Custer in Chains!

One of my favorite authors of alternative history Robert Conroy has come out with a great new page turner called "1882 Custer in Chains."

It seems that Custer brought along a couple of Gatling guns and survives the fight at Little Big Horn. He became a national hero and was elected President. In reality there was a little boomlet for him to do just that in real life and if he had triumphed at Little Big Horn this would have been a real possibility. In any event this lead to Custer leading us into a war with Spain much earlier than happened in our history with disastrous results.

I just started reading it and it has the usual excellent mix of historical personages and fictional characters that highlight all of Conroy's work.

If you want to sample Conroy's work I would also recommend what I think is his best book: "1901"

This is a great little story where Imperial Germany under the Kaiser decides to flex it's muscle by invading the United States to take away the colonies we had just taken from Spain. With very interesting appearances by Teddy Roosevelt, James Longstreet, Kaiser Wilhelm and a host of other historical personages you can see from a totally different perspective.

Alternative history is one of my favorite genres and I delight to see one of my favorites issue another book. With new missives from SM Stirling, Harry Turtledove and Eric Flint it is going to be a busy summer.

Highly recommended.

Sounds interesting. Given how small the US Army was in 1900, the Germans could have taken over the east coast with 100,000 men.

At the time, the Brits could have thwarted the Germans getting here with their Navy. Ten years later, the Huns could have stopped the Brits with their U-Boats.

I think both of you would enjoy it. It is a quick read.

And chickie you might indulge your interest in WW1 because many of the principals in that conflict are characters in this book including Hindenburg, Von Moltke, the Kaiser, Jack Pershing, Arthur MacArthur and many others.

I would love to read about the Kaiser and TR in hand-to-hand combat.

And Arthur MacArthur too. Sounds like the author really knows his history!

Ha!

It is not that crazy. No dinosaurs.

But McKinley makes an appearance and dies of a heart attack and a shaky TR takes over.

It is an interesting time frame where you don't see many novels based especially in science fiction.

If ever a word was coined for a single man it was vainglory for Custer.

One of my great great grandmothers was born a Custer and was a 2nd cousin of George. Fortunately, she didn't carry George's Y chromosome.
