Our pole is progressing nicely and my favorite Newcastle is in the lead. There is surprising support for Samuel Smiths Brown Ale which is a favorite in the Northeast.
Bass Ale was the beer I drank through out the eighties as it was omnipresent in all the Irish Saloons of New York. It was handled by the Guinness distributor so if you had one you had to take the other.
John Courage is a more obscure brand that you could still find in a few British pubs in the city including Manchester on Second Avenue and one of my buddies old locals the British Open which was an English golf pub devoted to golfing and beer. John Courage was very smooth off the tap and pretty good in a can. You should give it a try.

Bass is English, not Irish.
