Happy Valentines Day!

My honey and I rested all day. It is the only day off we get this week. We have finished three episodes and are on to the fourth. We had a friend come over for lunch and we enjoyed a day relaxing at home.

We spend so many days out that our joy is to stay home and relax. I cooked a nice little meal and we caught up on a few shows. The wife got together with two of her close friends and they are going to see another of our friends sing at the Met.

And the best part of girls nights ou?

I get to stay home!

Priceless.

 Happy Valentines Day!

Aw sweet! What good stuff did you cook?

Just comfort food. Meatballs and fried cauliflower.

Good stuff.

Same thing here, mostly, except we both stayed home.

Whenever we grill t-bone steaks, I save the bones in a plastic bag in the freezer. I took a summer's worth of bones our of the freezer last night and used them to make stock for beef soup.

The stock turned out rich and dark brown, and I added a bit of red wine, ginger root, onion, peppers and lemon grass to improve the flavor even more.

The soup was wonderful! A big, hot bowl of t-bone steak flavored soup, some crusty french bread and watching the Westminster Kennel Club dog show on television made for a nice evening,

We stayed home for Valentines day too.

Citrus grilled chicken breasts, creamed broccoli, romaine salad with blood oranges and toasted pine nuts in a balsamic vinaigrette. AND I made a single layer fudgy chocolate cake with a chocolate ganache with kirsch raspberry sauce.

I also tried my hand at making New York style bagels the day before, but they weren't quite chewy enough. Back to the drawing board on that one.

Michael's idea for the bones and the soup sounds wonderful.

That's an eclectic meal sir.

One of the best ways get an easily absorbed source of calcium is a bone broth, it's suggested to add a quarter cup white vinegar to the bones and cold water, then let sit for an hour, before proceeding to cook the soup. It does make terrific stock and soups. You know you've gotten the goods out of the bones when your stock is gelatinous after refrigerating.

For any of us post menopausal women here, rethink taking a calcium supplement, studies show that this source of calcium has a tendency to collect in blood vessels, contributing toward atherosclerosis.

My son took his visiting girlfriend to a nice meal. Neither my bride or myself have succumbed to this Valentine's Day craziness that hit a couple decades ago. It seems the only Holiday that has remained normal is Thanksgiving. We went out for pizza and beer/wine, nice and quiet!

Michael Haz..good stock is one of the keys to life! You understand that.

After making dozens of Valentine cakes for customers, I was Valentined-out. No card. No candy. No dinner out. That's been our habit for 32 years. Since we were penniless teenagers, we've agreed not to get bent out of shape over holidays, anniversaries, and birthdays, when we don't get something for each other. We're still that way.

My approach is to treat her like a queen everyday, not just four days a year. (Not that I'm making any judgements or accusations toward those who do go the extra mile. I'm really not.) One of the wonderful things about our marriage is our compatibility on finances. We could dress it up and call ourselves thrifty or pragmatic, but the bottom line is we're cheap.

It's the best fit financially. I've seen plenty of others who are mismatched. One spends and the other pops a vein in the forehead when the bill comes. Or both spend like drunken sailors and have nothing. But, when both are cheap, it's a beautiful thing. It's a Spartan thing, but it's beautiful.

We had baked chicken and cauliflower. Happy Valentine's Day.

@ndspinelli - Right! And good stock is so easy to make, once a person watches a chef do it on television, or any one of several good videos on YouTube.

When I'm in the mood for a longer day of stock-making, or just want to show off a bit, I dig out the Escoffier book and follow his recipe for chicken or beef consumme.

Lovely!

And Michael, what a great idea! I'm going to try to do that as well. I love soup!

Wish I could write this in small print: I came home from the hospital and had a couple of handfuls of peanuts...

I do have a cute story from last night though.

We had an elderly woman to move to a different floor because she didn't need the heart monitor anymore. She complained the whole way. "My friends won't be able to find me!" "You bumped my knee! Ouch." Stuff like that. Well, we finally got her to her room and the aide says "Well, this looks like a nice room!" And it was! It was a private room and much warmer decor than the cardiac unit.

So the old lady says? "I ain't sayin' nothin' more."

I got a kick out of her. :)

Darcy, lol, the old gals are cute, but they can pack a powerful punch. The old gents just want a quick grab , then they're happy. Geriatrics was fun, most times.

Oh, she was so funny. Totally invested in being crotchety! I do have a heart for people like that, for some reason.

The move started with her telling the aide: "I don't want anyone to see my butt."

Er. Umm...pretty sure that feeling was unanimous! ;-)

(You're welcome for that image.)

Ladies......I'm trying to eat lunch!

LOL. Sorry!

Must be the weather cuz Sunday I made beef stock from leftover rib roast and short rib bones from the freezer.

The Spousal Unit is always a bit disturbed when he has to root through bags of bones and chicken carcasses in search of a hidden pint of ice cream.

We had Pho topped with paper thin slices of rib eye for dinner last night. Yum.

I guess your eyebrow is permanently fixed like that.

I should have been more sensitive.

Sorry about that.

Darcy said...

Whose eyebrow?

Troops, not yours. You're perfect.

Happy VD, everyone.

Not gonorrhea, I hope. That's apparently becoming antibiotic proof! eek

@BJM - Pho! Yes! We have pho at least once a week. Sometimes it's home made, other times it's from a Vietnamese restaurant about 30 minutes from home, but well worth the drive.
