The antibiotics are done!


The antibiotics are done for now and your friend Trooper York will be celebrating with a few cocktails tonight. Merry Christmas!

I have never really agreed which the advice to not drink while taking antibiotics--unless the combo gives you nausea of course.

The argument is that alcohol metabolizing enzymes can either break-down the drugs, or make them last longer--either of which could be bad. But here is the thing: If you are a regular drinker (and I will make a wild guess that you are) then those enzyme levels are always high and don't depend much on continuing to imbibe.

Now if you were a tea totaler, then it is probably not a good idea to take up drinking while on antibiotics.

My impression of doctors is that they don't usually have a good grasp of biochemistry. I don't hold it against them; they have tons of other stuff to be up on too.
