Today's gratuitous bath tub scene asks why can't we just get our hero's out of a can? Especailly in baseball. Why do they have to have so many problems? Steriods. Drugs. Drunk Driving. Spousal abuse. Why can't they just cover everything up like the used to do in the 1950's?

In the 1950's and 1960's, the reporters and players grew up in the same neighborhoods. If a player got drunk in a bar, a reporter was probably drunk next to him.
Watergate ruined that. It led to all these Ivy League pussies going into journalism. They envied the rich players and the players hated their snotty Ivy League pretensions.
So no more getting drunk together and banging the same bimbos. It became all about "gotcha" sports coverage. IMHO.
