There is no reason to stop by Althouse's place now that the comments are gone. I disagreed with many of the points made there, stopped commenting back in 2011, but the comments made that place.
Althouse is delusional if she thinks her weak blogging skills alone will suffice to make that place worth visiting.
Until I get more information I shouldn't speculate on why she did what she did, but I am curious as to whether there was a trigger event that set of this cascade of bizarreness.
Maybe she just grew tired of trying to maintain the streak. Nah, that can't be right - she's still puttin' stuff out there.
Nevermind - I have other things to concern myself with.
Sixty grit, things had been getting nastier "over there" with all the gay marriage stuff in the news lately. She's for it, and a lot of the commenters were ag'in' it. It's a topic where things often get heated, and things did.
Then, after the SCOTUS rulings she put up a post telling the losing side to "not act like losers". This pissed people off more, (a) no one likes having their faces rubbed in it, (b) a lot of people (though certainly not all) had made fairly well-considered arguments as opposed to merely pissing all over the other side and (c) a lot of people on the "losing" side weren't willing to give up the fight. So a sizable chunk of the commentariat got pissed off even more, but now directed it at Althouse.
Althouse then tried lawyerly tricks to state she hadn't called people losers, merely saying they were acting like losers. Them's weasel words in my book, and in the book of others.
(My example of why this sucks: Try going up to a bunch of brothers wearing their pants below their asses, wearing hoodies in the middle of a July afternoon and passing around a 40. Tell them to "stop acting like niggers" and then when they take exception tell them, "I didn't call you niggers, I just said you were ACTING like niggers." You can tell us how it worked out when you get out of the hospital.)
So this was the pyre that was burning bright when something new came up. Instanerd (I will call him that in honor of our host) put up a post about some man who had been told by some woman that she was on the pill, she wasn't, she got intentionally pregnant and stuck him with the bill. (Or something like that. I could tell this was all going to a bad place and skipped it.)
Althouse said something to the effect that the man should have been more careful about where he put his sperm, and tough titty sailor. The term "Splooge Stooge" was used. This was blowing vaporized gasoline onto the pyre.
A good chunk of the commentariat came to the defense of the idea of men’s rights, abortion MUST have come up (again, I skipped this obvious shit storm), Althouse kept mocking the concerns of men in particular while claiming that women get all kinds of extra rights, etc. Things were getting nastier.
And then Mary showed up again. You either know who that is and what she does, or you don’t. Frankly I’d have rather had Charlie Manson show up in the comment section. This was like dropping a small nuclear bomb onto the fire, and that was that.
The comments got restricted to “Team Members”, comments could only be posted by Meade or Althouse, and if you wanted anything posted you had to email the comment to them for it to be posted. Now Althouse has disabled comments completely.
I have reason to believe that this isn’t permanent (not merely speculation on my part), and that at some point sooner or later (September, perhaps, if Althouse doesn’t crack sooner) comments will return. Some people are likely to be excluded. Frankly, I’m okay with it if they exclude the right people. Mary should be locked up in a crazy ward somewhere. I won’t miss PMJ or Nichevo or Inga or Ritmo or any of a number of people. I don’t think it will be strictly ideological, though. I have reason to believe I will likely be invited back, and I’m both crazy and “right-wing”.
Now I don’t KNOW who would be excluded (other than Mary), but I suspect that at least some of the names I mentioned will also be toast. I expect a lot of the old-timers to be invited back regardless. We’ll see.
One huge problem is that Althouse has been getting pretty pissy with people and just doesn't want to acknowledge her own role in generating bad feelings.
Then, after the SCOTUS rulings she put up a post telling the losing side to "not act like losers".
I memorialized her exact words here (with my own added flourish at the end). Her remarks preceded most of the worst "bad faith comments" of which she complained.
chickelit, how can you stand to read all that crap at the poll?
And I don't think Althouse cares about Inga one way or the other. _I_ would like to see Inga gone, if only because it will free up some time in the middle of the night for Matthew Sablan to get some sleep. (If you see a thread with 500+ comments, the two of them have probably been up all night going at it. If the thread is over 600 comments, Palladian and I have probably been up poking at them for fun.)
