Yelp has recently posted two very negative reviews of our store. They are definately
made by a sock puppet of one of our competitors. We threw the competitor out of our store during the last trunk show. She had her minions baltently checking out our clothing in view of copying them. We threw her out of the store.
Yelp had harrassed me for weeks to advertise on thier site with dozens of emails and phone calls. When I finally refused and demanded that they stop, these bad reviews appear and are highlighted. I think that site is a scam and they want protection money.
I think I will have to do something about it.

Yelp advertises on Craig's List all the time, looking for "reviewers" and whatnot. Anyone with an internet connection and a basic grasp of the English language can apply, get hired, and start writing whatever they want regarding any establishement. It's a complete scam and needs to be shut down! Sorry to hear they are effing with you guys.
Yelp doesn't "post" negative reviews, people do. Yelp is very similar to Blogger (which you are using), but instead of writing about anything folks are writing about businesses.
If you feel there are suspicious reviews on your business you can flag them. Or contact us at http://www.yelp.com/feedback and we'll take a look. We do fall on the side of free speech, so if there is nothing suspicious we may have to leave it untouched.
Zachary in the comments mentioned we pay people to review. We do have folks in brand new cities help us get started, but in mature communities we don't have paid "reviewers".
We don't highlight bad reviews, there is no such feature. Order is determined by votes and date. Apologies about the calls, if you say "do not call" your rep should absolutely respect that. I apologize if that hasn't happened please send me a note through http://www.yelp.com/feedback with your business name and we will make sure that is properly handled.
Thanks for listening,
Jeremy (Yelp)
Yelp has no long-term value unless its reviews are fair and verifiable. It has a vested interest in a lot of reviews. Even then, well, Amazon has problems with review bias.
But it's not just them; I read negative reviews of great local joints all the time on the 'net. Do you think that inclines me trust anything I read?
The problem was that the negative reviews were all posted the same day as ten other reviews. One was by Lola and one was by Lala. And she posted a five star review on the store we had the problem with so you know it is crap. Also this person googled every time we were mentioned and put on a post telling people to go to this other shop. It is just low rent and sleazy.
Send Jeremy a ten-pound red snapper wrapped in Plaxico's bloody sweats. That should do it.
Fuck you, Jeremy.
