Nasty, nasty, nasty.

[Shrek burps in front of Donkey and Fiona]
The Donkey: Shrek!
Shrek: What? It's a compliment. Better out than in, I always say.
The Donkey: But that's no way to behave in front of a princess.
[Fiona burps louder]
Princess Fiona: Thanks.
The Donkey: [to Shrek] She's as nasty as you are.

DBQ was absolutely right in the fact that it was kind of disgusting that Althouse used the words of the "Hail Mary" to attack another commenter. But that is par for the course for her.

She is a very troubled person.

And she hates Catholics and the church.

Shrek is one of my all-time favorite movies. So much packed into it. We first watched it in Ludington, MI, when we were visiting there on a business/vacation trip. (Wife had to meet with the Dept. of Rev. of Mich, so we turned it into a vacation and carved out time for her business stuff.) It was raining, so we took the kids to the theater to kill some time, and Shrek had just hit the theaters. We howled and howled.

Lots of pretentious friends refuse to watch it because it's a cartoon, but that's their loss. Was it an important film? No. It was entertaining, and that's good enough.

And now she's claiming that she and Meade said a Hail Mary this morning, at least that's a topic on her blog. Fat chance.

Ditto the discussion of Grace.

A highly-regarded lawprof now resorts using her blog to respond to conversations on someone else's blog. And then steals topic material.

Imagine how the other lawprof bloggers must be eyeing her blog these days.

They really need to turn off the blog for a few days and take a vacation to get some r and r.

Interesting concept. I have been thinking about taking a road trip.

I think I could do without my computer, assuming I had my phone with me.

But being away from my pets is difficult - if I can get some good, trustworthy help around here, I think I could do it.

Perhaps the best part of this idea is taking the opportunity to shut this thing down, take a road trip and go see people I have known since I was 5.

Life is short. Have been local for a long time, maybe it is time for a ROAD TRIP!!!

Do you think they'll start franchising soon? If they do, the franchisees will have to get a proportional cut of the Amazon portal income.

I wonder how much they want for a franchise? Cash? Percentage of revenue?

Hell, I'd put up with Inga for a few hundred extra dollars a month.

Being on the same blog with Meade would require a minimum $100K/yr., net of taxes.

The Dude said...

LOL!

In cash, up front. Krugerrands preferred.

@Sixty - good idea! I'm looking at the same thing for the last 10 days of this month. Motorcycling to who-knows-where.

The Dude said...

I was telling my one remaining brother that I wanted to get a motorcycle. He liked that idea as he wants to be an only child.

Okay, that is way too morbid. My next oldest brother died 3 years ago. He had come off his motorcycle and while he was not badly injured, when he was x-rayed in the ER they discovered the cancer that later killed him.

Had he been able to be cured, the accident would have been a useful diagnostic tool. As it turned out, it was too little too late.

I love riding, but it would be a cliche for me to get one at my age.

Michael Haz said...

Maybe not. Take a rider safety course, then buy a smallish dirt bike to run the back roads and cowpaths. A lot of fun in that.

The Dude said...

I agree, Mr. Haz - I used to ride a lot more when I lived in Santa Clara valley, but when my sons were born I stopped. That was a great place to ride.

I took up bicycling and rode tens of thousands of miles on and off road, all over the country, but had to give that up a few years back when my neck went bad.

Nothing better than being out in the wind on two wheels.

Ok...I was working on this while the subject moved on to road trips, but it's still fits in with the topic at hand, so here goes:

I see the Althouse Meltdown and Subsequent Lem Meddling as a perverted form of self fulfilling prophesy, a forced ride on the Loser Express, with the two of them manning the throttle and piling on coal for a hotter burning fire.

When Althouse decided to turn off the comments as she did, she created a situation whereby those whom she'd already declared to be "losers" were left to experience the reality of additional loss on several levels. Commenters who'd gathered at "her" blog (some for many years) were abruptly cut off from the means by which they'd previously connected and were left with little to no explanation, recourse or opportunity to process the abrupt change and/or say goodbye to each other. A significant bond was broken; and loss of community, loss of relationship, and loss of trust was experienced, with grief as an end result.

