Don't look now!

"Hey I am real busy doing taxes. So I don't have time to talk to you right now. So sit down over there and cross your legs. That's what you do when you wear a miniskirt. I will be with you in a minute."

Troop, if you file in the runnup to the 15th are they less likely to catch an, er...error, due to being swamped, than if you file in say mid-February or mid-March? A friend of mine wants to know, heh heh.

Seriously, if it is not a item generated by a source document such as a W-2 or a 1099, then yes your chances are better now. But if it is something that they can verify independantly then whenever you do it they will see it. Also if it is on it's face crazy, it doesn't matter when you send it in. Such as a charitable deduction that is out of whack with your income. Sometimes it's very true, like when you donate a lot of stuff because of a death in the family. I once has a guy donate a boat worth $50,000. But I had the proper documentation. That's the key. Documentation.

Tell your "friend" to be careful what he does. The IRS has gotten a lot tougher the last few years. That's why I am getting out of the accounting game. I don't want to deal with it anymore.

We're beginning to see a little daylight over at our shop, Troop. But still a long way to go. Good luck with your final run to the 15th.

Thanks Pete. It was really, really rough this year. Man next year is gonna be a disaster.

My CPA claims there is a school of thought that believes when you file on the last day of the extension [Oct 15th], your chance of an audit is much muck lower. But I never fudge my taxes because I want to be able to sleep at night [heh I think the IRS reads this blog].

Looking forward to some sort of palliative cleanser later on.
