On the way home form the Hamptons we stopped in Seatuck. We always like to stop by and hit some of our favorite shops and vegetable stands. Seatuck is in Eastport which is part of the Moriches which is the area right before the Hamptons. So you get the same beaches without the snotty fucks with the sweaters draped over their shoulders.
One of our favorites is the antique store "Beyond the Beaten Path" which has a bunch of funky stuff. The shop was closed when we got there but the owner leaves a card in the window with her phone number and you can call her to meet you. It was the day after Labor Day and the summer visitors were gone so it was understandable that she closed early.
When we called she was happy to come back and open up. We had bought stuff from her before. Plus how much money can she make in a small shop off the beaten path? I think she owns the building so she can afford to stay open. Plus her on-line sales of course. We always talk business when we go shopping since most small businesses are in the same boat. The economy has screwed us. Royally.
She has a bunch of stuff. Most of it wildly overpriced but a few pieces that work for display or in the general vibe of our store. I only wanted on thing that really worked:
Can you see the antique steamer trunk in the back with all the stickers for Paris and Europe. It is an antique Valise and would be great as a decoration for either store. Of course she gave me a song and dance about how it was her favorite piece and she didn't want to sell it. Fair enough. I didn't have to buy it. If she gave it to me at a good price I would have done it but I can wait.
We might be coming back later in the fall/winter when it is really dead. Then she might have it priced to sell.

So does the owner, buy all this stuff up front and then mark it up? Or it on a sorta consignment basis?
Timing is everything.