From the wiki: Grief is a multi-faceted response to loss, particularly to the loss of someone or something to which a bond was formed. When Lem opened his blog, he provided a central place for those labeled as "losers" by Althouse to come back together, reconnect, openly consider their response to the Meltdown and express some of the anger, confusion and sorrow, along with the sense of betrayal and pain that is part of grief.

For the pair of them to bring to Lem's blog anything other than clean encouragement and clear support for him and his venture seems to me to be a form of misuse and meddling tantamount to poisoning another's well or sowing another's field with salt. Generosity of spirit is not soley marked with financial donation. By overtly and covertly presenting their own unresolved issues, justifications, and quarrels with others at Lem's, without openly owning their part in the situation that caused his blog to form, or providing a place for a mutual public dialogue on the subject to take place; they foment discord and continue to foster loss among the very people they labeled as "losers".

Whatever's driving their behavior, now would be the perfect time for them to start figuring it out and stop dropping their undigested business in another's pool.

@MamaM: Don't forget that Meade had retreated into being all but invisible as a commenter on TOP for the last year or so, and then mostly as an Amazon spokesperson. Then suddenly, at Lem's, he goes all alpha. There's something fishy about that -- like he's horning on being a foster blog father. Could it just be Lem's dog avatar?

chickelit said...

"horning in on" not "horning on"

That or having free run of the house.

The Dude said...

Hmm - maybe my hearing is worse than I thought (hell, who am I kidding, I am as deaf as a post) - I thought that was FDR.

My bad.

You are right on the money, MamaM - interestingly enough, Meade and Althouse have been getting some push back over at Lem's. And not just my bombastic rants, I mean from thoughtful people. LOL!

Back to your comment, MamaM - you touched on generosity - clearly they are not generous people. Nothing about them says generous. Grasping, needy, covetous, materialistic, yeah, they have those qualities by the bucketful. Generosity, not so much.

Based on what I saw in that vlog, Meade does not have free run of the house - he apparently has to crawl around in some rooms. Oh, the things I could write...

Well I thought that the post where Meade told everyone to give Lem money and maybe he could hand some off to Ron and Palladian.

I mean man that is as low as low can get.

MamaM: I was looking at the vlog the other night with a mix of similar, but not so well-expressed, emotions. I watched it several times, trying to catch something I might have missed in Althouse herself that would explain her behavior lately, if not for the past 9 years.

I found no insights, but instead had my first panic attack in years, awakening later with hear pounding, blood pressure spiking, chest constricting, body cramping. I am an old hand at this (being in the music business, which is only slightly less stressful than playing Russian roulette), so I went into meditative breathing and biofeedback mode, which I learned long before there were kids to keep me distracted. In recent years, I've had no time or energy to waste on my own personal worry. (We're nearly empty-nesters now, so I can start staring at my navel again.)

Anyway, I thought about it, did a little biofeedback, monitoring my heart while reviewing recent stressors, and the cause seemed to be subtle hyperventilation while watching the vlog. Hyperventilation and subsequent alkalosis are extremely common precipitating factors in panic attacks, and, of course, make them easy to resolve if you've got the techniques down. I've had a LOT of practice, not so much since kids, as I say, but like riding a bike, old habits come back when you need them.

I may have been a little over-the-top when I wrote about this here last night (subsequently deleted), but, having the history I've had with the Althouse blog (a regular reader since the 4th month), trying to parse the vlog was a very unsettling experience. I consider myself fairly sophisticated and socially adept, at least IRL. I have an academic background and all sorts of ongoing connections to academia, some through my wife, some of my own. I know a number of tenured academics with time on their hands, so I thought I understood Althouse-like people. But she is sui generis. (That's Latin for "real piece of work.") And, frankly, she flummoxes me. I do not get her.

She wins. I'm a loser. If all these years been preparation just to demonstrate that—and she says she views it as her magnum opus (Latin for "really big bottle of wine")—well, I hope she enjoys the vintage.

The Dude said...

Hang in there TT - that's tough.