Also, I forgot that she actually said, "Man up, losers" before telling them to stop acting like losers. Which just makes the weaselly lawyer trick a little more weasel-like.
Really, the most impressive (?!) thing in the whole dust-up has been Althouse's complete and total refusal to acknowledge her role in setting a bad tone.
Althouse had a meltdown. No big deal. Her mistake was in having a second meltdown when she was called on the first meltdown. In other words she broke the golden rule:
I think it is fine if they limit the comments to a select few. There is no better way to ensure that the blog will ultimately fail.
You see the craziness in the comments are the only thing that gave it life. Endless comment threads by the likes of traditional guy, Freeman Hunt, Richard Dolan and Somefeller will kill it deader than Murphy's dick.
I went over there just now and I feel sad. It's like she's talking to an empty room. And you know what I actually have a meme pic of an empty room with the caption that says, "This is the room for those that care."
I like Freeman Hunt, always have. I don't always agree with her and vice versa, but I have always liked and respected her.
I won't go into rant mode (at least tone wise) about Mary again. I will repeat that she is a...tool. I figured out who she was, down to her law office number, something like 8 years ago, after she attacked at my own then-blog (long ago deleted), in case I need to take her on offline. Folks such as Ruth Anne, SoQuoted, Pooh, Mark Daniels, XWL, Victoria and Icepick, to name a few off the top of my head, were commenters at the time there, and I'm pretty sure that both Icepick and Ruthie, at least, were present in at least one or two of the threads in which she did her dirty work.
Later, when I co-blogged for a while with my long-time IRL friend Callimachus, he turned up there. She was the first, and one of only two, commenters there who were ever banned (the second threatened to contact Cal's employer); smartly enough, he was an early user of Haloscan, through which one could block IPs.
Later, when I briefly had an active Tumblr blog, she also turned up out of the blue. That time, I banned her from the first comment.
As noted, there were also several run-ins with her at Annie's blogs, both Ambivablog and Ambiance, which of course Ruth Anne, Icepick and numerous others witnessed first-hand. I've already made clear and plain how profoundly terrible those were, so no need to rehash.
While I'm skeptical on principal of the notion that "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" as a generic notion, I can understand its application in specific circumstances--provided that the enemy-cum-friend is not, himself, herself, or itself a vile entity. In this case, Mary is a vile entity, and I do indeed...take a very dim view of anyone who, for any reason, would consider her a friend. Not all ends justify all means.
Team Member? That sounds like some shitty health plan or something? Oh wait, is that what they call a jobs at Walmart, Target, or Costco?
Troops private blog works because it is not designed to generate revenue, other than the benefit of amusing those who participate in it.
Ann is trying to make income from her blog given the volume of traffic it generates (or should I say used to generate). Restricted comments and pissing off Glenn Reynolds and Dr. Helen are not a strategy for that.
Her posts do not have much substance (I am guilty of that too, but I am not doing millions of hits a year like she is). She managed to get away with it because she had some interesting commentators to give people a reason to go check the place out. A handful of mostly Ann sycophant commentators are not going to generate much interest. It will still do fairly big numbers from most blogs, but not enough to generate the money and who wants to ride something going down hill?
She will likely start losing interest. Meade might want to consider a back up plan of a landscape company. He can buy his tools through Ann's Amazon portal! Win Win.
Freeman Hunt is a nice person and I have her blog on my blogroll, but she does a post about once every few months or so (if that). Are you really going to go visit Althouse because she is telling Ann that she agrees with her?
What's left? Inga going nuts? Maybe Titus showing up?
Checking in over there today left me w/ an image of the teenage AA in her pj's curled up on the bed talking on her Princess phone w/ her bff.
A: OMG, isn't Dylan just dreamy?
F: I dunno, 'house. I think he's kind of a creep.
A: No way, Freems!
Anyway, wasn't that geometry test the worst thing? I hate Mr. Dolan's class. He's so stupid.
Remember when I said there are some triangles with more than 180° in them, and he told me I should think about it some more? He obviously doesn't know anything about pink triangles, which are just dreamy!
F: Annie, I gotta go. Daddy's gonna check my homework in a few, and I need to ask him for money to buy the new Amy Grant album.
