Phil Robertson is a Good Man but he is on an island now.

I wrote a little about this at Lem's place. I have some experience with how religion is treated by the TV people. They will do everything they can to squash it unless they can laugh at it or ridicule it. That is what they do.

The said part about it is that their fans will be oblivious to it. I bt they don't follow the news and don't think anything of it. So the powers that be at A&E will get away with trying to stifle his free speech rights.

I won't rehash the stuff I went through since you guys all went through it with me. The only thing that I didn't mention is that all of the TV people had one thing in common. The head of TLC, the second command, the field producer, the ass't producer and supervising producer all had one thing in common. I think you know what it is. I can't mention it because of what would happen if I did.

This is the America we live in today.

Really? Because right now the "boycott A&E until they reinstate Phil Roberts" facebook page has over 940 thousand likes. It was started this morning. It had half a million around noon. It's climbed about a hundred thousand in the past hour. It will go over a million by ten PM or so.
That's also several hundred thousand more fans than the actual A&E page has. People are also unliking the A&E Duck Dynasty page and saying why.

Twitter is alive with various I stand with Phil hashtags.

The advertisers are also taking heavy heat--I know personally since I've been in touch with several of them today and they all report feeling a little shell shocked.

The CEO and other board members personal emails were also released today and they've been pummeled heavily. They didn't expect this reaction.

And Glenn Beck has offered to let the Robertsons be on the Blaze TV where they can do whatever they want however they want.

Cody Jarrett said...

950 thousand likes. So they picked up ten thousand likes just while I was writing that post.

And Facebook even suspended the page's Admin this morning because the page was attracting likes too fast. Then they gave up.

Cody Jarrett said...

8:40PM.

That's pretty huge--a million people in less than a day. And climbing still.

Cody Jarrett said...

picked up over 20K more in the past ten minutes.

Duck Dynasty fans are awake and pissed, apparently.

Wait 'til they get liquored up.

Hot air has a link to the National Catholic Registry on "The Show That Got Away From Them"--which could have been written by you Troop.

One thing though, Robertson is not the island--A&E is. Because Robertson can walk. They don't need A&E.

Evi L. Bloggerlady said...

What do they have in common? Hmmm. Does it involve a love of tubular meat products?

Saw my first poster for a medical conference on 'caring for transgenders'.

The left has been enormously successful at upending all norms and progressively demanding we say what they want us to say, out loud, every day.

I have a bad feeling I am going to get myself fired in the coming years.

I feel more and more connections with (practicing) Jews these days, especially their notion of the 'stranger in a strange land.'

I am reminded of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, three young Jews who defied King Nebuchadnezzar by refusing to obey the his decree to bow down to the golden idol, and so were thrown into a fiery furnace.

"O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. ...we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up."

Troop has said before that winter is coming, but I think it is already here.

KCFleming said...

A&E is learning that they cannot serve two masters, their god and mammon.

Which god do they love more, money or leftist cant?

The Dude said...

Yet they were protected by God in that furnace and walked out unscathed.

Ol' Neb went crazier than a law prof on a 3 day bender.

BTW, Daniel was the man - his story has been much redacted, but he spoke truth to power and it's a shame he doesn't get more press. Or something.

The Dude said...

My guess is that A&E hates Christianity more than they love money, so they will part ways with DD.

I could be wrong, but the hate is strong in them.

KCFleming said...

It must really hurt that the show they wanted ("Let's point and laff at the rubes!") went so awry.

God does work in mysterious ways. And I thought only the devil was smart enough to undermine from within.

"The CEO and other board members personal emails were also released today and they've been pummeled heavily. They didn't expect this reaction."

If the suits at A&E didn't expect the heat of the reaction to their provocation they have to be living in a total bubble.

ricpic, All liberals live in an insular world.

ricpic said...

spinelli's talking to me again! I knew I screwed up, but I'm only human, all too human (hiya Nietzsche). Anyway, to perchance screw up again, was Troop hinting that all those film people were Juden, not homo? They may have been and they are 95% libs, so it fits. Heck, if that's what you meant, say it.

Also, Pogo, keep that job. You promised me a broom closet at Mayo and I'm holding you to it!

Trooper York said...

No they were not Jewish.

It was the Orthodox Jews and the Catholics against the fish taco's and the salami fanciers.

It is were my views on these matters took a sea change. In a big way. I saw the future. This latest hubbub is just another manifestation of what is coming.

The Dude said...

Cassandra Trooper - where's your faithful sidekick Crack? He too knows the future.

Trooper York said...

Crack is the future.

A black guy laying around collecting while you pay the bill.

He is a prophet I'm telling ya!

The Dude said...

He's a non-prophet.

