continue to be surprised when unexpected silver cups show up in the grain.
Regarding Autists and Enzymes:
OK, memories of things pabst are coming back. I found both portraits and now have all put one leg figured. Need a pencil and paper to make headway with the rest.