A: Geez, Freems, your dad's really strict. My dad loves me no matter what. Or at least that's what he said the last time he talked to me, back in 8th grade. Right before I lost the spelling bee to that stupid kid in the Mexican wrestling mask.
I've never been a regular Instapundit reader. Nothing against Instapundit or his blog, but I just never happened to get into that habit. (Odd, I know, given how long I've read in the blogosphere, but there it is.) In fact, the vast, vast majority of times I've hit his blog are due to Althouse links.
That said, I have visited over the past few days, curious over his reaction. Are you all aware that he has linked to Althouse since her last post referencing him (unless I've got the timeline wrong, which is possible, in which case it was just before)? I think all of this is playing out, and will continue to play out, in ways not necessarily in line with much of the speculation I've been seeing not just here, but in general. The world is a weird place, the blogosphere even more so.
I really respect rcommal's opinion and I a sure she knows this. But I have to go against the grain and say that I always found Freeman Hunt to be very sanctimonious.
I don't consider Mary a friend. That was just a saying.
On a fundamental level, I don't really care about what Althouse does with her comments section anymore. There's this sense of toying with people permeating the whole thing--which I suppose is ironic, given that, IMO, a lot of the commentary there was also about toying with people, from my POV. It's a turnoff that's become a numbing, at least for me. Not a good thing, and I have not reacted well to that over time.
I have not seen a link directly to Althouse from Instapundit since the dust up...but maybe I missed it. He used to link to her every other day. But he is going to regularly link to those who will benefit him.
Evi, he linked to one post that consisted entirely of a reader comment (on the Don Zimmer trial--'bout time they brought that gerbil to justice). But I read that as a subtle way of saying, "Oh, I know what you're saying. It's just not worth responding to."
If there are recent links to things she's offered up as her own opinions, then that's something else entirely. I just haven't noticed them.
There have been no links since the dust up. I mean why would link to someone who is picking a fight with you.
This is particularly ironic when I remember douchenozzles like caplight and others asking how I could be mean to the evil blogger lady when she gave me all these free links to promote my blog! What happened to that you fuckin dicks!
Gotta say, Chip, that while I have never spoken to Freeman (unlike many other commenters, at this point), I have exchanged numerous emails with her over the years as well as interacted with her via Twitter, IMs and Facebook (the latter both under our real names), and never once--not one single time--has she ever come off like that or like that sort of person. At all. Never once.
That said, everyone is entitled to his or her opinion, and it's no skin off my teeth whether people like Freeman or not, or anyone else--with some exceptions, of course, including--natch!--Monstrous Mary.
I think the line was crossed when the evil blogger lady went after edutcher. I mean I expect her to be nasty to me and take cheap shots like the TLC promo thing. Fair enough. This is the NFL and you have to be ready to take a shot if you want to give a shot. But edutcher is a harmless retard who loved him some evil blogger lady.
That's why I think he is Renfield. A hapless stooge in the thrall of an inhuman demon.
I will, however, defend Freeman, as I have other online friends--or even NOT friends, more rarely, it's true--from time to time, mildly anyway, if I see fit, for whatever reason. I respect that others do the same, even if we disagree about the defendee in the other direction (with, as repeated ad nauseum, now, occasional exceptions).
I'm not a lawyer, but Athouse probably has in place all the physical evidence she needs to file a lawsuit against Mary, including her IP address, and monetary damages in the form of Amazon traffic (no matter how small or large) indirectly caused by shutting down her comments.
The discovery phase would be interesting to say the least.
I missed whatever it was she said to edutcher, unless you're talking about the thing about commenters who don't get the joke, where she only mentioned him in the tag--which I actually thought was pretty funny, esp. since he didn't get that joke either.
But then, I enjoy some well-done snark. It's a real character flaw.
She posted a couple of times where she said the edutcher never got it. A couple of cunts like somefeller, Harrogate and Inga took that up and started a fake sympathy campaign for special ed. If you are the teacher you don't encourage the other kids to pick on someone. Especially a retard like special ed. Just sayn'
Ann has a lawsuit? Good luck with that (NOT!). Discovery works both ways, btw. Ann may be a law professor, but she is generally clueless about anything beyond her narrow little discipline.
Ann decided to shut down comments. She can blame Mary all she wants (and I am not defending Mary), but Ann was not compelled to do what she did.