Cody Jarrett said...

since you mentioned his name--did you notice the post where he makes fun of someone for playing the victim?

Yes, he went there.

Of course, he's making fun of a guy who's daughter was killed by some psycho sexual thrill killer, but hey...

Trooper York said...

Crack has really deteriorated into madness.

Cody Jarrett said...

BTW, ricpic, I'd point out that liberals live in a bubble.

Plus, historically, Christians and conservatives haven't done anything. An editor at the BBC said a couple of years ago that the reason they did stories attacking Christians and not attacking Muzzies is that Muzzies will plant a bomb in your car or saw off your head. Christians write letters and say "I'm frightfully upset by your recent editorial..."

Now it's at the point where hundreds of thousands of people, including some liberals and some queero sexuals themselves, are attacking A&E.

Cody Jarrett said...

I'm not so sure Crack has. It's just that it's hard to keep up the level of nut he's been on. Everyone's left. Meade doesn't stroke him often, so he went after Annie the other day, two or three time, nothing. PW--Jennifer--left, you left, I left, Thomas left...so he has to keep going bigger.

The Dude said...

Non-profit, too. Poor bastard can't figure out how to monetize his insanity. That's just crazy.

Cody Jarrett said...

Sixty, he's trying to. He's doing a dollar bet, anyone who wants to. SOmething about Glen Reynolds, who I despise btw.

Apparently Crack thinks if he nips at Reynolds enough the "blog father" will pay attention to him.

Have I mentioned I hate Reynolds myself?

The Dude said...

Reynolds is a drunk and a friend of drunken Annie. Something about teaching law drives them to drink.

Problem is they keep coming back.

Punching up has worked for some, but sadly, Crack is too cracked for anything to work.

I almost feel bad about mocking the mentally disabled. But not quite.

Cody Jarrett said...

Punching up is one thing. But what Crack's attempting just proves his moronitude.

Cody Jarrett said...

It's like The Artist Formerly Known As Vanilla Ice(pick) trying to act all tough on the net.

Prescient?

rcocean said...

Interesting that they never attach names to these things. A&E doesn't do anything, some PERSON at A&E decided to Fire him. Why isn't the name being broadcast?

Same with ESP&N kerfuffle. They wouldn't run a commercial that had the words "Jesus Christ" in it. Because it would offend someone... No really that's what they said. They seem to backed off, but again lots of discussion of ESPN doing it, when it was SOME ONE AT ESPN, who should be named.

The left always demands names, we should too.

ricpic said...

Evi - When CBS distanced itself from "country" there were two factors at work. The suits at CBS probably were unhappy with being seen as unhip by their peers, but they were even more worried at CBS being thought of as the old folks' network by the general public and losing out in the competition for the coveted 18 - 49 demographic. Whether they were right or not to drop country, from a business perspective, is another matter entirely. It may have made sense in the booming 80's, in the stagnant economy of the past 20 or 25 years there has been a lot more spending power in the empty nesters than in the younger family formers barely keeping their heads above water.

rcocean said...

Is Crack mad? Or just mad for money?

The old "cry racism bit" wouldn't get any bucks outta me, but then I'm not a boomer.

The Dude said...

Crack is a self-hating baby boomer.

I don't think he's too comfortable in his own skin, either.

Cody Jarrett said...

MamaM: I'm not certain I can articulate it. I've never been overly impressed by his schtick, and I'm less impressed by the people that flock around him and think he's wonderful.

chickelit said...

Does Crack claim to have any living next of kin? Maybe after he finally goes over the edge he can have a sister sort through his scribblings and repackage them in a marketable way...make him some money...enough to foot the sanitarium bill.

The Dude said...

That stuff doesn't sell when it's free.

I make stuff and sell it. I get pretty fast feedback on what people like and don't like about my work. I listen, try to improve what I put out there, and accept criticism as a positive thing.

I honestly don't see or hear anything that he has ever produced that would be worth a freakin' cent. No original ideas, horrible music and graphics that make me thankful I am colorblind.

Maybe there is a market for such stuff, but so far even the author himself is having a hard time finding an audience. You can't insult your customers or potential customers to their face and expect to get money from them.

I did tell one guy from Jersey not to move down here, that we have enough Y*nkees, and what do you know - he didn't buy anything.

Now I keep my opinions about shore trash to myself. Until the check clears.

You know, I like to hang around and exchange comments with you guys. But it doesn't escape my attention that some of you seem to harbor a deep wellspring of disdain and dislike for gay people like me. It's usually couched in "hate the sin" type language, or presented as a joke, but I'm often reminded of the fact that, no matter how kind you are to me, personally, you still view "my sort" as some sort of existential threat, or with disgust.

Just an observation. It often depresses me, though.

Palladian said...

