Don't you hate to give up stuff you used to like?

I was always a big fan of American Idol. Even when everyone else dumped it I would comment and follow it closely and mock it. It was a lot of fun.

But now I think I have to stop watching. Because of Nicky Minaj.

You see I don't support people who deliberately attack my values. People like Susan Sarrandon, Sean Penn, the BJ Hunnicut guy, Matt Damon and of course Nicky the Cunt Minaj.

Now normally rap stars don't affect my life. They are sort of like NASCAR drivers or bike faggots like Lance Armstrong or washed up septuagenarian dinosaurs like Bob Dylan. Good to mock now and again but who really gives a shit?

Last year or maybe even the year before I was watching some stupid Music Award show. It might have been the Grammy's or the American Music Awards or something. Anyway this bitch has big production number and it was all about attacking the Catholic church. She had an old white guy dressed as a priest and altar boys and she just did disgusting and sacrilegious shit on the stage and her audience just lapped it up and cheered. None of them were offended. Nobody said they shouldn't attack a religion. You can bet your ass if was the Muslims they would have went ape-shit.  But since it was that Catholics it was fine.

Well after that I vowed never to watch another thing the Nicky Minaj was involved in. So I am dropping American Idol and will attack her and the show and everyone associated with it in any way I can. It is just bullshit.

Watch and see. It will not be pretty.

Never heard of her.

It's all Greek-style to me.

I'll bet Troop would like it if just one of the regulars liked one of the shows he posts about all the time.

That's ok.

Sixty can watch the Gator Boys show and blake can enjoy Downtown Abby and Titus loves Mets games.

Everybody should watch what they like.

Besides I am trying to enrich your cultural horizons a little.

I am more of a TCM kind of guy. Or Pawn Stars - I like to watch pros negotiate - Rick has some mad skillz, yo.

I have watched the lumberjack shows, mainly to see what technical points I can pick up, but I refuse to watch any show where animals are endangered or killed. Cannot abide watching such things.

You would like the Gator shows.

It is these two goobers in Florida who rescue Gators in canals and pools and what not.

And they get bit all the time.

I watched AI for the first couple of seasons because it was a new concept and because it was interesting to watch and hear Simon Cowell. The guy is smart and was honest about the contestant's abilities.

Then it wore thin and became something of a freak show. Cowell was mailing it in, working on a new show somewhere else. Or just counting his money.

The promos for this year's show are awful. I can't think of any reason the watch it. None.

Well maybe if there was a nude singer or two, maybe.

I never could bear to watch AI. The auditions seemed cruel, and I have no particular affection for the music nor the techno-glitz-pop-production values. I'd rather listen to Bob Dylan wheeze on his harmonica.

I'm basing this solely on a few snippets, of course, because I've never watched it, despite your encouragement.

What I've discovered, I think, about reality TV is not that I don't like it because it's ugly, but because it's slanted to be ugly.

The Flower likes "Storage Wars" (rigged according to Dave Hester) and "Dual Survival" (strains credulity) and lately "Shipping Wars".

The idea of "Shipping Wars" is fairly appealing: A bunch of guys (with an assortment of implausibly hot chicks) bid on shipping custom items across the country, trying to get the highest amount they can get but competing with the other guys on price.

It's such a wonderfully American thing. We have many strange and wonderful things, and there's a free market for moving it around.

But then they have these asides and conflicts and drama and I just don't buy it.

I don't know. Maybe it's true and this is how people are. I still don't have to buy it.

It's kind of a mirror image of '50s television, where everyone was professional and crabby people were mostly comic relief. But nobody believed that was reality, either.

Who are we that we need people to be worse than they are?

I know that Darcy and I like Justified. Unfortunately, I can't get the current episodes now, since we cut our Dish subscription back to the basics and have gone Hulu, Netflix, Amazon etc.

There is some Director of the Tea Party Network on Piers Morgan her name is Scottie Hughes and she is HUGE-is she a drag queen?

The Dude said...

I like Justified, even if their version of Kentucky happens to be identical to California.

I watched the "I Dream of Jeannie Cusamano" episode of The Sopranos again the other day - it still bothers me that Paulie runs into what looks like a linden sapling and immediately starts scratching saying he got poison ivy. Wrong plant, inaccurate reaction. But the fact that Mikey Palmice gets whacked offsets some of the botanic inexactitude.

@DBQ: I don't count "Justified" as one of the shows Trooper likes--I must have missed that.

I too like the show. Episode 2 is on tonight.

And Sixty? He can't stand it because the trees are all wrong--he's an arborealist.

You know, "Dirty Jobs" is an awesome show. But I wouldn't class it as reality TV. It's all professional.

I like that. Professionalism is awesome. Especially when you're looking at these jobs that shore up society.

And Mike Rowe's MikeRoweWorks Foundation is also awesome.

I do not bother with American Idol. Good for you on dumping that show.
Here is something you can use...

Mainly we read, fart around online or game.

We've been streaming on Roku since they started up and with their channels and Prime that's about as much as we want or need.

We cut back to basic cable when HBO started with the political hit pieces and dumped Comcast cable entirely when they bought NBC. Fuck 'em.

btw-Amazon has a huge assortment of $5 DVDs on sale right now.

"BJ Hunnicut guy" - I haven't thought about that asshole in 20 years. Is he still alive?

Other than "Mad Men" the only series we have time to watch is "Breaking Bad".

blake said...

He's still alive but he's easy to miss without missing.

"Don't you hate to give up the stuff you used to like" seems an apt title for chumming with old friends.

Hey you can always dip your foot in without living there.