Freeman is just showing loyalty to Althouse at this point. I think they fundamentally disagree over some matters, such as for example the exact way in which Prop. 8 was litigated in California as well as many libertarian issues which Althouse would disagree with. Besides, Althouse is an atheist and Freeman isn't--can there be a more fundamental division? But they appear to have a long standing bond and I'm not going to get between them. We've communicated offline for years, never frequently, and she seems level headed.
The edutcher thing reminds me that--AFAIK--it was AA who first called garage mahal "fat", which started a whole new meme in the comments.
IIRC, she said it in response to his reference to Phil Mickelson's manboobs, so he did sort of lead w/ his chins, but it's one clear example of her direct contributions to the personal nature of the comments there.
OTOH, my geometry teacher was very cute, even if very pregnant later in the school year. And my 11th grade chemistry teacher was hot enough to be in a Van Halen video, though unfortunately she was not.
It's funny 'cause it's true! She also speaks very quickly, so you've gotta listen fast or get left completely in the dust. That's challenging for slow Southern ears.
Yesterday, Instapundit linked to TOP though, to be fair, he neither mentioned her name nor quoted her, but...wait for it...a reader, initials S.C., whose writing is the major substance of the blog post.
I agree, yet again, with R,L that Mary is a not-to-be-engaged nasty piece of work. And this opinion is based on personal interaction that dates back to the egg salad challenge, which was August of 2007.
I've watched this EBL dust-up and have concluded that the best way for me to proceed, both spiritually and emotionally, is to treat her and her current spouse as objects of pity. They are manipulators and deceptive and unable to acknowledge error or apologize. Isn't that pitiable? I think that'll be my default. Besides, I think she likes it when we get all mad. And that's a pity, too.
First, thanks for the back story. I only knew of Mary from Althouse comments and I liked what I saw, as she had a way of getting to Ann and pissing her off. That pleased me. Was she a psychotic bitch from hell? Hey, I'm a dude who married one so clearly my judgment is not too good.
Again, to quote Troopski, what the fuck do I know?
Well, a little bit more now.
Live and learn. See Naples, then die, or something...
OMG, Icepick. I remember that post of yours. It was written in response to probably the most heartfelt, anguished blogpost I ever wrote on blog of mine--about some experiences my son was having in school at the time, right? Which led, eventually (because I can be stubborn in hope, believe it or not), to the decision to homeschool.
Dang. I still tear up when I think of that post and the time and circumstances during which I wrote it.
I've said it before, but I'll say it again: Your support, then, was really a huge blessing, 'Pick (as was Ruth Anne Adams'). I will forever be eternally grateful and always owing in thanks.
[deleted and reposted to add a couple of skipped words, for clarity)
Mary can sound reasonable for a while, but soon devolves into personal sexual insults. I've never engaged with her on the blog except once in the beginning until I figured out what her schtick is. Just like Inga, it is a waste of time to respond to her.
I wasn't aware of any of the previous bad experiences and I guess, threats from Mary. I just figured out that she was an unhinged piece of work.
Take it from someone who can oftentimes himself be quite crazy.
But Mary is crazy in a twisted and slightly evil/deranged way.
I hate thinking manipulatively though, and it's Troop's call what to make of the enema of his enemy. However, I think this kind of speaks to EBL's dimness. How could she have not found a way to have restricted her before, given the longstanding nature of her enmity? (I say "her" enmity because I'm not sure that someone like Mary can differentiate between detesting someone and loving them - or even feeling anything other than detestation, so I'd never speculate on what she feels).
The empty room meme has really taken off, and that's pretty much all that can be sad. It is pitiful, but I suspect even someone as misleadingly in love with herself as Althouse is has something up her sleeve. Either that, or she'll go hippie, renounce blog-fame, and chalk it up to a change in "lifestyle choice"/"life priorities".
But if the portal was really getting to the point of garnering upwards of 6 figures annually it really is hard to imagine that she'd give up gigs that could lead to that quite so easily.
Luckily, my investment in the idea of her integrity was negligible for nearly as long as I can remember. So whatever she does is fine by me. She can talk to an empty room 'til the end of time. Plenty of blogs try to. But then they usually get yanked, or lose op-ed invitations to NYT, or appearances on BoringHeads. Or were never intended to be commercial. But that seems to be outdated.