Maybe I'm taking things too seriously. But it's really hard to face the fact that so many people I like think I'm evil in some way.

I guess I should lighten up. I'm just really depressed. Perhaps it's the holiday, which is especially terrible when things are bad.

Palladian said...

I can't convince anyone of anything. I can't even convince myself.

FWIW, I think most attitudes towards homosexuality (whether you're gay or straight) stem from the core issue of nature vs. nurture. Is it genetically coded or a lifestyle choice? Your answer to that largely defines your attitude.

For someone who views it as a choice, then the vibe they send would be akin to the vibe sent to smokers from non-smokers. Smoking is a lifestyle choice. Like any lifestyle choice, there are those who attach moral significance. Some non-smokers judge smokers as evil polluters. They may or may not hate the smoker.

Others may simply view smokers as people who haven't made a very healthy choice. The smoker isn't evil, just misguided...or something.

I think it's the same with gays. Someone who thinks it's a choice may simply view gays as having made a different choice. That may carry moral overtones or not.

Most of my family are fundamentalist right wingers. My mother-in-law worked with a gay guy for decades (he died a couple of years back). We didn't care about his sexuality. Our kids knew him and liked him. I've never heard anyone in the family talk bad about him or his partner. In fact, my in-laws check in on his partner periodically to make sure he's doing okay.

We all pretty much think it's a choice, not one we would make, and don't give a damn about what other people do. And we all miss the guy. He was a truly nice guy. His being gay didn't change who he was or how we felt about him.

Depression and holidays go hand in hand. We probably can all swap stories. I have more than my share. Merry Christmas, Palladian. I hope 2014 is a banner year for you.

chickelit said...

Don't despair, Palladian. Things are bad everywhere. Yesterday I noticed for the first time how fewer people decorate their homes with Christmas lights than when we moved here 13 years ago. The glorious light shows have dimmed.

Many people are hurting. I'm reduced to working part-time in a liquor store. I'm not the oldest guy there, but I'm the only one with PhD. I prefer not to talk about it. I have lots of time to volunteer, though.

Today is the shortest day. Tomorrow they will get longer again. Ouroboros.

Merry Christmas!

Palladian said...

Thanks, guys.

The Dude said...

Hey, Palladian, hang in there dude.

The Duck dude story has been getting way too much attention, and really, who cares, after a while.

Yeah, I look like a duck dude, and I live in the south, but I know lots of gay people and count some of them among my friends.

Yeah, I can be crude and crass at times, but if I have been hurtful to you, I apologize - that was not my intent.

The days will start getting longer, starting tomorrow, and Christmas and New Years will come and go, and next year is a blank slate.

Okay, if I don't stop now I will go off on some sort of new age rant about positive energy and stuff, so I will spare you that.

You do have talent, and given a few good breaks you will do well.

Palladian, I can only speak for myself. I'm a libertarian. I do not care one iota who or what a person wants to fuck. It is irrelevant to me. Speaking for the group, we bust on each other and every demographic. The only group of people that I truly have bigotry toward are French Canadians.

chickelit said...

The best take down of the French I ever saw was by an Italian:

Years ago while living in Switzerland and travelling in France, I was in a tiny delicatessen outside of Versailles. It was lunchtime and very busy. I had taken the time to teach myself enough French to get along, being aware of how English never cuts it with the French. Others in front of me had struggled to order in English, and the woman behind the counter obliged, but with the rolling eyes thing. Right after I had ordered (in French), an older woman began ordering her grocery list in Italian. The younger woman dutifully obliged without expression and spoke not one word in return. Now perhaps the older woman was a local and the younger one knew her; perhaps the younger woman was Italian herself - I never did find that out. What I came away thinking with a smile was that the older woman had just laid some linguistic superiority of her own onto the younger one: "I'm speaking the language closer to the mother tongue so you just hush and take it." That's what I wanted to believe anyways.

We stayed in St. John, NB years ago, and while we were there toured a Loyalist home. We were the only ones at the moment, and about halfway through our tour someone knocked at the door. The tour guide opened it and a couple from Quebec began inquiring, in French (well...the Canadian (per)version of French) about doing the tour.

The tour guide, a university student, did what everyone does when confronted with people who don't speak your language. Very slowly and loudly he shouted, "Come back tomorrow; the French tour guide will be here. Tomorrow...tomorrow...come back tomorrow." They seemed to get his drift and left.

After he shut the door, he said to us, "I speak French, but I refuse to do so in my home province." I tipped him extra after we completed the tour.

As an outside observer, I see two points of contention:

1) There are Christians are hating the sinner, not just the sin.

2) There are GLBTers who can't stand the idea that anyone considers what they do a sin. That's "hate".

These are flaws that are inherent in human nature. I don't expect this problem to go away.
