Problems of a shopkeeper 2

So look at these cool bags. They are big enough to carry a laptop in and when I put them in the window I usually sell one. They are in the mid range price wise not the most expensive bag we have but far from the cheapest. The only problem is that we have bought eight of them and sold eight of them. That is not the problem of course. The problem is that two of the eight have been returned as broken within a week of purchase as the top came right off, ripped the handle and the metal locking mechanism on top right off the bag. So two out of eight bags are a problem because you hate when a customer get a defective piece. Do I keep ordering from these guys because the stuff sells knowing that it fail and break 25% of the time? Are they shoddy goods or was it just a coincidence that two out of eight were no good? You have to make a decision and you have no idea what is the right thing to do.

Damn I'm a whiner but the physics of that bag just looks bad.

Too much load on too small of a handle-if they do put a lap top in there-I'm thinking it over-stresses it.

I wouldn't re-order.

That's what I think. Especailly since they want it as a laptop bag and then stuff too much papers and stuff into it. If you just put in an apple computer and a few pencils you are good to go. The trick is that the leather quality is really good and the price is reasonable.

Life is tradeoffs. If I get them back in, it will be with full disclosure. Don't stuff you bags or they might burst.

Good advice for life as well.

I does come with a strap by the way so the problems only come when you hold it by the handle.

That's what I look for when we buy bags like this. A heavy strap that will stand up and a comfortable handle that you can hold on the subway when you have to take it off your shoulder. You don't want a sharp handle that will dig into you skin.

Sorry if that's too much information.

I can't tell. If there's reinforcement, or better yet a stiff plastic or metal bar, all along the top then it might work. Distributes the stress of the handles all along the bag top.

On the other hand, if those little tabs that hold the handles on are just stitched through the bag fabric without reinforcement, forget it. In this case you have the entire weight of the bag hanging from the points where the thread goes through, with no reinforcement. You have to look at the bag and see where the stresses will go, say when you pick it up fast or swing it around a little as you walk. If it twists in your hand and it's got ten pounds of laptop plus books plus other stuff, will the torque be too much for it.

Also if it's a big bag - particularly this kind of shape which looks sort of brief-bag-like - you need to assume the worst case, which is that people will stuff it with heavy items. Appearance matters, too. Too many big purses have tiny thin little straps which obviously won't let you put anything in them more substantial than a shawl. But this bag looks sturdy, and the handles are thick, so people will load it up.

I'd call the manufacturer and bitch them up and down. If they say "Yeah, we know about that, we had a design problem but we've fixed it" and they're apologetic, that's one thing. If they say "Well, I do declare, we've never had any complaints! Your customers must be abusing the bag!" then that tells you something else.

The manufacturers are Korean and their response is along the lines of "no likee, no buyee white devil."

It's a small world after all.

It's just that the leather is so bitching good.

I think they make it out of dog or something.

Just kidding, just kidding, put down the torches and the pitchforks please.

I seriously doubt the Koreans make leather out of dog hide. Because when youre eating dog, the skin is the best part. Sort of like fried chicken or crackin from hogs. Seriously, you can take my word for it.

Ooh, that is a tough call. And a problem with dealing with non-English speaking types.

Just so you know my life is not all cake, beer and breasts.

Well it is, but I still have to make a lot of decesions.

As long as you do this, you're fine. IMO.

In a declining economy, women will buy smaller items--a new lipstick, a new purse, a new pair of shoes--rather than a new big ticket item...might wanna stock those accessories and hunker down for the recession.