Her resilience on the academic law circuit (and ego) ensures her indefinite continuance and persistence somewhere in the blogosphere however, I'm sure. That's ultimately what it comes down to.
But I've been wrong before and wouldn't have a problem being wrong on that.
Yeah, Evi has it right. Hilarious that Althouse assumes a lawsuit against a commenter - no matter how abusive - would go anywhere. Witness the yawning chasm between academic legal knowledge and reality - and even legal reality, at that.
They'd probably laugh her out of the courtroom while asking why she never thought up the idea of exploring means to control access to her comments section.
It's stunning, really. You go into publishing or writing, you learn how to market your craft. The same goes with any field. It just goes to show...
Hilarious that Althouse assumes a lawsuit against a commenter - no matter how abusive - would go anywhere. Witness the yawning chasm between academic legal knowledge and reality - and even legal reality, at that.
I don't know, if you can find a spouse and lawn boy via the innertubes, why not a paycheck?
(Seriously, though, there seems to be a major disconnect from how the world functions (e.g. the Reason article displaying a fundamental lack of knowledge of polite, societal protocol.))
Rhythm and Balls said... Chickie - what voice are you using for EBL?
She sounds just as Churchillian and Buckley-esque as the others!
I call it my "pedantic scold voice." It's not supposed to be anybody but her haughtiness. If I could actually do a John Houseman as Professor Kingsfield from "Paper Chase", I would use it.
My Churchill voice is slightly different--I once used it to voice one of your rants here.
I first voiced one of Simon's retorts to ChipS as WFB here but then I decided it fit you more, and I didn't want to pick on Simon (much like I feel bad about voicing edutcher as Mr. Ed).
But now you've gone and morphed into a kinder gentler character so I don't know what to use for you any more. :)
For fans of the great character actor, John Cazale, there is a good 2009, 44 minute documentary on him available on YouTube. It's appropriately titled, "I Knew It Was You."
Icepick said... rcommal, Annie Gotlieb and Ruth Anne Adams are three people about whom I refuse to hear a bad word.
Amen to that.
And I'll add Freeman (Bethany) Hunt to that list. She is, to me, thoroughly admirable in every way. That she seems to have been able to keep a relationship with Althouse is nothing against her.
Hell, I would have liked to have kept up a relationship with Althouse. That has been impossible for a lot of us, because Althouse has a remarkable talent for treating people badly.
Althouse, however, always has been respectful toward Freeman. And, for her part, Freemen consistently posted sober, thoughtful, well-written comments.
Such a happy state of affairs has eluded most of us, which is why complaint about Althouse makes for such a rich and popular topic.
I can be real bitch, though, and everyone has seen examples of that.

Given her dominance of the poll dance comment thread, Inga must be the AA-approved voice of the opposition. It's hard to see it otherwise.

Yeah, I'm a bad boy...

Maybe that was Titus. I can't tell those two apart.

I can't see Chip Ahoy doing gifs for an audience about the size of a large children's party.
Right now, she is not the place for that.
Also I would like to drop the subject of Freeman Hunt as it is not fair to talk about her when she can not answer back.
So if we can table that subject that would be cool.
Troop said: I always found Freeman Hunt to be very sanctimonious.
I have nothing against Freeman Hunt, but she is definitely no Darce, DBQ or MamaM and Freeman's comments pale in comparison!
Thanks, Troop. In truth, her non-presence was precisely the "deem fit" for my comments this afternoon referencing her.
I agree tabling the topic, I just wanted to throw in that comment about Darce, DBQ and MamaM!
Didn't see your 2:33 comment until after I posted my 2:34. Sorry!
This remains a self inflicted wound.
I went over there just now and I feel sad. It's like she's talking to an empty room.
I was thinking a big, old house, with high ceilings and no closets. The kind of house that had armoires in it.
And now there's just one surviving family member left, kicking around, speaking to the ghosts that only she can hear.
I did do a chirbit directed at Freeman though.
And if it was not clear what I was saying it is Darce, DBQ and MamaM comments rock!
So do the rest of you fellows, but I wanted to praise the ladies.
I know.
That's why I am going to start a new series with Meade as Eric Von Sroheim.
