Rememberance of things Pabst

It's kind of sad when you get old and you only tell stories about hanging out and drinking. I mean I can still do it but I don't get an opportunity to do it. We went for dinner with a vendor at a Brazilian restaurant a few weeks ago and she was shocked that I put away a bunch of capirianas and shots and beers and was as straight as a string.

I told her it was the same way you get to Carnegie Hall. Practice, practice, practice.

Tonight my mom made me a big pot of corn beef and cabbage and the wife and I are going to relax and watch American Idol.

I am an old bastard.

No problem you are an "old bastard". But an old bastard with a tin ear watching American Idol?

I have my limits. EVEN on St.Patrick's day.

For a second there I thought you were going to reminisce about the time Pabst won the blue ribbon and your visit to the Columbian Exposition.

I LOVE Columbian coffee...and back in the day...the "fine Columbian" that Steely Dan brought to town.

Tell us about this exposition, Troop?

You're an 'effing role model to America, Trooper!

And Troop's America prefers cinnamon rolls to go with that fine Columbian coffee.

Trooper, you are not a bastard.

I had corned beef and cabbage too! I could have eaten the entire humongous portion my wife gave me, but I showed discretion.

God bless the Irish.

Oh, and Pabst gave me the shlitz.

Trey - who almost feels bad about posting that. Almost.

Pabst gave you either the runs or a headache. But the price was right!

God bless your mother Trooper!

In other words you got lucky Trey. That's completely normal too. Most of us guys can't help but think about Schlitz with beer googles on. But not tonight for me, alas :(

Amen, Penny.

Hey, "old" beats the alternative.

Pabst was my beer of choice (read:cheapest beer in town) while in college. Schlitz was second. Then Hamms and Old Style and last, Blatz.

For the fun of it, I bought a six pack of each for a family birthday party in January. Much laughter and derision, then an emerging consensus: Hey, this Schlitz is pretty darn good! And the Pabst, not bad either.

Schlitz has become my daily beer. But only in bottles; the Schlitz in cans tastes awful.

I save the expensive beer for weekends.

Another surprisingly good cheap beer, by the way, is Budweiser American Ale.

P.B.R. - yes!

Schlitz of course (first cousin to Strohs, those Germans could brew).

Today's college student are drinking Jagger shots and doing sissy crap like beer pong.

Mmmm...corned beef and cabbage! Wish someone had cooked that for me yesterday. I was still too tired from my trip to cook anything.

Ummm...Schlitz, huh? I will take Michael's word for it. :)

I was a fourth generation Weidemann drinker when the brewery shut down a couple of years ago.

TRUE STORY: My wife always told teh brewery would go bankrupt if I quit drinking. In Janauary I semi went on wagon; in March they filed Chapter 11.

Now I drink regular Miller during the week and usually a premium dark on the weekends.

And wait for Iron City Brewing to start brewing Weidemann again.

mmmmmmm beer.

I remember a about 15 years ago we had friends from Ohio who were coming to visit. Our request....bring some cases of Strohs. You couldn't buy it in California at the time.

If you like beer and lots of different kinds the west coast is a mecca for artisan brews. Sierra Nevada in Chico is a great place. You can get a beer sampler, which is a tray with a small glass of every kind of brew they make from their signature pale ale, to golden wheat, to a dark dark almost Guinness type of beer. If you are ever in the area, don't miss it. Great food....great beer.

Beer blog for you aficionados.

I love the labels on all of these beers. So artsy.

Being a scotch drinker myself, after sampling many other types of cocktails in my life, I do like a beer now and again. Miller Genuine Draft in a bottle.

Trust me. I'm an actual adult. Most of the time...

The midwest is full of micro breweries and boutique beers, those Germans can still brew beer, very good beer.

Good to hear. Small business, and worthy ones like brewerys, are alive and well nationwide.

How could that not be true given the manufacture of America's favorite alcohol drink has what?...Three ingredients?

Combine that with a vat, an artistic, eye-catching bottle and a few local fans, you have the beginnings of a nice little business there.