As for panic - I don't tend to, but I once played solo piano at a wedding and afterwards I shook for a week - seriously - the stress of playing in public, being the focus of attention can be overwhelming. I am amazed that anyone can do that at all. I am reminded of Glenn Gould saying that concertizing was the last blood sport. He knew.

That was my last solo gig, I did accompany a choir a few more times after that, and being in a group helped minimize the stress, but fortunately my neck went bad and I lost sensation in my hands and I no longer play at all. Blessed relief.

On another, but tangentially related subject, I saw the doc Monday with regards to an eye problem (nothing like yours, Jack Elam, er, Trooper), and got some eye drops, a .3% solution of C18H20FN3O4 Mol Wt 361.37 (that's for E. P.).

While it doesn't show up on the paperwork as a side effect, it has sped up my heart and caused insomnia. Very odd. I'll try to stay on it a few more days, but the doc said it probably wouldn't work and that I would have to see an ophthalmologist anyway, so when the side effects get too annoying I'll stop taking the eye drops. Strong medicine.

I could see my way clear to spelling ophthm blah blah blah, so I must be able to see a little bit.

Sorry you went through that Tim, some things are best avoided, such as magister iuris ebrius in her natural state. Feel free to leave the heavy lifting to Troopski.

Note to anyone who has read this far - the appellation Troopski is in recognition of the presence of Icepick. Perhaps it is just a Mercader projection of mine, but we should consider having the Trooper Meetup IRL in Mexico City.

Ann and Meade are the reason black people stare.

Really, what ARE they doing? They ruthlessly kick us off their blog - only to follow us here? So we have to listen to more (of what they think are) self-justifications when we KNOW they'll lie on us about anything:

OCTOBER 3, 2012 - Ann Althouse describes herself as "ONE OF THE INSTAPUNDIT BLOGGERS AND GUEST-BLOGGERS,..."

July 10, 2013 - Ann Althouse writes the "perception that I'm Glenn's 'usual fellow traveller' is off, but not uncommon. I think this distorted impression has partly come from the comments section,..."

Nobody forced Ann to write that. It's a clear example of how distorted her mind is - and how they think this latest episode is going to go. Fuck them both.

What ARE they doing here?

HOLY MOLEY!!!

I recently proofread a dep about pipes rusting in a brand new building. Turns out the ERW pipes that carry the water to and from the cooling tower were made in Oman and some other 8th world shit hole, and the welds were not good.

Martensite had formed making the seams weak, and in addition, the system had been started up using untreated water.

I knew a little bit about the eutectic phases of steel, having studied that stuff a long time ago, and having worked in foundries, but I was not aware of the use of biocides to prevent rust.

I figured they used biocides to kill the Legionella, I mean, who doesn't, but they also wanted to kill the microbes that allow (cause?) rust to form. What a fascinating concept. Bugs eating steel.

Sounds like something Troop would write about.

@Sixty: Thanks for the info. Pertechnetate ion, TcO4-, is one of the best rust inhibitors out there. The mechanism of action has nothing to do with technetium's radioactivity, rather it's just plain old chemistry. And it's a pity too given that rust is such a corrosive destroyer of wealth. In a world where exposure to beta emissions didn't matter, we'd have an age old problem solved.

Chip S. said...

Exposure to beta emissions is a constant source of complaint among the members of my softball team.

The Dude said...

To avoid beta emissions just close down the comment section.

The dep did not get into the specifics of which biocides were being used, but there was a review process done by the building engineers - that water went through copper and steel pipes, various filters and pumps and there was always the possibility that a pipe could burst and then humans would be exposed to whatever was in the water.

Tough challenge. But it was an interesting transcript to read, I will say that. Much better than the slip and fall deals.

Are they Catholics? If not, then why would you say a Hail Mary? The whole grace thing was out of left field. It was like them saying, that all of us should have or show grace unto them and if we don't then we are people of vice and not virtue. I've never seen a tag team meltdown like this before. I'm not really sure how to react to it or whether I should just observe it like an accident or oncoming train wreck.

In the area I grew up in El Cajon, Ca. there were a lot of places you could go dirt riding and we did that a lot as kids. I used to have a Honda 150. That was a fun bike. Lots of great motocross guys come out of San Diego and especially the east county of San Diego.
