Dude that is the worst thing you can do. I know about this.
They work but you are on the ships antenna or satillite system. So that means you have to pay them about $2.50 a minute that is tacked onto your phone bill. When you get the bill you are going to call to complain and your phone company is gonna say there is nothing they can do that it is the ship that is billing you not the phone company. Call up Sprint or Nextel or Verizion or whatever and find out if you have an overseas plan. If you do, then only call when you are off of the ship. You need what they call international roaming minutes. But if you use the phone while you are on the ship you will get seriously screwed.
I got the roaming plan for about $25 bucks and made all my calls in Canada when we were on land. But I didn't use it on the boat at all. Trust me you don't want to do that.
You must call your plan and figure that out and let everyone else in your party in on it our you will all have ginormous bills when you get home.
I hate Sarah Jessica Parker, Robin Williams, Tim Robbins, Susan Saradon, the BJ Hunnicut guy, brussel sprouts, the Boston Red Sox, commies and well, lawyers.

Do cell phones really not work on board cruise ships?
Going on a Cannibal Cruise on Froday and wondering if I should bring my iPhone.

So odd we are going on diagonally opposed cruises: you went into Canada, we are going into Mexico.
I hope I don't get my head lopped off or lose a kid when we go ashore.
