Wednesday night cocktails!

Wednesday night cocktails at Marco Polo!

We had two days off and I was not into cooking tonight. So we went to Marco Polo to have cocktails. Today with was a Strawberry Gimlet. It was much too sweet so we had to switch to something else after the first one.

The joint was deserted again. I guess Wednesday is not a big day for them. They had a big catering job tonight at the Brooklyn Bar Association so most of the regulars were out of the store. So they didn't lose money wise but it was still very quiet.

Those flavored drinks are almost always too sweet. So what did you switch too?

I tried wild rice in the slow cooker. Damn it did a great job. The rice was completely split open and soft, but with the chicken stock, morels, fennel and sweet onion I threw in the flavor was great. The moisture ratio was great, it was not sticky, just about perfect (I usually like it al dente but it was good like this).

Yes I switched to wine after the first cocktail.

I just wanted to try all of the specialty cocktails on the list.

Do you get a prize if you try them all?

Trooper York said...

Yeah. A hangover.

Evi L. Bloggerlady said...

No kidding. And those sweet drinks are worse for that.

I was hearing of places that if you try all the cocktails, you get some recognition or get to add one to their list.

First prize is a bronze replica of Larry Hagman's liver.

Second prize, a set of steak knives.

Hey Sixty, what the hell do you eat? No fruits, no nuts, no vegetables! no gluten so I guess that leaves out pasta, or as us peasants say, spaghetti, very little rice,
bread barely. So what's left? You eat like an Argentine or Argentinian or gaucho? You one of those five pounds of meat a day guys? Believe me you don't know what it took for me to track down that entry where you listed all the stuff you don't eat but I did because I'm a slow thinker and I had to sleep on it overnight before it hit me that WHAT DOES THIS GUY EAT?!

Makin' me laugh, ricpic - I can eat gluten now - the celiac sprue was a misdiagnosis. I went 15 years without bread, but have been making up for lost time in recent years.

I eat some saltines, plenty of peanut butter (which, of course, is ground legumes), eggs, a piece of bacon, sometimes two, per day, and occasionally a small amount of beef (sorry Evi).

When my brother visits, which is once or twice a year, I will cook a roast of some sort, and for him, some rice. Which of course I have to try, I mean it is a once a year kind of thing, and all.

Tea is my primary source of caffeine, and bein' a creature of habit, I do sometimes indulge in a Coca Cola. It's a family tradition.

It's a simple life, and I am grateful that I can enjoy such a variety of food and never get tired of eating the same thing every day.

I did have 2 tomatoes last year - they were great. Also ate 3 or 4 grapes off a volunteer grape vine I had cultivated over at my old place. That reminds me - I need to start a new vine here - when you only have a couple of grapes per year you really appreciate how good they are.

Well, I'm glad you're not starvin'. I thought of cheese after posting, I'll bet he's eating cheese I thought. But it's good you're not - since you didn't mention cheese I assume you're not eating it - because gawd that stuff can knot you up.

How is it when I talk to Sixty I go all southern? Why? Because I'll tell you why...because I'm not an authentic person (ideally pronounced poi-son).

It started out with lactose intolerance, but now I am just generally intolerant.

I stole that gag from a New Yorker cartoon. Nu Yawkah. I am authentically a mid-Atlantic guy who used to live in California fer sher and has roots that go back over three hundred years in my beloved South.

And I eat no cheese. Am not a surrender monkey or blouse wearin' poodle walker. Man, I miss the days when The Simpsons was funny.

Can you eat wild rice Sixty. It is a grass seed, not rice.

If you can do gluten, try faro (although it has less gluten than regular wheat). An old wheat variety that you cook like rice or barley. I love the stuff.

Sixty, Can you eat "liver w/ fava beans and a nice chianti?"

The Dude said...

I can, other than the beans and wine. Plus I don't like liver, but other than that, set 'em up!

Then I can give the Hannibal Lecture. Sure, it's irrelevant, but what are you going to do?