Chick, I agree it is a personal loyalty thing. And that is fine. I am loyal to my friends too.
Remember when I said there are some triangles with more than 180° in them, and he told me I should think about it some more?
Um, such things do exist. You just have to choose your geometry correctly.
Ann has a lawsuit? Good luck with that (NOT!).
I didn't say that--merely suggested it based on existing facts.
You just have to choose your geometry correctly.
You went to a really good HS.
Well the evil blogger lady loved to pick on fat people because she thought that got my goat. So witness all the anti-fat posts.
Little does she know.
Fat people are jolly.
Just not gay.
Well except for Palladian.
I will, however, defend Freeman, as I have other online friends--or even NOT friends, more rarely, it's true--from time to time, mildly anyway, if I see fit, for whatever reason. I respect that others do the same, even if we disagree about the defendee in the other direction (with, as repeated ad nauseum, now, occasional exceptions).
rcommaI talks JUST LIKE THAT in real life, too!
Freeman's okay, but she's no Ruth Anne Adams. Ruth Anne is just like Paul Anka, and slices like a fucking HAMMER. I admire that in a person!
Zzzzing! LOL, 'Pick.
You went to a really good HS.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
OTOH, my geometry teacher was very cute, even if very pregnant later in the school year. And my 11th grade chemistry teacher was hot enough to be in a Van Halen video, though unfortunately she was not.
Zzzzing! LOL, 'Pick.
It's funny 'cause it's true! She also speaks very quickly, so you've gotta listen fast or get left completely in the dust. That's challenging for slow Southern ears.
"rcommaI talks JUST LIKE THAT in real life, too!"
But how does she delete when she is talking to you. Does she say it backwards really fast?
That is a very charitable and Christian way to feel RAA and I would expect nothing less of you.
Of course juvenile delinquents like the rest of us might act a little different. But that is just because we are knuckleheads.
Gosh, Troop, I've always thought the juvenile part was the appeal of this blog!
I'm just trying to guard my soul. I might run into her in Purgatory and I really really really want to get to Heaven.
Nick Spinelli will be excluded as will Baron Zemo. Vegas has the odds @ 2-5.
I don't think she likes me very much either since I have called her on her hypocrisy several times and quite often disagree with her positions.
/shrug
I went over there just now and I feel sad. It's like she's talking to an empty room.
Yes, Mary is crazy.
I think you are absolutely right Ritmo.
Follow the money.
That's what she never understood about this pop stand. I don't care if I have a big circulation and I am not trying to make money off of it.
My select group of knuckleheads are very important to me.
Even you spinelli.
Chickie - what voice are you using for EBL?
She sounds just as Churchillian and Buckley-esque as the others!
Oh, now I understand where Chickie was going with the Chirbit... The old Smith Barney commercial she channels at the end!
Lol.

I don't know, if you can find a spouse and lawn boy via the innertubes, why not a paycheck?
(Seriously, though, there seems to be a major disconnect from how the world functions (e.g. the Reason article displaying a fundamental lack of knowledge of polite, societal protocol.))
I may change my name to, Even You Spinelli.

It's appropriately titled, "I Knew It Was You."
rcommal, thank you for the kind words. I remember all of that well, and was happy when you decided to home school.
rcommal, Annie Gotlieb and Ruth Anne Adams are three people about whom I refuse to hear a bad word.
OTOH, Mary and three other people I have dealt with on the internet are people about whom I refuse to hear a good word.
The intertubez are crazy like that.
@R&B: Don't overlook Cedarford speaking about euthanasia like WS Burroughs: link
Althouse lost exclusive chirbit firsts when she ditched comments.
Sads
Not an empty room, a desert!
Where's that sneer of cold command NOW?
I've missed a few things, it seems.
Lawsuit? Where's that posted?
And hiya RuthAnne!
Hiya, Mikey!
Love ya, Iceoick!
It's good to be around nice folks at a pleasant site.
Icepick said...

Good Lord. Well, thank you!
I can be real bitch, though, and everyone has seen examples of that.
"There was a little girl/who had a little curl/right in the middle of her forehead/and when she was good/she was very very good/but when she was bad/she was horrid"
sort of sums it up, and don't I know it.
